What Does OMW Mean? 'On My Way', and Why Your iPhone Already Knows It

OMW in a text means 'on my way'. Dictionary.com defines it that way, and says it can also suggest someone is heading toward a goal, an event or an adventure. On an iPhone, typing omw turns into 'On my way!' automatically, because Apple sets it up as a text replacement. Less often, OMW can mean 'oh my word'.

OMW is one of the most useful three-letter texts there is. It tells someone you're coming, saves you typing and, on an iPhone, expands itself into a full sentence. Here's what it means, where that auto-expansion comes from, the other OMWs and a little honesty about how 'on my way' people really are.

OMW: on my way

Dictionary.com's acronym entry says OMW means on my way. Wiktionary lists it as internet slang for the same phrase. It's a reply to 'where are you?' or a heads-up before you arrive.

Dictionary.com quotes a simple exchange that sums it up: 'I'm here, in front of the restaurant. Where are you?' followed by 'OMW, promise!' That 'promise' says a lot. OMW is often sent by the person who's running a bit late.

Why your iPhone types 'On my way!'

If you've typed omw and watched it turn into 'On my way!', you're not imagining it. Apple's iPhone user guide explains text replacements, shortcuts for words and phrases you use often, and gives this exact example: type 'omw' to enter 'On my way!' It says that one's already set up for you.

You can change or remove it. Apple's guide says text replacements live under Settings, then General, then Keyboard, then Text Replacement. From there you can delete the omw shortcut if it keeps tripping you up, or add your own. Plenty of people set up shortcuts for their email address or a standard reply. It's one of the most underrated time-savers on a phone.

This is also why 'On my way!' with a capital and an exclamation mark can feel oddly formal from a friend. They probably typed three lazy letters and the phone did the rest.

OMW to a goal, not just a place

Dictionary.com notes a second, more figurative use: OMW can imply that someone is moving toward a goal, an event or an adventure. It quotes a 2018 post, '#OMW to owning my life', and another, 'Beach sunset and laughs? #omw'. In hashtags, OMW is less about travel and more about mindset.

  • 'OMW to the gym' Literal, maybe.
  • '#OMW to my first marathon' A goal in progress.
  • 'OMW to being a morning person' Optimistic, possibly a joke.

OMW as 'oh my word'

Wiktionary lists a second interjection: OMW as oh my word. It's a gentler cousin of OMG, used for surprise without invoking God. If someone replies 'omw' to a shocking photo rather than a question about where they are, that's the meaning. My guide to OML covers another polite variation, oh my Lord.

Wiktionary also lists a technical OMW: olive mill wastewater, the liquid left over from producing olive oil. You'll only meet that one in agriculture and environmental science, so it's safe to assume a friend isn't texting you about it.

How on-my-way is OMW?

Let's be honest, OMW covers a wide range. It might mean you're in the car. It might mean you're putting your shoes on. It might mean you've just stepped out of the shower. The abbreviation doesn't come with a timestamp.

They sendProbably means
'omw' straight after 'where are you?'Leaving now or about to
'omw, 10 mins'Out the door, with an estimate
'OMW, promise!'Running late and knows it
'On my way!' from an iPhoneTyped omw, phone expanded it

If timing matters, ask for an ETA. 'Great, how long?' is perfectly polite. And if you're the one sending it, adding a time ('omw, 15 mins') saves a follow-up text and a lot of waiting around.

Why OMW beats a phone call

There's a reason OMW became so common: it's the least intrusive way to update someone. A call interrupts, a long text takes time to type while you're rushing out the door, and silence leaves people wondering. Three letters, or the full 'On my way!' your phone fills in, tells them all they need to know in a second.

How to reply to OMW

A simple 'great, see you soon' or a thumbs-up is all OMW needs. If you're waiting somewhere, it helps to say where: 'I'm at the table by the window'. If they're picking you up, 'I'll be outside' saves a phone call. And if you suspect OMW means 'about to leave', there's nothing wrong with a friendly 'how far away are you?'

In group plans, OMW is useful for keeping everyone in the loop. One person sending it lets the others know the plan's still on. If you're the organiser, asking people to send a quick omw when they set off makes it much easier to know when to order, start or wait.

OMW and other texting shortcuts

OMW sits in a family of quick status updates. BRB means you'll be back soon, and GTG means you've got to go. Together they tell people where you are without a full sentence. They work in any messaging app, whether you're on iMessage, WhatsApp or plain texts.

Should a business use OMW?

For delivery drivers, tradespeople and anyone who travels to customers, a quick 'on my way' text is brilliant service. It cuts no-shows, calms nerves and makes you look organised. I'd write it out in full, though, with a time: 'On my way, I'll be with you around 2.15.' Customers shouldn't have to decode abbreviations, and a time turns a vague promise into a useful one. Many booking and scheduling tools can send that message automatically, which is even better.
