Yapping means talking a lot, usually fast and about nothing very important. Merriam-Webster defines yap as to talk in a shrill, insistent way, or chatter, and Wiktionary lists yapping as constant talk or chatter. It started as the sound of a small dog barking. Online, 'he's yapping' can be a mild insult or a joke about someone who won't stop talking.
Yapping has had a big comeback in group chats and comment sections, but it isn't new slang. It's been around for more than four centuries, and it's always carried a hint of a small, excitable dog. Here's what it means now, how the tone shifts, and where the word came from.
What yapping means today
Wiktionary gives two meanings for the noun yapping: the continued barking of a small dog, and constant talk or chatter. The second is the one you'll see online. Dictionary.com's slang sense of yap is to talk shrilly, noisily or foolishly. Merriam-Webster puts it as to talk in a shrill, insistent way.
In practice it covers a range. Someone 'yapping' on a podcast is chatting happily. Someone 'yapping' in the comments is saying a lot without saying much. And 'stop yapping' is exactly as rude as it sounds.
| How it's said | Usual meaning | Tone |
|---|---|---|
| I was just yapping | I talked a lot, sorry | Self-aware, friendly |
| We had a good yap | We had a long chat | Warm |
| He's yapping again | He's talking nonsense | Dismissive |
| Stop yapping | Be quiet | Rude |
| Shut your yap | Shut your mouth | Rude, a bit old-fashioned |
From barking dogs to chatty people
Merriam-Webster gives yap's first meaning as to talk in a shrill, insistent way, and its second as to bark snappishly, or yelp. Wiktionary's verb entry puts the dog first: of a small dog, to bark. The human sense borrows the picture of a little dog that won't stop.
That's why 'yapping' has a slightly dismissive edge even when it's said with affection. Nobody calls a deep, thoughtful conversation yapping. It suggests speed, volume and not much substance.
Where yap came from
Merriam-Webster says yap is imitative, meaning it copies the sound it describes, and dates the first known use of the verb to 1596. It dates the noun to 1822. Dictionary.com gives a similar window, 1595 to 1605, and says the sense meaning the mouth arrived around 1900 to 1905.
Wiktionary agrees that it's probably imitative, and adds an alternative: it may come from dialect words yap, yaup or yalp, meaning to yap or yelp. Either way, the word sounds like what it means, which is one reason it's never really gone out of use.
Yap means mouth, and a few other things
The dictionaries record several other senses that explain phrases you might hear:
- The mouth. Dictionary.com gives 'Keep your yap shut' as its example, and Wiktionary gives 'Shut your yap!', labelled slang and derogatory.
- A bumpkin or fool. Merriam-Webster lists an unsophisticated or uncouth person, and Wiktionary marks 'a fool' as dated slang.
- A badly behaved child. Wiktionary records this as a Geordie meaning, from the north-east of England.
- To rob someone. Wiktionary lists this as a transitive slang sense, quoting a 2000 hip hop track.
And the dictionaries mention the place too. Dictionary.com notes that Yap is one of the Caroline Islands in the western Pacific, and Wiktionary says yap is the international code for Yapese, the language spoken there. Same spelling, no connection to chatter.
Having a yap: the podcast and TikTok sense
Merriam-Webster quotes a 10 April 2025 Vox piece describing a style of podcast where two women sit in a studio and, in TikTok terms, have a yap about seemingly small matters. That's the friendly version of the word: a relaxed, rambling chat that people enjoy listening to.
Dictionary.com's recent example sentences show the same thing. One, quoted from the BBC in October 2025, has a woman saying she puts on her bonnet, skips the makeup and just picks up the phone and starts yapping. Another, from The Wall Street Journal in February 2026, has a writer calling their own commentary yapping. Calling yourself a yapper is self-deprecating, not an insult.

Yapper, yappy and other spin-offs
Wiktionary lists a whole family of derived words. Some are standard, like yapper and yappy. Some are playful coinages, like yapaholic for someone addicted to chatting, yappuccino for a chatty coffee, and yappatron. It also lists translations for the 'talk too much' sense, including Turkish çene çalmak, literally to play the chin, and Swedish bjäbba.

If someone writes 'I'm such a yapper' under a long caption, they're apologising and laughing at themselves at the same time. A skull emoji in reply means you found it funny, not that you're bored.
Yapping vs chatting vs rambling
English has lots of words for talking too much, and they're not quite interchangeable. Wiktionary's cross-references for yap point to chatter, ramble and run off at the mouth. Chatting is neutral and friendly. Rambling suggests losing the thread. Yapping adds speed and noise, the small-dog energy that the word started with. That's why it's the go-to word for a fast, funny voice note or a friend who sends ten messages in a row.
Texting shorthand keeps growing, and our guide to cooked covers one more you may see.
Is it rude to say someone's yapping?
It depends who's saying it and to whom. Among friends, 'you're yapping' is teasing. In a work chat, it can sting, because it suggests what someone said wasn't worth hearing. I'd keep it for yourself, as in 'sorry, I was yapping', rather than aiming it at a colleague or a customer.
It often sits next to other chatty slang. If someone overshares while yapping, that's TMI, and if they start a yap with 'not gonna lie', my guide to NGL explains what's coming next.
