Why Can't I Share a Post to My Instagram Story? 4 Reasons and Fixes

You can't share a post to your Instagram story when the owner has turned off story sharing for their posts, when the account is private, when your own sharing setting is off (for your posts), or when the app or post type is the problem. Instagram only offers the Add to story button on posts from public accounts that allow resharing, so a missing button usually means the owner said no, not that your app is broken.

The quickest test: open a post from a big public brand account and tap the paper plane share icon. If Add to story shows up there but not on the post you wanted, the problem sits with that one account's settings. If it's missing everywhere, the problem is on your side, and the fixes further down will usually sort it.

The four reasons, and how to tell which one you've hit

Here's each cause with the sign that gives it away and the fix that works. Read across the row that matches what you're seeing.

App or post typeAdd to story is missing on every post, or only on one kind of contentUpdate the app, log out and back in, clear the cache on Android

The catch most people miss: when the button is missing on someone else's post, there's no setting on your phone that brings it back. The choice belongs to the person who posted it. You can't override it, and you shouldn't try.

Turn story sharing back on for your own posts

If your friends tell you they can't share your posts, check this setting first. It's easy to switch off by accident during a privacy clean-up, and Instagram doesn't remind you it's off.

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
  2. Tap the three lines at the top right to open Settings and activity.
  3. Scroll to the section about how others can interact with you and tap Sharing and reuse.
  4. Find the toggle for sharing posts and reels to stories and switch it on.
  5. Go back out and ask a friend to try sharing one of your posts again.

If a menu name looks different on your phone, tap the search bar at the top of Settings and activity and type "sharing". Instagram moves things around between updates, but the search finds the toggle.

Two other things to check while you're there. If your account is private, nobody can share your posts to their story, whatever the toggle says, because Instagram keeps private posts inside your follower list. And if you're on a teen account, some sharing options are switched off by default for safety, so if a toggle looks greyed out, check with whoever supervises the account.

When the post comes from a private account

This is the one that catches people most often. You follow a friend, you love their post, and the share sheet only shows Send. That's Instagram working as designed: posts from private accounts can't be shared to stories, even by followers. The account owner chose a small audience, and resharing would push their post to people they never approved.

A screenshot isn't the answer here. Posting a screenshot of a private post to your story takes their photo out of the space they picked, and it can feel like a breach of trust even between friends. If you want the post on your story, ask them. Most people are happy to say yes, and some will post it themselves and tag you, which looks better anyway. If you're planning to feature someone, it's worth reading how to tag people in your Instagram posts so they get the credit.

The same rule applies to stories. You can only share someone else's story to your own when their account is public and they allow it, so a missing option on a story usually has the same cause.

Still missing on every post? Quick fixes

If Add to story has gone from every public post, not just one account's, the cause is almost always the app on your phone. Work through these in order and test after each one.

  1. Update Instagram. Open the App Store or Google Play, search for Instagram and install any update. Old versions lose features first.
  2. Restart the app. Close it fully from your recent apps, then open it again.
  3. Log out and back in. Make sure you know your password before you do this.
  4. Clear the cache on Android. Go to your phone's Settings, then Apps, then Instagram, then Storage, and tap Clear cache. Don't tap Clear data unless you're ready to log in again.
  5. Check your connection. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. A weak connection can stop the share sheet loading fully.
  6. Check the post type. The owner's setting covers both posts and reels, so if one reel from an account shares and another doesn't, compare who posted each one before blaming the app.

If the share works but the story then fails to post, that's a different problem. This guide on why an Instagram story won't upload covers stuck uploads, blurry stories and error messages.

Other ways to share a post you like

When story sharing is off, you still have options that respect the owner's choice:

  • Send it in a DM. The paper plane icon lets you send the post to one person or a group chat, as long as they can see the account.
  • Save it. Tap the bookmark icon to keep it in your saved collection.
  • Mention the account. Post your own story and tag their username so people can find their profile.
  • Ask for a collab. If you're a brand or creator working together, a collab post shows on both profiles from the start.

And once your own story is up, you can share your Instagram story to WhatsApp Status if you want it to reach people who aren't on Instagram.

What I'd do

I'd test a big public account first. If the button shows there, the post you wanted is protected by its owner, so I'd send it in a DM or ask them. If it's missing everywhere, I'd update the app and check my own Sharing and reuse toggle before anything else. That covers almost every case I see.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Add to story missing on some posts but not others?

The owner of those posts has either turned off sharing to stories or has a private account. Instagram only shows Add to story on posts from public accounts that allow resharing.

Can I share a post from a private account if I follow them?

No. Posts from private accounts can't be shared to stories, even by approved followers. Ask the owner to post it themselves or to send it to you.

Where do I turn on sharing to story for my own posts?

Go to Settings and activity, then Sharing and reuse, and switch on the toggle for sharing posts and reels to stories. If the name looks different, search Settings for the word sharing.

Does the owner get told when I share their post to my story?

Your story shows the original account's name and lets viewers tap through to it, so the post is credited.
