Pick a ReferralCandy alternative by the programme you want to run. Some tools do refer-a-friend and little else, some fold referrals into loyalty points, and some are built for big brands running ambassadors and influencers too. Whichever you choose, check how it handles friends' email addresses, because that's personal data you're now responsible for.
A good referral programme feels like a favour between friends, not a coupon blast. When DTC brands start looking at ReferralCandy alternatives, it's usually because the programme has stalled: customers aren't sharing, the reward doesn't feel worth it, or referrals live in a tool that doesn't talk to the rest of the store.
For DTC marketers who want customers to bring friends
I've pitched this at the marketer inside a direct-to-consumer ecommerce brand, often a team of one or two, who owns email, retention and referrals at once. You want more customers from people who already love the product, and you want it running without daily attention. If that's you, the questions below matter more than any feature list.
What kind of programme are you running?
Refer-a-friend, simple and focused. A share link, a reward for both sides, and a dashboard. Best when your product is easy to recommend and you want it live quickly.
Referrals inside loyalty. Points for purchases, reviews and referrals, often with VIP tiers. Better for brands with repeat purchase, where the referral is one of several ways to reward a regular.
Advocacy at scale. Ambassadors, influencers and creators managed alongside customer referrals. This is where enterprise platforms earn their place, and where smaller brands can overbuy.
Eight options, in no particular order
Sorted A to Z. Each line paraphrases how the vendor describes its own product, so treat it as their claim and set up a test programme before you migrate your customers.

Questions to settle before you switch
- Do you want refer-a-friend only, or referrals inside a points scheme?
- Which reward fits your margin: store credit, a discount or a free gift?
- How does it stop people referring themselves with a second email address?
- Does the referral offer appear in checkout and customer accounts, or only on a separate page?
- Does referral data flow into your email platform so you can follow up?
- Can you see which referrers bring customers who buy again?
The self-referral question catches a lot of brands out. If the reward is store credit that anyone can claim with a second email address, some customers will, and you'll pay for orders you'd have got anyway. Ask each vendor how it spots duplicates: matching addresses, cards or devices. Also ask what happens to a referral if the friend returns the order, because you don't want to reward a sale that never stuck.
Friends' details are personal data
GOV.UK's page on data protection for your business says that if your business stores or uses personal information, including when you market your product, you have to follow data protection rules. A referral programme collects a friend's name or email address from someone else, which is easy to forget. Check where the tool stores it, how long it keeps it, and how easily the friend can say no to further emails.
Reviews and referrals often work as a pair for DTC brands. If you're sorting both, these Shopify review apps are a good next read, and my Shopify review looks at the platform most of these tools plug into.

Advice before you move your programme
Don't copy the old programme across unchanged. Use the switch to fix whatever stopped it working, whether that's the reward, the moment you ask, or where the share link appears. Ask for the referral right after a happy moment, like a delivery or a five-star review, and make the reward feel generous to the friend as well as the customer. Then give it a few weeks of real orders before you judge it.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between referral and affiliate software?
Referral software rewards customers for bringing friends. Affiliate software pays partners, creators or publishers commission on the sales they send. Check what each tool covers before you trial it.
Should both people get a reward?
Usually it helps. A two-sided reward means the customer isn't asking a favour, they're passing on a gift. Test the size of the reward against your margin rather than copying a competitor.
Can I run referrals and loyalty in the same tool?
Yes. Several platforms here put referrals inside a points or VIP scheme. That works well for brands with repeat purchase. If customers buy once, a simple refer-a-friend tool is often enough. You can always add points later once you know your customers come back, and it's easier to grow a simple programme than to strip back a complicated one nobody uses.
Do I need consent to email a referred friend?
Check the data protection rules that apply to your business, starting with GOV.UK's guidance. At the very least, tell the friend why they're getting the email, and make it easy for them to opt out.
