JK means 'just kidding'. Wiktionary lists it as internet slang and texting shorthand for just kidding, and Merriam-Webster notes the spellings jk, JK and, less often, j/k or J/K. You add it after a line to show you were joking, or to soften something that might sound harsh. It works best when the joke was obvious anyway.
JK is the texting version of a wink. Two letters that say 'don't take that seriously'. It's been around for a long time and still turns up everywhere, from family group chats to comment sections. But it doesn't always land the way people hope. Here's what it means, how to use it well and the other JKs you might see.
Just kidding, the dictionary version
Wiktionary's JK entry gives the phrase sense plainly: an initialism of 'just kidding', marked as internet slang and texting. It lists jk and j/k as other ways to write it. Merriam-Webster's entry backs that up, with jk as the main form and JK, j/k and J/K as variants.
Merriam-Webster's examples show the typical shape. One is 'Lol, jk', tacked onto the end of a playful complaint. Another describes someone who made up a story about a bad day, then admitted 'JK, I had the best day ever!'. In both cases, the JK flips what came before it.
Two ways JK gets used
| Use | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Flagging a joke | Makes sure the joke reads as a joke | 'I'm never speaking to you again. jk' |
| Taking something back | Reverses a fake statement | 'I failed. jk, I passed!' |
| Softening a jab | Cushions teasing | 'Your cooking is a crime jk' |
| Covering a real feeling | Hides something meant | 'Guess I'm not invited lol jk' |
The first two are harmless. The last one is where JK gets interesting, and sometimes uncomfortable.
When 'jk' isn't really a joke
People sometimes add jk to say something true while keeping an escape route. 'You never text me first, jk' might be a light tease, or it might be a real complaint wrapped in a joke so it doesn't feel too heavy. The jk gives both people permission to laugh it off.
If a jk keeps showing up after the same kind of comment, it's worth paying attention. Repeated 'jokes' about being left out, ignored or underappreciated are often the sender's way of raising something without having to start a serious conversation. A gentle 'haha, but are you ok?' can open the door.
The other JKs
Wiktionary lists several meanings of JK that have nothing to do with jokes:
- In Canada, JK is short for junior kindergarten, the year of school before senior kindergarten.
- In Indonesia, it's an abbreviation for the Special Capital Region of Jakarta.
- In India, it stands for Jammu and Kashmir.
Dictionary.com's examples for JK also show how often it appears as part of a name, most famously the author JK Rowling. So in a news headline, JK is very unlikely to mean just kidding.
Is JK dated?
JK has been around since early chat rooms, and in my experience some younger users see it as a bit old-fashioned. You'll still see it, but plenty of people now signal jokes with an emoji, 'lol', or an exaggerated tone instead. 'I'm literally never leaving my bed again 💀' doesn't need a jk to read as a joke.
That doesn't make jk wrong. It's clear, everyone understands it, and it's useful when text could be misread. If you're writing to someone who doesn't know your sense of humour well, a jk can stop a joke being taken literally.
These are invented messages to show jk in context, not real chats:
- 'I'm deleting your number. jk, see you Friday.' A clear joke.
- 'You ate the last slice?! Jk, I already had two.' Playful.
- 'I hate you jk ily' Affectionate teasing.
- 'Guess my opinion doesn't matter lol jk' Possibly a real feeling.
How to reply to a JK
- If it's obviously playful, laugh along: 'haha', a laughing emoji or a joke back.
- If the joke stung, it's fine to say so lightly: 'haha, that one hurt a bit'.
- If you think there's something real underneath, check in without making it heavy.
- If you were the one who said jk and it landed badly, a quick 'sorry, that came out wrong' fixes most of it.
If you like reaction slang, my guides to ROFL and NGL cover two more ways people frame jokes and honest opinions in text.
JK and the tone problem in text
The reason jk exists at all is that text strips out tone. Face to face, a grin or a raised eyebrow tells people you're joking. In a message, the same words can read as serious. JK fills that gap, which is why it's most useful with people who don't know you well, or when a joke is close to the line.

With close friends, you often don't need it. They know your humour, so the joke lands without a label. Adding jk to every message can even make jokes feel weaker, as if you're worried they won't be understood. If you find yourself using it a lot, it might be worth asking whether the jokes need the tag or whether the tag is doing the work.
Capitals and punctuation shift it slightly. 'JK!!' is loud and playful. 'jk' in lowercase is quick and casual. 'J/k', with the slash, looks a little older, and Merriam-Webster lists it as a less common variant. All of them mean the same thing.
Can brands use JK?
Brands use humour all the time, and a jk can make a cheeky caption feel friendly. 'Our office dog runs the company. jk. Mostly.' works because the joke is obvious and harmless. But be careful with anything that could read as a real claim. If you post a joke about a price, a delivery date or a product feature, and then add jk, some people will only see the first half. Screenshots travel without context.
In customer replies, I'd leave jk out entirely. If a customer is frustrated, a joke followed by jk can feel as though you're not taking them seriously. Save the playful tone for social posts where everyone's in on it.
