What Does "Side Hustle Secrets" Really Mean? A Reality Check From Someone Who's Run Six of Them

Straight answer: "Side hustle secrets" almost never means a secret. It means a sales page, an email funnel, or a YouTube thumbnail promising you a shortcut to money that most people who make real money on the side never needed. Strip away the marketing and what's left is usually one of six well-worn business models, plus the unglamorous truth that consistency beats cleverness every single time.

Type "side hustle secrets" into Google and you'll get a wave of blog posts, a few paid courses (some priced at 197 pounds, some at 997 pounds), and dozens of YouTube videos with red-circle thumbnails pointing at bank account screenshots. The phrase spread because "side hustle" itself exploded during and after the cost of living squeeze in the UK and US. Google Trends shows searches for "side hustle" roughly tripling between 2019 and 2023. Add the word "secrets" and you tap straight into curiosity gap marketing, the same trick used for decades in weight loss and get rich quick sales pages, just with a friendlier coat of paint.

I've been an ex-influencer and I've watched this pattern from the inside. The word "secrets" does one job: it implies information is being withheld from you unless you buy something. That's the whole mechanism. It's not a conspiracy, it's copywriting, and once you see it you can't unsee it.

What people mean when they search this

When someone types "what does side hustle secrets really mean" into a search bar, they're usually one of three people:

  • Someone who just watched a video promising a specific dollar or pound figure and wants to know if it's real before they pull out a card
  • Someone who bought a course already and is trying to work out why the results don't match the sales page
  • Someone tired, skint, and hunting for a way to make an extra 300 or 500 pounds a month without quitting their job

If you're in that third group, good, because that's who this post is for. Not the person chasing a fantasy, the person doing the maths on rent.

The six things "secrets" almost always turns out to be

After looking at more of these funnels than I'd like to admit, and building a few side income streams myself while rebuilding my own business, the "secrets" nearly always resolve into one of these:

  • Freelance services (writing, design, admin support, social media management) sold on Upwork or Fiverr
  • Print on demand or dropshipping through Shopify or Etsy
  • Affiliate content, where you write reviews or guides and earn commission when someone buys through your link
  • Online courses or coaching, teaching other people how to do one of the four things above
  • Reselling, either physical goods on eBay and Vinted or digital templates on Etsy
  • Content creation on YouTube, TikTok, or a blog, monetised through ads, sponsorships, or affiliate links

That's it. There is no seventh, secret category hiding behind a paywall. Every "insider system" I've reviewed for clients over the last few years has been a variation on one of those six, dressed up with a new name and a new price tag.

My own test of a "secrets" style course

In 2021, three years into rebuilding my business after a rough patch, I paid 297 pounds for a course that promised "the side hustle secrets nobody talks about." I did this partly out of curiosity and partly because I wanted to be able to speak about this honestly with clients rather than guessing. The course was 11 modules. Modules one through four were general mindset content. Module five, the one promising a secret method, was affiliate marketing through Pinterest pins linking to Amazon products. That's a legitimate model. People do make money that way. Amazon Associates pays between 1 and 10 percent commission depending on category, so on a 40 pound product you might earn 40 pence to 4 pounds per sale. It works at volume. It is not a secret. It's in every affiliate marketing guide published since 2015.

The uncomfortable bit nobody selling these courses says out loud: the person teaching you the "secret" is usually making more money from the 297 pounds you paid for the course than from the side hustle itself. That's not a criticism of every course creator, some are honest about it, but it's the arithmetic that gets left off the sales page. If a course has an affiliate program paying the creator 40 percent commission and sells 2,000 copies at 297 pounds, that's roughly 237,000 pounds in commission payouts alone. The "secret" being sold and the "secret" being lived by the seller are often two different businesses entirely.

What separates people who make money from people who don't

I've mentored enough people through this to see the pattern clearly. It's rarely the model that decides success, it's these three things:

  • Existing skill match. Someone who already writes well for their day job will out-earn a total beginner at freelance writing within weeks, not months
  • Time protected. The people who stick with a side hustle block out the same 5 to 7 hours a week, every week, rather than binging on weekends and vanishing
  • A narrow first offer. The people who succeed pick one service, one platform, one price, and get their first 3 paying clients before they touch anything else

None of that fits on a sales page thumbnail. "Do the boring bit consistently for four months" doesn't convert as well as "Secret Method Made Me 10K This Month."

