TikTok templates are ready-made effect layouts you drop your own photos and videos into. Tap Add post, then Create, pick or search for a template, tap Try this template and choose your clips. Templates aren't available to everyone yet, and business accounts can only use ones with commercially licensed music.
Templates are the shortcut behind a lot of polished-looking TikToks. Someone else has already worked out the timing, transitions and effects; you just add your own photos or clips. TikTok calls them effect templates, and they live in a place many people never tap. Here's how to find them and the rules that decide whether you can use them.
How to use a template on TikTok
- Open TikTok and tap the Add post + button at the bottom.
- Tap Create at the bottom.
- Browse or search for a template.
- Tap Try this template.
- Select the photos or videos you want to add.
- Follow the steps to finish the template edits, then post as normal.
Who can use TikTok templates
| Account | Template rule from TikTok |
|---|---|
| Personal account | Available, but not to everyone yet |
| Business Account | Only templates made with music licensed for commercial use |
TikTok says effect templates aren't currently available to everyone. If you don't see Create, update the app and check again later. For Business Accounts, the music rule matters: you can only use templates built with music that's licensed for commercial use, so many trending templates with popular songs won't show for you.
Picking the right template
- Count the slots. Some templates want a handful of photos, others want many clips. Pick one that fits what you've got.
- Match the pace. Fast cuts suit energetic content. Slow fades suit calm, aesthetic posts.
- Check the music. The template's sound is part of the style. Make sure it fits your message.
- Preview first. Run through the template with your clips before posting.
Templates vs editing it yourself
Templates are quick, but you're working inside someone else's design. If you want more control, TikTok's own editing tools let you build the same kind of look by hand. Open them with the Edit button on the side panel after you record or upload. TikTok lists overlay and sound effects, video effects, multi-track editing and AI editing effects among the tools.
There's also a middle ground: the Magic tool. TikTok says it automatically adds special effects, such as video and audio effects, in an editing style you choose. Tap Magic, pick a style and tap Continue. It's like a template that adapts to your own clips.
Limits to know when you edit
| Limit | From TikTok's help |
|---|---|
| Items in one editing session | Up to 35 photos and videos |
| Overlay items | Up to 8 |
| Sounds per post | One |
These limits apply to TikTok's editing tools generally, so they're handy to know if you mix a template with your own edits.
Why can't I find templates on TikTok?
- Not available to you yet. TikTok says templates aren't available to everyone.
- You're on a Business Account. You'll only see templates with commercially licensed music.
- Old app version. Update TikTok and look under Add post, then Create.
- You're looking in the wrong place. Templates sit under Create, not under Effects on the recording screen.
Templates for small businesses
If you run a business account, templates can still save time, as long as you stick to the ones with commercial music. Product showcases, before-and-after reveals and quick tips all suit templates. Keep your branding consistent by using the same few templates for regular content, so followers recognise your posts. If you want to add your own captions afterwards, here's how to add captions on TikTok, and for background effects see how to use green screen on TikTok.
Making templates look like yours
The risk with templates is looking like everyone else. A few ways to stand out: use your own original photos rather than stock images, add a short text hook at the start, and write a caption that's personal to you. The template gives you the structure; your content and voice make it yours.
A simple workflow for template videos
- Gather your photos or clips in one album on your phone before you open TikTok.
- Open Add post, then Create, and pick a template with the right number of slots.
- Add your media in the order you want it to appear.
- Preview the full video and swap any clip that looks weak.
- Add a short text hook and a caption, then post.
Doing the prep first means the template part takes a minute, and you're not hunting through your camera roll while the editor waits.
If templates aren't showing for you yet, keep an eye on the Create section after app updates. TikTok rolls features out gradually, so the option can appear without any action from you.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
A good habit is to keep a few go-to templates for the posts you make most often, like a weekly tip or a product showcase. Using the same structure each time saves editing time and makes your videos recognisable, while your own photos, captions and voice keep each one fresh.
My verdict
TikTok templates are the fastest way to a polished edit: Add post, Create, choose a template and drop in your clips. They aren't available to everyone yet, and Business Accounts only get templates with commercially licensed music. If you can't use them, the Magic tool and TikTok's editor get you most of the way there.
