Where to Get Free HDRIs (2026): 3 Libraries and What Each Licence Allows

The best free HDRIs come from Poly Haven and ambientCG, where every asset is CC0, so you can use it for any purpose, including commercial work, without giving credit. HDRMAPS also has free HDRIs, but its licence stops you redistributing them or bundling them into a 3D scene or model you sell.

An HDRI is a panoramic, high dynamic range image used to light a 3D scene and give it a realistic background and reflections. If you make product renders, mockups or animated social content, a good HDRI does more for realism than almost any other setting. Here's where to get them free.

Three places to get free HDRIs

  • Poly Haven: HDRIs, textures and 3D models made by Poly Haven staff or donated by artists, all licensed CC0.
  • ambientCG: materials, models and other assets under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal licence.
  • HDRMAPS: HDRI maps under its own licence, with use allowed in commercial and non-commercial illustration but strict limits on redistribution.

What CC0 means for your work

Poly Haven quotes the Creative Commons FAQ: once a creator applies CC0, anyone can use the work in any way and for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Poly Haven says plainly that you can use its assets for any purpose, including commercial work, you don't need to give credit, and you can redistribute them, include them when sharing your own work, or even put them in a product you sell. ambientCG says the same: you can copy, modify, distribute and perform the assets, even commercially, without asking permission.

The catch: not every free HDRI is CC0

HDRMAPS is where people trip up. Its terms grant you a licence to use the images for permitted uses, which include commercial and non-commercial illustration. But they forbid you to sub-license, re-sell, repackage, give away or otherwise redistribute the images, and they spell out that this includes bundling an image with a 3D scene, 3D model or map intended for resale. You also can't release them under an open-source licence such as Creative Commons.

So if you sell Blender scenes, product mockup templates or 3D asset packs, check that every HDRI inside is CC0. Using an HDRMAPS image to light a render you deliver to a client is one thing; shipping it inside a template you sell is another.

Poly Haven also warns that some people resell its free work to buyers who don't realise it's available free. If you see a paid HDRI pack that looks familiar, check the source before you buy.

How to use a free HDRI in Blender

  1. Download the HDRI from Poly Haven or ambientCG at the resolution you need. Bigger files give sharper backgrounds but slower renders.
  2. In Blender, go to the World properties. The Blender manual explains that the world defines the environment your scene is in, and its surface shader sets the background and environment lighting.
  3. Set the world's colour input to an environment texture and load your HDRI.
  4. Render a test frame and rotate the HDRI until the light falls where you want it.
  5. Keep a note of where each HDRI came from, in case a client or buyer asks.

For the rest of your scene, I've rounded up free textures and free 3D models with the same licence checks, and if Blender isn't for you, here are some Blender alternatives.

HDRIs for marketing work: product shots and mockups

You don't need to be a 3D artist to get value from free HDRIs. If you use Blender or another 3D tool for product mockups, an HDRI gives your product believable reflections and soft, natural light without setting up a single lamp. A bright studio-style HDRI suits clean e-commerce shots, while an outdoor HDRI makes lifestyle mockups feel real.

Because Poly Haven and ambientCG assets are CC0, you can use those renders in ads, on your website and in client work without adding credits. That's a real time saver when you're producing a lot of social content, since you never have to track attributions.

Before you download: a quick licence checklist

  • Check whether the library is CC0 or uses its own licence.
  • If you sell scenes, templates or asset packs, use CC0 HDRIs only.
  • Download from the original library, not a reupload, so the licence is clear.
  • Save the source and licence alongside each HDRI in your project folder.

My advice

Use Poly Haven first and ambientCG second. CC0 means you never have to think about credit or where the work ends up, which is exactly what you want for client renders and anything you might sell. Treat HDRMAPS and any non-CC0 library as fine for your own renders only, and never bundle those files into a product.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use HDRMAPS HDRIs commercially?

HDRMAPS allows use in commercial and non-commercial illustration, but its terms forbid redistributing the images or releasing them under an open-source licence.

Are ambientCG assets free for commercial use?

Yes. ambientCG uses the CC0 1.0 Universal licence, so you can copy, modify and distribute its assets, even commercially, without asking permission.

Where can I download free HDRIs?

Poly Haven and ambientCG both offer free HDRIs and other 3D assets under the CC0 licence. HDRMAPS has free HDRIs under its own, stricter licence.

Can I use Poly Haven HDRIs commercially?

Yes. Poly Haven says its assets are CC0, so you can use them for any purpose, including commercial work, without giving credit.

Do I need to credit Poly Haven or ambientCG?

No. Both say credit isn't required, though they appreciate it.

Can I include free HDRIs in a 3D asset pack I sell?

With CC0 assets from Poly Haven, yes. HDRMAPS forbids bundling its images with a 3D scene, model or map intended for resale.

How do I use an HDRI in Blender?

Add it to the World environment. The Blender manual explains that the world's surface shader sets the background and environment lighting, which can be an HDRI texture.
