To drive for Lyft in the US you need to meet your area's minimum age, which ranges from 21 to 25 depending on the region, hold a current valid driver's license and pass both a criminal background check and a DMV driving record check. Your car needs four doors, five to eight seatbelts, valid plates with current registration and insurance with your name and VIN on the policy.
Here's what catches people out. Passing once isn't the end of it. Lyft requires an up-to-date background check and DMV check to stay on the platform, and it continuously monitors the criminal and driving records of active drivers. A new violation after you're approved can still take you off the road.

Some regions don't require your name printed on the insurance policy. If yours isn't on it, ask your insurer for a declaration page that shows your name. Some cities and states also require in-state documents.
The vehicle rules
Every Lyft vehicle needs 4 doors and between 5 and 8 seatbelts, counting the driver's. Taxis and stretch limousines aren't accepted, and subcompact vehicles have been allowed since August 25, 2021. The minimum vehicle age depends on your city or state, so check it before you apply or move cities, and if your state needs an inspection, its information page has the form and nearby mechanics.
No car? Lyft's Express Drive program helps you rent one. That's the only rental route, though: a rental car has to come through Express Drive to be approved.
Driving history and ID
If your license was recently reissued, or it doesn't show an issue date, you may have extra steps in your application. Lyft doesn't accept ID from Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands or other U.S. territories as proof of driving history, unless you're authorised to provide ERT services in Puerto Rico.
What can fail a Lyft background check
Most background checks finish in a few days, but some take several weeks because of the number of agencies involved. You can follow progress in the Checkr applicant portal. You may be ineligible if the check shows you:
- Are listed on the National Sex Offender Registry database.
- Have been convicted of a disqualifying violent crime, a sexual offense or an act of terror.
- Have been convicted of driving under the influence in the past seven years.
- Have a disqualifying fraud, drug, theft or property damage conviction in the past seven years.
Lyft notes the list isn't exhaustive and time frames vary by local law. If you think the check is wrong or incomplete, dispute it with Checkr through the applicant portal. If it's accurate, you can send Lyft support documents such as a Certificate of Rehabilitation, a Certificate of Relief from Disabilities or a court approved dismissal or expungement. One thing to know: Lyft's support team can't see the details of your background check, only whether you were cleared.
What can fail the DMV check
Lyft may disqualify you for an invalid license status, four or more moving violations in the past three years, a single major violation such as reckless driving in the past three years, or a DUI or serious driving-related conviction such as a hit-and-run in the past seven years. To fix a flagged record, visit your DMV to update your license status or have violations removed, then send Lyft Support your updated motor vehicle report. Lyft won't accept receipts showing a ticket was paid, or proof you completed a defensive driving course.

My verdict on Lyft's requirements
I'd check three things before you start the application: your area's minimum age, whether your car has four doors and at least five seatbelts, and whether your insurance names you. Those are the quick fails. Enter any referral code at sign-up, because you can't add it later, and expect the background check to be the slow part. If your record has an old ticket on it, sort it with the DMV first, because a paid-ticket receipt won't count.
