What Is a Ghost Post on Threads? How They Work

A ghost post on Threads is a post that disappears from view after 24 hours, when Threads automatically archives it. Replies go to your messages instead of appearing publicly, and only you can see who liked or replied. You make one by turning on the ghost icon toggle when you write a post.

Ghost posts are Threads' answer to the 'I want to say this, but I don't want it on my profile forever' feeling. Meta introduced them as a way to share unfiltered thoughts without the pressure of permanence or polish. They look a little different in the feed, they behave differently when people reply, and they quietly move into an archive after a day. Here's how they work and when I'd use one.

That 'only you' detail is the interesting one. On a normal post, the replies are part of the show. On a ghost post, the conversation moves into private messages, so people respond to you rather than performing for everyone else.

How to make a ghost post

  1. Open Threads and start a new post.
  2. Write what you want to say.
  3. Turn on the ghost icon toggle before you post.
  4. Post it. Threads archives it automatically after 24 hours.

The official Threads account also shared a shortcut: on your profile, tap the speech bubble icon next to your profile picture to share a ghost post from there. If you can't see the toggle yet, update the app, as new features often roll out gradually.

Replying to someone else's ghost post

If you reply to a ghost post, remember your reply goes to the poster's inbox as a message, not under the post for everyone to read. That changes the tone: it's closer to a direct reply to a friend than a public comment.

What 'archived' means here

Meta's wording is careful: ghost posts are automatically archived after 24 hours, not deleted. They leave public view, but the post still exists in your account's archive. So treat a ghost post as temporary for your audience, not as something that vanishes from the record. Screenshots exist, and anyone can take one in those 24 hours.

When I'd use a ghost post

  • A half-formed idea you want quick reactions to before you write it up in full.
  • A behind-the-scenes moment that's fun today but won't age well.
  • A question to your followers where you'd rather get honest answers by message than a public pile-on.
  • Live reactions to an event, a launch or a match, which nobody needs to read next week.

For business accounts, that third use is the clever one. Asking 'What's the one thing you struggle with in X?' as a ghost post sends answers straight to your inbox, which is a far more useful set of replies than a public thread where people copy each other. It's also a natural way to start conversations you can follow up on.

When not to use one

Don't post anything as a ghost post that you'd be embarrassed to see screenshotted. 'Unfiltered' is Meta's word, not a guarantee of privacy. And don't use ghost posts for anything you'll want people to find later, such as an announcement, a useful tip or a link you want to keep sending people to. Those belong in a normal post, where they keep working for you.

A simple ghost post routine for business accounts

If you run a business account, here's a rhythm that works. Use normal posts for the things you want people to find for months: tips, case studies, announcements. Then use one or two ghost posts a week to ask a question, test an idea or share a small win from your day. Because replies land in your inbox, you'll end up with real conversations with the people most interested in what you do, and that's where enquiries tend to start.

Keep a note of the best answers you get. A ghost post that sparks ten thoughtful replies is often a sign the idea deserves a full, permanent post next week.

Ghost posts and your other Threads tools

Ghost posts are one of several recent additions. Meta mentioned text attachments, which allow up to 10,000 characters for longer thoughts, and the option to hide spoilers in posts. Used together, you can share a long, considered post that stays, and a quick ghost post that doesn't, from the same account.

It's a sharp contrast with X, where replies are public and anyone can browse them, as my guide on seeing someone's replies on X shows. And if privacy is the main worry, how private Instagram stories work covers the sister app's settings.

My verdict

A ghost post is a Threads post with a 24-hour public life, private replies and private likes. Use it for quick, conversational thoughts and audience questions; keep anything useful or lasting in a normal post. And never confuse 'archived after a day' with 'gone for good'.

A post that Threads automatically archives after 24 hours. Replies go to your messages and only you can see who liked or replied.

How do I make a ghost post on Threads?

Turn on the ghost icon toggle when you write a post. Threads also lets you start one from the speech bubble icon next to your profile picture.
