monday.com Gantt Chart: Setup, Dependencies and Plan Limits

The monday.com Gantt chart is a board view or dashboard widget that turns your board's dates into horizontal bars against a calendar, with arrows showing which tasks depend on which. You need a Timeline or Date Column with dates filled in, and as of October 2026 the Gantt view and widget are on the Standard plan and up.

The catch is dependencies. They only shift dates that already exist in your Date or Timeline Column. They don't create dates for items that are blank, so a dependency chain with empty dates simply sits there. Fill in the dates first, or use the Duration Column to generate them.

What each plan includes, as of October 2026

monday.com also says lead and lag are part of the monday AI work platform and aren't included in monday CRM or monday dev. For the full plan breakdown, see this guide to monday.com pricing.

Columns the Gantt chart needs

  • Timeline Column or Date Column: required, because it holds the dates for your tasks and phases.
  • People Column: optional, for assigning tasks to teammates.
  • Status Column: optional, for updating task status.
  • Dependency Column: optional, for setting which tasks rely on others. You can only add one per board.

How to add a Gantt chart in monday.com

  1. Fill in the dates in your Timeline or Date Column.
  2. At the top of your board, select the + that says Add View when you hover over it.
  3. Choose Gantt from the drop-down menu.
  4. To make it your default, open the three-dot menu next to Gantt in the board views section and select Set as board default.

To use it on a dashboard, add a widget and select Gantt. Subitems work in both the board view and the widget: choose which subitem columns to show under Choose Timeline columns in Settings.

Setting up dependencies

Add the Dependency Column from the + to the right of your last column, then More columns, then search the Column Center for dependency. A window then asks for two things: the time column your items depend on, and a dependency mode.

ModeWhat happens when a date changes
FlexibleDependent items only move if their dates would overlap
StrictDependent items move by exactly the same amount
No actionNothing moves. Dependencies are only shown, even when dates clash

There are four dependency types. Finish-to-start is the default and the most common: Task B can only start once Task A is finished. The others are start-to-start, finish-to-finish and start-to-finish. In strict mode you can also add lag, a positive number for a gap between tasks, or lead, a negative number for an overlap. monday.com's example of lag is a two-day wait between the first and second coat of paint.

On the Gantt itself, drag a delayed task's bar by the number of days it slipped and every dependent task shifts with it. The change is applied to your Main Table View too.

Baselines, milestones and critical path

A baseline is a locked grey snapshot of your plan. Select Baseline at the top of the Gantt, then Add a new snapshot. Items on track show green, and anything you delay or extend turns red along with its dependent items. Milestones show as diamonds: in the Timeline Column settings, select Customize Timeline Column and tick Show Set as milestone. On project-specific boards that option is already there. Critical path highlights every task that must finish for the project to land on time.

Settings worth changing

  • Group by group, board or column, and sort grouped sections.
  • Label by and Color by, plus a color legend under Visual settings.
  • Set the month your fiscal year starts.
  • View by days, weeks, months, quarters or years, or use Auto Fit.
  • Show Today Indication adds a blue line for today's date.
  • Ctrl + G expands or collapses groups.

Weekends are two settings. Toggling off Show Weekends hides them visually. Unticking Include weekends in the Timeline or Date Column settings skips them when dates are calculated. Only the account admin can change which day starts the week.

Editing and sharing from the Gantt

You don't need to switch views to make changes. Click any bar to open the item's pop-up view and edit its details or updates, including setting it as a milestone from the Timeline Column. Filters can be temporary or saved, and you can share the Gantt with a shareable link or an embed code.

Exporting your Gantt chart

Select the export arrow at the top right and choose PDF or Excel. You can export up to 10 years of timeline and up to 640 items, and anything bigger returns an error. monday.com suggests filtering out items you don't need, or dates more than three to six years from the start.

My verdict on the monday Gantt chart

I'd use it if you're on Standard or above and run projects where one late task knocks others back. Fill in every date before adding dependencies, start with flexible mode, and take a baseline the day the plan is agreed so you can show what moved. If you're new to boards and columns, here's how to use monday.com from scratch.
