Where to Get Free Thanksgiving Clipart and Backgrounds (2026): Vintage Prints and Photos

The best free Thanksgiving clipart and backgrounds you can reuse come from the Library of Congress, whose Thanksgiving in History set spans the 1860s to the 2010s, and Wikimedia Commons, which held 229 files in its Thanksgiving category and 203 in Turkeys when I checked. The Cleveland Museum of Art adds 174 CC0 results for turkey and 14 for thanksgiving, and Openclipart covers public domain vector clipart you can use commercially.

Be clear about what you're getting. These are archives and museums, so you'll find vintage magazine covers, prints, paintings and old photographs, not cartoon turkeys in a modern flat style. That's a strength if you want a post or a card that looks different from everyone else's, and a limit if you need a cute sticker pack.

Library of Congress: Thanksgiving in History

The Library of Congress Free to Use and Reuse sets are rights-free images it invites you to add to your own projects. Its Thanksgiving in History set covers holiday celebration images from the 1860s to the 2010s. These are the pieces I'd look at first:

  • Harper's Bazaar, Thanksgiving 1894, by Louis J. Rhead
  • Puck Thanksgiving 1904, by L.M. Glackens
  • The Chap Book Thanksgiving number, by Will H Bradley
  • The first Thanksgiving 1621, by J.L.G. Ferris
  • Thanksgiving day, 1884, Let us be thankful, by Gillam
  • A pumpkin stand in Southington, Connecticut, and a butcher shop window at Thanksgiving time in Norwich, Connecticut
  • President Roosevelt signing his 1902 Thanksgiving Proclamation

The magazine covers are the gold here. Bold colour, big lettering, plenty of space around the main image. Crop the artwork and it works as a background for a menu, an email header or a sign for the shop window.

The Autumn and Halloween set for fall backgrounds

If you want harvest colours without a turkey in shot, the Library's Autumn and Halloween set covers late September to early November: harvests, leaves changing colour across the United States, Halloween and Dia de Muertos. Good Thanksgiving-season picks include American autumn fruits, a Currier & Ives lithograph from 1875, pumpkins at Kelp's Pumpkin Patch stand in Brown County, Indiana, photographed by Carol M. Highsmith in 2016, and Edward Penfield's 1894 magazine poster Harper's for October.

Wikimedia Commons: skip to the subcategories

When I checked, Commons had 229 files and 12 subcategories in Thanksgiving, 203 files in Turkeys, and 50 in Turkeys in art. Here's the thing nobody tells you: the first page of the main Thanksgiving category is packed with military photos of units serving Thanksgiving meals and playing Turkey Bowl football. Useful if that's your story, not much use for a background.

Go straight to the subcategories instead. Thanksgiving in art held 107 files, Thanksgiving food 92 and Videos of Thanksgiving 21. One more surprise: the Autumn leaves category was empty, with 0 files, so look for fall colour in the Library of Congress set above.

Every Commons file has its own licence. Some ask you to credit the creator, some ask you to name the licence, and some ask you to share edited versions under the same licence. The Wikimedia Foundation says it gives no warranty on a file's copyright status, so check the file page before you publish.

What the Cleveland Museum of Art numbers mean

The Cleveland Museum of Art's CC0 works need no attribution or citation, and more than half of its collection is open access. When I searched its open access data for works with images, turkey returned 174 results and thanksgiving 14.

Read those numbers with care. The search matches the word, not the holiday, so the turkey results include any artwork whose record contains it, not only a bird on a festive table. Browse before you get excited, and expect a handful of strong pieces rather than 174 ready-made Thanksgiving backgrounds.

Openclipart for vector clipart you can recolour

For clipart in the strict sense, Openclipart is the clean option. It holds more than 180,000 vector graphics, all public domain, all in SVG, and it says you may use every piece even for unlimited commercial use with no need to cite it. SVG files can be scaled, edited or printed without deformation, so you can recolour a design to your brand. Skip anything tagged pd_issue, which flags doubt about where it came from.

Turning a vintage print into a Thanksgiving post

  1. Choose the image on its item page and note the rights line and the title.
  2. Download the largest file you can.
  3. Crop to your format: square for a feed post, tall for a story, wide for an email header.
  4. Add your message in a plain font over a calm area, or on a band of colour taken from the print.
  5. Credit the source in the caption, even when the licence doesn't require it. It shows you did your homework.

My advice for Thanksgiving images

I'd start with the Library of Congress magazine covers if you want a post that stops the scroll, because nobody else's feed will have a 1904 Puck cover in it. I'd use Openclipart if you need a simple turkey or leaf graphic you can recolour. Skip the main Commons Thanksgiving category, and skip the archives entirely if your brand is bright and modern, because that's not what they hold. Plan it now. Thanksgiving creeps up fast, and a picture you've already cleared is one less job that week.
