A Stripe payout is the transfer of your available Stripe balance to your bank account, sent on a schedule you choose: daily, weekly, monthly or manual. Your first payout typically completes 7 to 14 days after your first live payment, and from then on your country's settlement timing, not your schedule, decides when each payment becomes available to pay out.
That second sentence is where most of the confusion comes from. People switch their schedule to daily, expect yesterday's sales in the bank tomorrow, and then wonder what went wrong. Nothing went wrong. Stripe's docs say plainly that choosing a schedule doesn't change how long it takes for your pending balance to become available.
Payout schedule versus settlement timing
There are two clocks running, and they do different jobs.
- Settlement timing decides when a payment moves from pending to available. Stripe writes it as T+X days, and it varies by country.
- Your payout schedule decides when Stripe sends whatever is already available to your bank.
Stripe's own example makes it clear: with daily payouts and 3 business day settlement, today's payout contains the funds from transactions captured 3 business days earlier. A few smaller rules sit on top. Payouts scheduled on a weekend or a holiday arrive the next business day. If you pick a monthly day that doesn't exist in a given month, such as the 31st, Stripe moves the payout to the last day of that month. And Stripe processes payments and payouts on UTC time, except in Asia-Pacific markets, so the date you see on a payout can differ from your local date.
The timeline from your first sale to your bank
- Your first live payment comes in. This starts the clock on your initial payout.
- The first payout is scheduled. Stripe typically schedules it to complete within 7 to 14 days, depending on your industry, your country of operation and your risk level.
- Each later payment settles. It becomes available after your country's T+X settlement period.
- Your schedule sends it. Daily payouts go every business day, weekly or monthly payouts go on the days you picked, such as Mondays and Thursdays or the 1st and 15th, and manual payouts go when you trigger them.
- The bank receives it. Weekend and holiday payouts land the next business day.
If you're in the US and take ACH payments, there's one shortcut worth knowing. Stripe's faster ACH settlement cuts settlement for eligible merchants from 4 business days to 2 business days from payment creation, and the eligibility rules are on Stripe's ACH support page.
Automatic, manual or instant: your payout options compared
| Payout type | How fast | Cost and catch |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic daily, weekly or monthly | Sent on your schedule once the balance is available | Free. Weekends and holidays move to the next business day |
| Manual | Typically 1 to 4 business days, with same-day options in the US, the UK and the Eurozone under conditions | Not available in Brazil and India, where payouts are always automatic and daily |
| Instant Payouts | Usually within 30 minutes to a debit card or bank account | 1.5% with a minimum fee of 50 cents on Stripe's US pricing page, as of October 2026. New users aren't immediately eligible |
Manual payouts and the same-day rules
Manual payouts let you choose when and how much to send. Stripe says they typically take 1 to 4 business days to arrive. If you need it faster, same-day manual payouts exist with conditions:
- US: start the payout before 5 pm US/Eastern, on an account with standard T+2 settlement or slower. You can send up to 10 same-day manual payouts a day, each up to $1 million.
- UK: start it before 5 pm Europe/London. Up to 10 a day, each up to £1 million.
- Eurozone: same-day manual payouts are available under the conditions set out in Stripe's docs.
Instant Payouts: what they're for
Instant Payouts send funds to a supported debit card or bank account at any time, weekends and holidays included, and Stripe says funds usually appear within 30 minutes. The catch is eligibility: new Stripe users aren't immediately eligible, and you check your status in the Dashboard. I've laid out the fee and how it compares with the rest of Stripe's pricing in a separate guide, so I won't repeat it here: see what Stripe charges for Instant Payouts.
Why a payout fails or comes out of your bank
- The wrong kind of account. Stripe pays out to traditional checking and savings accounts and to virtual bank accounts such as N26, Revolut and Wise. It warns that you might see higher payout failures for non-standard accounts. Your account also has to support both credit and debit transactions.
- A negative balance. Stripe's example: you receive $100 in payments but refund $200 of earlier ones, leaving a balance of minus $100. If no new payments cover it, Stripe creates a payout that debits your bank account. You can set a minimum balance to cover refunds, disputes and fees.
- A tiny balance. The minimum payout depends on what Stripe's bank partners support. In the US, a balance under 1 cent waits until more payments come in.
Getting paid in more than one currency
Multi-currency settlement lets you add one bank account per supported settlement currency, so payments in that currency land without conversion. Payments in a currency with no matching bank account convert to your default currency. Stripe's UK example is a business with GBP as its default that adds a US dollar bank account. Some additional settlement currencies carry a fee when funds settle, so check that before you add one.

Setting up payouts in the Dashboard
- Go to Settings, then Bank accounts and currencies, and add the account that should receive your payouts.
- Choose a payout schedule, or switch to manual.
- Check the settlement timing for your country.
- Allow 7 to 14 days for the first payout after your first live payment.
- Check your Instant Payouts eligibility in the Dashboard before you plan around it.
My verdict
If you remember one thing, make it this: your schedule decides when Stripe sends, settlement decides when there's something to send. Plan your cash flow around the 7 to 14 day first payout, use a standard bank account, and keep a small minimum balance if you issue a lot of refunds. Instant Payouts are a paid convenience for an established account, not a fix for an account Stripe is still reviewing. Frequently asked questions
How long does Stripe take to pay out the first time?
Stripe says your initial payout is typically scheduled to complete within 7 to 14 days after your first live payment, depending on your industry, country of operation and risk level.
Does a daily payout schedule get me paid faster?
Not on its own. Stripe says choosing a schedule doesn't change how long your pending balance takes to become available. Settlement timing, written as T+X days, decides that.
How fast are Stripe Instant Payouts?
Stripe says funds usually appear in the associated account within 30 minutes, including weekends and holidays. New Stripe users aren't immediately eligible.
Why did Stripe take funds from my bank account?
If refunds or disputes leave your Stripe balance negative and new payments don't cover it, Stripe creates a payout that debits your bank account.
Can I pay out from Stripe manually?
Yes, in all regions except Brazil and India, where payouts are always automatic and daily. Manual payouts typically take 1 to 4 business days.
