Venmo Credit Card: The New Rewards and Who Gets Which

The Venmo Credit Card is a Visa card issued by Synchrony Bank that pays cash back into your Venmo account. Cardholders approved after 9/24/2026 get 3% on dining and entertainment, 1% more for splitting the bill and 1% on everything else, while older cardholders keep the 3% top-category, 2% second-category deal.

Venmo quietly rewrote this card's rewards. If you read a review from a while back, it's probably describing the old structure, and which one you get depends entirely on the date you were approved. Here's what each group earns, what counts as each category, and the small print that decides whether you keep your cash back.

Two cards in one: old rewards vs new rewards

Approved before 9/24/2026Approved after 9/24/2026

Second rate2% on your second top category3% when you check out with Venmo or pay a business on Venmo using the card

Everything else1%, including Venmo person-to-person payments1%

The old structure suited people with one big spending habit, like groceries or travel, because the card picked your top category automatically. The new one rewards eating out, entertainment and paying with Venmo itself. If most of your spending is groceries and bills, the new deal pays 1% on them.

What counts as Dining and Entertainment

Venmo's definitions are broader than you might guess. Dining covers restaurants, quick-service places, carry-out, drive-throughs and delivery, plus bars. Entertainment includes movie theaters, concerts, amusement parks, digital goods like movies, music, games and books, streaming subscriptions, and membership sports or recreation facilities such as gyms and golf courses. That means your streaming services and gym membership can earn the top rate.

The split-the-bill bonus, and its deadline

New cardholders get an extra 1% when they split a card purchase with friends in Venmo and the friends pay them back. That's how Venmo gets to its "up to 4%" headline: 3% on dining plus 1% for splitting. The catch is timing. Venmo says the split must be completed within 30 days of the purchase. If your friends are slow, chase them, or the bonus is gone.

Where the cash back goes and how you lose it

Rewards land in your Venmo account, generally within three business days for daily rewards. Once they're there, they don't expire, and you can spend them, send them to friends, pay your card or move them to your bank.

The risk is the gap before they arrive. Venmo says rewards that haven't transferred yet can be forfeited if your card account or Venmo account is closed, suspended or unlinked, and returns or disputes can reduce what's pending. If you're thinking of closing the card, wait until the last rewards have landed.

They're separate products with separate rewards, so earning on one doesn't help the other.

How to apply and use it

  1. Open the Cards tab in the Venmo app. If you're eligible, you'll see a Venmo Credit Card section.
  2. Apply there. Venmo says there's no impact to your credit score if you're declined.
  3. If approved, use the virtual card number straight away for online shopping.
  4. Add the card to Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay for tap-to-pay.
  5. Turn on notifications so you see each purchase and reward.

Is the Venmo Credit Card worth it for you?

  • Worth it if you eat out, use streaming services or a gym, and split costs with friends on Venmo.
  • Worth it if you already pay businesses through Venmo and can fund those payments with the card.
  • Less useful if your spending is mostly groceries, fuel and bills, which earn 1% under the new structure.
  • Not worth it if you carry a balance month to month, because interest outweighs any cash back.

Paying the card with your Venmo balance

One handy feature: you can use the money in your Venmo account to pay your Venmo Credit Card bill, including the cash back you've earned. That makes it easy to recycle rewards into your balance owed. You can also manage notifications, check spending and see rewards from inside the Venmo app, so there's no separate card app to download.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

For questions about the card itself, like your credit limit or a disputed charge, Venmo sends you to Synchrony Bank, the issuer. For daily cash back questions, it's Venmo Support. Knowing which one to contact saves you a wasted call.

My verdict

For someone who eats out, streams and splits bills through Venmo, the new structure is a good everyday card with no annual fee. For a household whose spending is mostly groceries and utilities, 1% is ordinary, and existing cardholders on the older deal may be better off keeping it than reapplying. Whatever card you choose, pay it in full: credit card APR wipes out cash back fast. If you're building credit first, see my checks on CreditWise and Credit One.
