If your camera isn't working in Microsoft Teams, close every other app that might be using it, check that the right camera is picked in Teams under Settings, then Devices, and make a test call. If that doesn't fix it, the usual cause is Windows camera privacy, where Camera access, Let apps access your camera and Let desktop apps access your camera all need to be on, as of October 2026.
Here's the catch. Teams can look broken when nothing in Teams is wrong. Many laptops have a physical shutter, a slider or a camera privacy key, and background blur can hide a grey privacy screen behind it. So before you change a single setting, turn off effects and look at the lens.
What you see, and what it usually means
| What you see | Most likely cause | Try this first |
|---|---|---|
| No preview or no video feed | Windows camera privacy is blocking Teams or the browser | Allow camera access in Windows privacy settings |
| No preview in Teams on the web | The browser hasn't been allowed to use the camera | Allow the camera from the address bar or site settings |
| A grey screen, lock icon or maker's privacy screen | Camera privacy mode is on | Open the shutter, press the privacy key or turn privacy mode off |
| Only your background appears | The camera is covered, or an effect sits over a privacy screen | Turn off background effects and uncover the camera |
| Blurred background but no face | Blur is hiding a privacy screen or covered lens | Turn off blur and check the camera |
| Camera works sometimes, or isn't detected | A driver or advanced camera feature | Try basic camera driver mode |
If you only want to swap what's behind you once it's working, here's how changing your Teams background works.
Check Teams' own camera settings
- In the Teams desktop app, select Settings and more, then Settings, then Devices.
- Under the video settings, choose your camera from the Camera dropdown and check the preview.
- If a virtual camera is selected, switch to your built-in or connected physical camera, because a virtual one can show an unexpected image or another app's feed.
- Under Audio settings, select Make a test call.
The test call bot records a short message, plays it back and gives you a summary of how your mic, speaker and camera are working, and Microsoft deletes the recording straight after. As of October 2026, it's only in English, and it isn't available in Teams on the web. The same Devices screen has Adjust brightness for low light, Soft focus and Green screen, which helps with virtual backgrounds.
Windows camera permissions for Teams
- Select Start, then Settings, then Privacy & security, then Camera.
- Turn Camera access on.
- Turn Let apps access your camera on, and turn on Microsoft Teams if it's listed.
- Turn Let desktop apps access your camera on.
- If a toggle is already on, turn it off and back on, then close everything and restart.
Here's the bit that trips people up. Windows treats browsers and video apps like Teams as desktop apps, and you can't switch camera access on or off for individual desktop apps. It's one toggle for all of them. If Camera access is greyed out, an administrator on the device has to change it.
Teams on the web: the browser has to agree too
When you join from a browser, Windows and the browser both have to allow the camera. If the browser blocks it, Teams can open normally and still show no video. The quickest fix is the site permissions menu next to the web address: set Camera to Allow, refresh, and rejoin. For a default setting, as of October 2026:
| Browser | Where the camera setting lives |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Edge | Settings, Privacy, search, and services, Site permissions, All permissions, Camera: turn on Ask before accessing |
| Google Chrome | Settings, Privacy and security, Site settings, Permissions: Sites can ask to use your camera |
| Safari | Settings, Websites, Camera: Ask or Allow for other websites |
| Firefox | Settings, Privacy & Security, Permissions, Camera: allow the Teams site |
If you're using an app inside Teams, open More options, then App permissions, and toggle device access on.
Work Teams vs personal Teams
On a work or school account, some camera settings may be managed by your IT admin, so ask them before you go hunting. Error 0xA00F4292 means camera access is restricted by policy. If you run Teams on a virtual desktop, that's an IT job too. On a Mac, open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Camera, and make sure Microsoft Teams (work or school) is selected. Microsoft's personal Teams guide is written for Windows users, and its first fix is the same Windows privacy check.
When the camera itself is the problem
Open the Windows Camera app. If it shows the same grey screen or lock icon, the problem is outside Teams. On a Lenovo laptop, check camera privacy in Lenovo Vantage or try the privacy shortcut key, often F8. If the camera drops in and out, go to your camera settings, open Advanced camera options and turn on Basic camera driver mode. It can switch off some of the maker's extra features, but it makes the camera more reliable.
| Windows camera error | What it means |
|---|---|
| 0xA00F4244 | Windows can't detect the camera |
| 0xA00F4243 or 0xA00F4289 | Another app or process is using the camera |
| 0x80070005 | Access to the camera is denied |
| 0xA00F4246 | Security software has locked the camera |
| 0xC00D7167 | A camera component needs a restart |
For an external webcam, try another USB port, and remember that waking from sleep isn't the same as a restart. If Teams is misbehaving in other ways too, my guide to Teams not working covers the wider fixes.

My verdict on a Teams camera that won't work
I'd check in this order: the lens and privacy key, other apps holding the camera, the Teams camera dropdown, then the Windows desktop apps toggle. That order runs from the quickest checks to the slowest. I'd leave drivers for last. And if it's a work laptop and a toggle is greyed out, don't fight it, because that's your IT team's setting.

Check the camera picked in Teams under Settings, then Devices, and make sure no virtual camera is selected. Then check the Let desktop apps access your camera toggle in Windows.
Why does Teams show a grey screen with a lock icon?
Camera privacy mode is on. Open the camera shutter, press the camera privacy key, or turn privacy mode off in the manufacturer's app.
Can I make a Teams test call on the web?
No. The test call feature isn't available for Teams on the web, and it's only in English for now.
Why can't I turn on camera access in Windows?
If Camera access is greyed out, an administrator on the device has to turn it on for you.
Which browsers support Teams on the web?
Microsoft lists Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox for Teams on the web.
