What Happens When You Report Someone on WhatsApp

When you report someone on WhatsApp, WhatsApp receives up to five of the last messages they sent you, basic details of recent calls, their user ID and when and what type the messages were. They aren't notified. Reporting alone doesn't stop their messages, so tick the box to block them too.

Reporting feels like a big step, so people hesitate. Will the other person find out? Will WhatsApp read all my chats? Will they be banned straight away? WhatsApp answers most of this in its help centre, and the reality is calmer than people expect. Whether you're dealing with a scam message, a stranger who won't take the hint or abuse aimed at your business account, here's what reporting does, what WhatsApp receives and what happens after.

What WhatsApp receives when you report a person

According to WhatsApp's help article, when you report someone in an individual chat, WhatsApp receives:

  • Up to five of the last messages that person sent to you.
  • If a call took place, basic info about the last five calls with them, such as who started the call and how long it lasted.
  • The reported user's ID.
  • Information about when the messages were sent and what type they were, such as an image, video or text.

WhatsApp's help pages also say it may receive how the first contact between you and the reported person or group started. That's it. It's a small snapshot of recent activity, not your whole chat history.

Does the reported WhatsApp user find out?

No. WhatsApp says plainly that the user or group won't be notified when you report them. If you also block them, they won't see a block notice either, though they may notice their messages stop delivering.

Reporting a WhatsApp group is a bit different

  • When you report a group, WhatsApp receives up to five of the last messages sent to you in that group.
  • No one in the group is told about the report.
  • Depending on your phone and the option you pick, you'll be removed from the group. On iPhone you can choose Report group or Report and exit.
  • If you want to rejoin later, the group admin will need to invite you again.

There's one quirk worth knowing. If someone shares message history with a new group member and that member reports content from it, WhatsApp says the person who sent the history is the one reported, not the original author.

Does a WhatsApp report get someone banned?

Not automatically. WhatsApp's help centre says it might ban accounts if it believes the activity breaks its Terms of Service, and that it can do so without notice. It also says a report won't necessarily result in a ban or any other action. After you report, WhatsApp says it will acknowledge receipt but won't contact you again, and contacting it outside the app won't speed things up or change the outcome.

If you run a business on WhatsApp, it's worth understanding this from the other side too, because a pattern of reports can land a business account in trouble. I've covered why WhatsApp Business accounts get banned and how to stay on the right side of the rules.

How to report someone on WhatsApp

On Android

  1. Open the chat with the person.
  2. Tap the three dots (More options), then More, then Report.
  3. Tick the box if you also want to block them, then tap Report.

On iPhone

  1. Open the chat and tap the person's name or number to see their contact info.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Report followed by their name or number.
  3. Choose Report and block, or just Report.

On WhatsApp Web and desktop

  1. Open the chat and click the menu at the top right.
  2. Go to Contact info and click Report followed by their name or number.
  3. Tick the block box if you want to block as well, then click Report.

To report a business, open its contact info, scroll down and tap Report business. To report a group on your phone, open the group, tap its name and choose Report group.

Report versus block on WhatsApp: which you need

Reporting on its own doesn't stop the messages. WhatsApp's help centre says that reporting a user without blocking them won't stop you receiving their messages, calls and status updates. So for most unwanted contact, you'll want both. I've written a separate guide on how to block someone on WhatsApp if you'd rather block without reporting.

Staying safe after you report on WhatsApp

The help centre has sensible advice for anyone who feels unsafe:

  • If you or anyone else is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services.
  • If you think a crime has been committed, contact local law enforcement. They can tell you what options you have.
  • Keep a record: take screenshots of the relevant messages, calls or profile details, and back up your chat history so you have it if you're asked.
  • If someone keeps coming back on new numbers, block and report each one.

And if it's all left you shaken, talk to someone you trust. WhatsApp's own help pages suggest reaching out to a friend, a counsellor or a local crisis helpline if you're feeling distressed.

Reporting abuse aimed at your WhatsApp Business account

Small businesses get their share of nasty messages, from fake invoices to people trying to impersonate suppliers. Report them from the chat, keep screenshots and don't engage. If something's gone wrong with your account itself rather than a single sender, my guide on contacting WhatsApp Business support walks through the official routes. For harassment or threats, report it to the platform and, if you're in danger, contact the police.

Frequently asked questions

Will the person know I reported them on WhatsApp?

No. WhatsApp says the user or group won't be notified when you report them.

Can WhatsApp read all my messages when I report someone?

No. WhatsApp says it receives up to five of the last messages that person sent you, plus basic details such as the user ID, timing and message type.

Does reporting someone block them too?

Not on its own. WhatsApp says reporting without blocking won't stop their messages, but you can tick the box to block at the same time.

Will WhatsApp tell me what happened after my report?

WhatsApp says it will acknowledge your report but won't contact you again about the outcome.

Does reporting someone get them banned straight away?

No. WhatsApp says a report won't necessarily result in a ban, though it may ban accounts that break its Terms of Service.
