The short version: Canva, CapCut, Google Ads Asset Studio, Meta Advantage+ Creative and HeyGen all let you build AI video ads for free right now, but every one of them caps you with watermarks, low resolution, tiny clip counts or a "free trial" that quietly becomes a subscription. Free is real, but it is a sample, not a strategy, and I would rather you spend twenty minutes learning that upfront than lose a weekend to it.

Why "free" needs a definition before you start

Every tool on this list uses the word free differently. Some mean free forever with limits (Canva's basic plan). Some mean free for seven days then £20 a month (most of the InVideo AI style tools). Some mean free because the platform makes its money elsewhere, like Meta and Google, who will happily generate a video ad for you because they want you to spend money running it.

So the first decision isn't which tool. It's which kind of free you want. If you're testing whether AI video ads work for your business at all, go for free with limits. If you're prepping one good ad for a launch, a seven-day trial is fine, just cancel before it bills you.

The free tools that are worth your time

Canva's Magic Design for Video

Canva's free plan gives you AI-assisted video ad templates, text-to-video generation from a script, and stock footage you can mix with your own product shots. There's a watermark-free export on the free tier, which is rare. The catch: the AI voice options and some premium templates sit behind Canva Pro, which runs around £10.99 a month if you decide you like it.

CapCut

CapCut's desktop and app versions are free with useful AI features: auto-captions, background removal, and a text-to-video tool that turns a product description into a rough cut. No watermark on the free plan. The trade-off is that the AI clips it generates look generic unless you feed it your own footage and just use the AI for editing, captioning and pacing rather than generating the whole ad from scratch.

Google Ads Asset Studio

If you already run Google Ads, Asset Studio is free inside your account and will generate short video ads from your existing product images and text. It's built specifically for Performance Max campaigns, so the output is designed to convert, not to look artistic. Worth using even if you only run a small monthly budget.

Meta Advantage+ Creative

Inside Meta Business Suite, Advantage+ Creative will animate static images into short video ads, add text overlays, and test variations automatically, all free within your existing ad spend. You don't pay extra for the AI, you pay for the ad delivery you were going to pay for anyway.

HeyGen

HeyGen's free plan gives you three AI avatar videos a month, each capped at one minute, with a watermark. It's the best free option if you want a talking-head style ad without filming yourself, but three a month is limiting if you're testing multiple hooks.

Runway

Runway's free tier gives you a small block of credits (roughly 125) which is enough for a handful of short AI-generated clips. Good for B-roll and abstract backgrounds, less good for anything that needs to look exactly like your product.

A worked example: the bakery test

Say you run a small local bakery and want a 15-second video ad for a new sourdough range. Here's how the free route plays out, step by step:

  • Step 1: Take five to eight photos of the bread on your phone, good light, no filter needed.
  • Step 2: Open Canva's free plan, choose a video ad template sized for Instagram Reels (1080x1920), and drop your photos in.
  • Step 3: Use the AI text-to-speech voiceover feature to read a 15-word script: "Fresh sourdough, baked this morning, no additives, order by 2pm for same-day collection."
  • Step 4: Add auto-captions (Canva and CapCut both do this free) because most people watch with sound off.
  • Step 5: Export at full resolution, no watermark, total time spent: about 25 minutes.
  • Step 6: Run it as a £5 to £10 a day Meta ad for three days before deciding whether to keep it.

That is a free, usable ad. It won't win an award. It will get you data on whether video ads work for a bakery, which is the actual point.

The uncomfortable bit nobody selling these tools tells you

Most free AI video ad tools are built to make the tool company money, not to make your ad convert. Their whole business model is showing you a slick demo, letting you make one free video, and then charging you the moment you want a second one, a longer clip, or no watermark. That's not a criticism, it's just how the economics work. But it means the "free" version is often designed to feel slightly limited on purpose, so you upgrade.

The other thing worth saying plainly: an AI-generated avatar reading a script rarely outperforms real footage of you or your product, even badly shot on a phone. I've watched small businesses spend hours perfecting an AI avatar ad that gets less engagement than a wonky 20-second clip of the owner talking straight into the camera. Polish isn't the thing that sells. Trust is. If you're choosing between spending an hour making a flawless AI clip or five minutes filming yourself talking about your product, film yourself.

Where free AI video ads fall down

Free plans almost always limit you on the things that matter for ads specifically: resolution, length, number of exports per month, and removing watermarks. A watermarked ad looks unfinished and can actively hurt your credibility with cold audiences who don't know your brand yet. If you're testing, watermarks are fine. If you're running actual paid traffic to it, pay the small monthly fee for one month, get your clean assets, then cancel if you don't need it again.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

There's also a quality ceiling. AI-generated product shots and avatar voices have got much better through 2026, but they still struggle with hands, text on packaging, and anything that needs to look exactly like your real product. For food, clothing, and physical retail, real footage edited with AI tools (captions, pacing, transitions) beats fully AI-generated footage almost every time. For services, courses, and software, AI avatars and generated visuals work far better because there's nothing physical that needs to look "real."

Turning one free video into five

Once you've got a working ad, don't stop at one version. Cut the same footage into three lengths (6 seconds, 15 seconds, 30 seconds) using CapCut's free trim tools, and write three different opening lines to test as hooks. If you want a starting point for hooks and scripts, our AI video prompts guide has 50 copy-paste clips built for exactly this kind of testing. Pair the video with a caption written rather than an afterthought; our guide on writing Instagram captions with AI for free covers tools that do this in seconds.

If you want a deeper toolkit beyond the ones listed here, including editors better suited to longer-form content and more advanced AI effects, I've put together a full breakdown of free AI video editor tools for small businesses that's worth bookmarking alongside this one.

What decides whether the free route is worth it

Ask yourself three questions before you sink an evening into this. First, do you have at least basic product photos or footage already, because generating an ad from nothing takes far longer than editing something you've already shot. Second, are you testing an idea or launching a real campaign, because that decides which "free" tier suits you. Third, is your audience one where a slightly rough, human video will land better than a polished AI one, because for most small local businesses, it will.

If you're building an audience alongside your ads, growth still matters, and it's worth knowing which shortcuts are safe. Our piece on getting free Instagram followers safely and the companion breakdown on which follower apps you can trust are both useful reading before you put ad spend behind any video, free or not.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best free tool to make an AI video ad?

For most small businesses, Canva's free plan is the best starting point because it exports without a watermark, includes AI voiceover, and has templates built specifically for ad dimensions on Meta and Instagram.

Can I make AI video ads for free without a watermark?

Yes, Canva's free plan and CapCut both export watermark-free. HeyGen, Runway and most avatar or text-to-video generators keep a watermark on their free tier and remove it only on paid plans.

Do free AI video ads convert as well as paid ones?

Quality of the idea and the offer matters far more than which tool made the video. A rough phone-shot clip of a real product with a clear offer will often outperform a polished AI-generated ad with no clear reason to buy.

How long does it realistically take to make one AI video ad for free?

Once you have basic photos or footage, expect 20 to 40 minutes to script, generate, caption and export one short ad in a free tool like Canva or CapCut, longer the first time while you learn the interface.
