What Is Branded Content on Instagram? The Rules, the Label and How to Earn

Branded content on Instagram is any post you make where a business partner has given you something in return, whether that's money, a free product or a free trip. Instagram says all of it needs the Paid Partnership label. Some products can't be promoted this way at all, and some, like alcohol, only with restrictions.

Everything below comes from Instagram's own creators site, read as of October 2026: its branded content and Creator Marketplace page, its partnership ads page and its original content guidelines. I've pulled out the parts that trip people up, because most creators get the money side right and the rules side wrong.

The rule that surprises people most: it isn't only cash that counts. Instagram's answer to whether you need the label for free trips or gifted products is a plain yes. Anything you receive from a business partner counts, money or otherwise.

What counts as branded content

SituationIs it branded content?
A brand pays you to post about its productYes, add the Paid Partnership label
A brand sends you a free product and you post about itYes, gifted products count
A brand pays for your trip and you post from itYes, free trips count
You post about something you bought yourself, with nothing from the brandNot under Instagram's definition, because no business partner gave you anything
A brand runs your post as an adYes, that's a partnership ad, built on branded content

If you're not sure where your deal falls, Instagram has a full list of scenarios on its creators site. My rule of thumb is simpler: if you'd feel awkward explaining the deal to your followers, label it. Here's my step by step guide to adding the Paid Partnership label.

What you can't promote, and how you can't format it

Branded content has its own limits on top of the normal Community Guidelines. Instagram splits them into two kinds:

  • Prohibited and restricted categories. Certain products, like drugs and weapons, can't be promoted as branded content at all. Others, like alcohol, can only be promoted with restrictions.
  • Format restrictions. Don't put pre-roll, mid-roll or post-roll ads in your videos or audio, and don't put banner ads in videos or images.

The format rule is the one people break by accident. If a brand sends you a ready-made ad clip to drop into the start of your reel, that's exactly what Instagram says not to do. Make the content yours, with the product inside it.

How to make branded content that works

Instagram's own tips are short and sensible:

  1. Be yourself. Followers can tell when a partnership is out of character. Work with brands you'd talk about anyway, and list your interests in Creator Marketplace so you're matched with relevant projects.
  2. Own the partnership. The brand will expect its product front and centre, and your followers appreciate the honesty.
  3. Shoot for mobile. Always capture video vertically. Content is often watched without sound, so add text on screen or turn on subtitles in advanced settings.
  4. Disclose every time. Use the Paid Partnership label whenever you've received anything from a business partner.

Creator Marketplace: how brands find you

Instagram describes Creator Marketplace as the easiest way for creators to get discovered by brands and earn. Instagram calls it the place where brands and creators can more easily build branded content partnerships, and it says the interests you list there help you get relevant projects.

On the viewing side, ads you didn't ask for on Instagram explains what you're seeing.

How to earn more from a brand deal

Instagram doesn't set the price of branded content. You negotiate the terms of every deal yourself, so each one will be different. Its advice is to arm yourself with data before you name a rate:

  • Your number of followers.
  • Your average likes, views, comments and shares on ordinary posts.
  • How your past branded content performed.

Then ask about partnership ads. Instagram is blunt about this on its creators site: if you're doing brand deals and not asking for them, you're leaving money on the table. With a partnership ad, the brand puts its own ad spend behind your post so it reaches people beyond both your followers and theirs. Because the brand is getting extended usage rights, Instagram says you can argue for higher pay. More detail in my guide to Instagram partnership ads for creators.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Reels, stories, static posts and carousels can all be run as partnership ads.
  • Depending on the brand's setup, your ad may appear on Instagram and Facebook.
  • Meta doesn't limit how many partnership ads you can run at the same time.
  • Posts with licensed music can't be run as partnership ads, so use royalty-free music from the Meta Music Library.
  • If you post first and the brand boosts it, the ad shows on your grid. If you send the content for the brand to upload through Ads Manager, it won't.
  • Brands can't promote your branded content posts until you've given them permission.

Does branded content hurt your reach?

Not because it's branded. Instagram's original content guidelines name content you created with approved partners, including through its branded content and partnership ads tools, as your own work. What hurts reach is the same as for any post: reposting other people's content without material edits, watermarks, clickbait and reels over 3 minutes.

Brand deals sit next to what Instagram itself offers, as the Instagram creator fund explains.

My verdict

Label everything, including the freebies, and never accept a deal without asking about partnership ads. The label protects you, and the ads question is the single easiest way to raise your fee. And if you're a brand reading this and you'd like your product in front of my audience, I do paid partnerships too: here's how to work with me.
