A Netflix household is the collection of devices connected to the internet at the main place where you watch Netflix, and you can't share your account outside it. Anyone who doesn't live with you needs their own account, or, where available, you can pay for an extra member slot on your account, as of October 2026.
Here's the rule most people miss. An extra member must be in the same country where you signed up for Netflix, and overseas territories may be blocked too. So a slot won't help a son at university abroad. Extra members also get just one profile, which can't be a Kids profile, and they can only watch on one device at a time.
Account owner vs extra member: what each one gets
| Account owner | Extra member | |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays | Pays for the account and every extra member slot | Never asked for a payment method |
| Profiles | Can transfer an existing profile to the extra member | 1, and not a Kids profile |
| Devices streaming at once | Set by the plan | 1 supported device at a time |
| Downloads | Set by the plan | 1 supported device at a time, with a monthly limit that matches the owner's plan |
| Video and audio quality | Set by the plan | Same as the owner's plan |
| Watching outside the home | Yes | Yes, in the same country where the owner signed up |
| Login | Own email and password | Own account, password and profile |
Extra members don't affect the account owner's experience, and the owner manages every addition and removal. Not every account can add one: slots aren't available on third-party billed accounts or on some package-billed accounts, although mobile carrier billing is fine.
How to add an extra member from a web browser
- Go to netflix.com/account and sign in if you need to.
- Select Buy an extra member slot, then choose Next.
- Review and confirm your new payment amount. You won't be charged until you confirm it, but your billing date may change, or you may be charged a prorated amount.
- Select Buy Now.
- Enter the extra member's name, their email address and your name, then choose Next.
- Choose whether to transfer one of your existing profiles to them or let them create a new one.
- Netflix emails them a unique invitation link, and you'll be notified when they activate. You can also copy the link under Manage extra members and send it yourself.
On a TV, the prompt looks different. If you see Trying to share Netflix outside your household? after picking a profile, select Show Details, then Buy Now, and enter the extra member's phone number. Netflix texts them the invitation link. If your account is billed through a package, adding a slot isn't supported on TVs or streaming devices, so use a browser, and you'll need a credit or debit card on file because the package bill doesn't cover extra members. Cash, direct debit and gift cards can't pay for the first charge.
Moving a profile across so nothing is lost
When you buy the slot, you can transfer an existing profile so the person keeps their recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games and settings. There are limits, though. Kids profiles, PIN-protected profiles and the main profile can't be transferred, and you won't get the option if there's only one profile on your account or if the extra member used to have their own account. If they accept the transfer, the profile disappears from your account. If they turn it down and start fresh, it stays with you.
The invitation link expires after 72 hours
This is where invitations stall. The link in the email or text only lasts 72 hours. If it runs out, the extra member can open Netflix on their own device, choose a profile, select Activate Now on the Activate extra member to watch now screen and enter their phone number. If the link keeps opening a sign-in screen or the app instead of a browser, copy it and paste it into a web browser. Extra members must agree to section 3 of the Netflix Terms of Use when they activate.
Changing, cancelling or restarting a slot
| What you want | What happens |
|---|---|
| Swap the person | Allowed up to 2 times per calendar month; the current extra member loses access immediately |
| Cancel the slot | They keep watching until the end of the current billing period |
| Undo a cancellation | Select Restart, as long as the billing period hasn't ended |
| Cancel your own account | Every extra member slot is cancelled with it |
| Link your account to a package | If the package allows fewer slots, or none, extra members are cancelled immediately |
All three slot actions live at netflix.com/account/membership/extra-members: Remove recipient to change the person (or Cancel invitation if they never activated), Cancel slot to end it, and Restart to bring it back. You and the extra member both get an email confirmation each time.
When an extra member needs their own account
An extra member has to move to a separate account if they want to pay with their own card, create more than one profile, watch on more than one device at a time, or they live in a different country from where the owner signed up. They can do this from netflix.com/account by selecting Membership, then Get your own plan. One thing to watch: the owner is still charged the monthly fee for that slot until they invite someone new or cancel it. If an extra member cancels, they lose access immediately, but if they rejoin within 24 months, their profile, favourites and viewing preferences will still be there.

My verdict on Netflix household rules
I'd treat the household rule as simple: if they don't live with you, they need their own login. An extra member slot is worth it for one person in your country who only needs one screen and one profile. If they want more than that, or they're abroad, skip the slot and have them sign up on their own. Before you decide, check the current Netflix plans and extra member pricing, and if the rules push you to look elsewhere, here are the streaming services worth switching to.
