What Does MK Mean? Mmm Okay, Mkay, Mortal Kombat and Michael Kors Explained

MK in a text usually means "mmm okay" or "mkay", a soft, half hummed way of saying OK. Wiktionary lists mk as an alternative spelling of m'kay, and Dictionary.com defines m'kay as an informal OK. The catch is tone: Dictionary.com warns that this sound can come across as a little patronising or rude, and outside chat MK can also mean Mortal Kombat, Mario Kart or Michael Kors.

MK is tiny, but it carries more mood than plain OK. It can be a relaxed nod, a hesitant pause or a quietly unimpressed reply. Here's where it came from, how to read the tone and what the other MKs are when you see the letters in a gaming chat or under a handbag photo.

Mmm okay: the hummed MK

Dictionary.com describes mmk, the longer spelling, as a casual, half humming way to say OK. It calls it a versatile sound that can express mild disapproval and suspicion, or warm affirmation. MK is that same sound typed even faster. Think of how you'd say "mm, okay" out loud when you're thinking something over, or when you're agreeing but not thrilled.

That's why MK isn't quite the same as OK. It's OK with a facial expression attached, and in text you can't see the face.

Wiktionary files mk under English internet and texting slang, as an alternative spelling of m'kay. You'll also see mmk, mkay and m'kay used for the same sound, and they all carry roughly the same mix of agreement and attitude. The more letters someone adds, the more deliberate it tends to feel.

Where mkay came from: South Park and Office Space

Dictionary.com says people have probably been making this sound for as long as OK has existed, but informal sounds don't always get written down. It traces the written mkay to a South Park Usenet group in 1998. The show's school counsellor, Mr. Mackey, uses a droning mkay as his catchphrase, mocking the way some educators tag it onto sentences until it means nothing.

A year later, the 1999 comedy Office Space added another famous example. Office manager Bill Lumbergh ends his demands with mmk, which Dictionary.com says is meant to soften unrealistic requests but comes across as grating and condescending. Those two characters are a big reason mkay can still sound sarcastic.

Dictionary.com also notes a mix-up to avoid: mmk isn't the same as MMK, the acronym for the long running Filipino TV drama Maalaala Mo Kaya. If you see MMK in a TV fan thread, that's the show, not a hummed OK.

Warm or cold? Reading the tone of an MK

Dictionary.com points out that position changes the meaning. If someone starts a sentence with mmk, they might be puzzling over something or focusing on a task. If they end with it, they might be checking you understand, or trying to comfort you. Online, it adds, the tone is harder to read, because people often use it, and read it, with extra sarcasm.

  • Friendly: "see you at 8 mk?" is a light check that you're both on the same page.
  • Neutral: a lone "mk" after you've explained something often just means got it.
  • Frosty: "mk" straight after a long, heartfelt message can feel like a shrug.
  • Mocking: "you're totally right mkay" with an eye roll emoji is meant as a dig.

Mortal Kombat, Mario Kart and Michael Kors

Outside texting, MK is a well known set of initials. Wiktionary lists Mortal Kombat and Mario Kart among its MK meanings, and Wikipedia's MK page adds a few more:

  • Mortal Kombat: the long running fighting game series.
  • Mario Kart: the racing game series built around Mario characters.
  • Michael Kors: the American fashion brand, often shortened to MK on bags and in shopping posts.
  • Milton Keynes: a city in southern England, abbreviated locally as MK, as in the MK Dons football club.

Which MK is it? Clues by setting

Where you see MKProbable meaningWhat gives it away
A reply in a DM or textMmm okayIt answers something you just said
A gaming lobby or stream chatMortal Kombat or Mario KartCharacters, tracks, fatalities or lap times
A fashion haul or resale postMichael KorsBags, watches, logos or sizes
A UK local news or football threadMilton KeynesPlace names, fixtures or the Dons
A sentence ending in a question markMkay, checking you agree"Be ready by 6 mk?"

Invented MK chats to show the moods

These are made-up messages to show how MK is used:

  • "I'll grab the snacks, you bring the drinks" "mk"
  • "So I told her the whole story and she said I overreacted" "mk..."
  • "Anyone up for MK tonight? I need a rematch on Rainbow Road"
  • "Found an MK tote at the charity shop, still has the tag"

The first is a neutral got it, the second's a doubtful pause, the third's Mario Kart and the last is Michael Kors.

Answering an MK without making it awkward

If the MK feels neutral, you don't need to reply at all. If it feels cold, it's fine to check gently: "you OK with that?" opens the door without accusing anyone of anything. If it came at the end of a question, answer the question. And if you're the one sending it, add a word or an emoji when you mean it warmly, because a bare mk can land like a sigh. A shake of the head in text is SMH, and if you've changed your mind entirely, NVM is the shortcut people use.

My take on MK in customer messages

I wouldn't use MK on a business account. It's too easy to read as sarcastic, and the Office Space association hasn't gone away. When a customer explains a problem, "OK, thanks for explaining, I'll sort it now" says the same thing with none of the risk.

If you sell or post about fashion, gaming or a Milton Keynes business, it's fine to use MK as the brand or place name, as long as the rest of the post makes it obvious. Spell it out in the first mention and use MK after that.

Another pair of letters with a casual reading and a technical one is MB, shown in the MB meaning guide.