A concrete example: what six weeks of a real side hustle looks like

One of the clearest examples I've watched close up was a woman I coached who took her existing skill (bookkeeping) and turned it into a side hustle using nothing that would qualify as a "secret":

  • Week 1: set up a simple one-page site and a Google Business Profile, no course purchased
  • Week 2: reached out to 15 small local businesses she already had some connection to, offered a fixed 60 pound monthly bookkeeping tidy up
  • Week 3-4: landed 3 clients at 60 pounds each, 180 pounds a month, roughly 4 hours of work
  • Week 5-6: raised her rate to 85 pounds for new clients, kept existing ones at 60, added 2 more clients

By week 6 she was earning 350 pounds a month for around 9 hours of work, done in evenings around her full time job. No funnel, no course, no "secret." Just an existing skill, a narrow offer, and consistent outreach. That's the entire method most "side hustle secrets" content is trying to sell back to you at a markup.

How to vet a side hustle opportunity before you pay anything

If you're looking at a course, a group, or a coaching program that uses the word "secrets" in its marketing, run it through this quick check first:

  • Search the exact method being taught, without the branded name, and see how many free guides already explain it
  • Look for the income disclaimer, most legitimate courses in the US and UK are required to include one, and read what it says about typical results, not best case results
  • Ask what the refund window is and whether it's honoured, not just written
  • Check whether the seller's main income is the side hustle itself or the course teaching the side hustle
  • Work out the real hourly rate at the promised income level, not just the headline monthly figure

If you want a more grounded starting point on the whole passive income promise, I wrote an honest breakdown of what passive income requires that pairs well with this, because "side hustle secrets" and "passive income secrets" are marketed by the exact same playbook.

The side hustles that don't need a course at all

A few models don't require paying anyone for the "secret," because the entire path is publicly documented:

  • Freelance writing, where a list of publications that accept guest posts is more useful than any paid module, because it shows you exactly where editors are already looking for pitches
  • Freelance marketing or social media help for small local businesses, where a portfolio of 2 or 3 genuine case studies beats any certificate
  • Consulting in your existing field, where showing up at industry events builds pipeline faster than any funnel, and a list of marketing events worth attending is a better investment of a Saturday than another webinar

And if you're building this around a day job and need to learn on commute or during a lunch break rather than paying for a course, short podcasts under 10 minutes will teach you more usable detail than most 297 pound modules, for free, in the time it takes to make a coffee.

So what does the phrase mean, in plain terms

"Side hustle secrets" means: here is a known business model, explained with urgency, sold at a markup, using the word "secret" because it converts better than "here is a normal small business idea that takes four to six months of consistent effort." That's the whole meaning. It's not a scam in every single case, some of these courses do teach useful structure to people who'd never have started otherwise, but the phrase itself is doing marketing work, not describing hidden information.

My honest advice after building six different income streams over the last two decades, some that worked and some that quietly died: pick the model that overlaps with a skill you already have, give it 90 days of the same weekly hours before judging it, and spend your money on tools that do the work, not courses that describe the work. The secret, if there is one, is that there isn't one.

Frequently asked questions

Is "side hustle secrets" always a scam?

Not always, but the phrase itself is a marketing device, not a description of hidden information. Most courses using it teach one of six standard models, freelancing, dropshipping, affiliate content, coaching, reselling, or content creation, and the real value depends entirely on whether the seller gives you specific execution steps or just motivation.

What is the fastest legitimate side hustle to start with no money?

Freelance services in a skill you already have, like writing, admin, bookkeeping, or social media help, since you can land your first paying client within two to three weeks by pitching people you already know before spending anything on ads or courses.

How much do side hustles pay in the first few months?

Realistically expect 100 to 400 pounds a month in the first two to three months for most service-based side hustles, based on 4 to 9 hours a week, rising as you raise your rates and add clients rather than as some hidden method kicks in.

Should I pay for a side hustle course before starting?

Only after searching whether the exact method is already explained free elsewhere, checking the income disclaimer for typical rather than best case results, and confirming the refund policy, since most of what gets sold as a secret is publicly documented if you know what to search for.
