LinkedIn Insight Tag: What It Tracks, How to Install It and Fixes

The LinkedIn Insight Tag is a small piece of JavaScript you add to your website so LinkedIn can track conversions from your ads, build retargeting audiences from your visitors and show you what kinds of professionals visit your site. You get it from Signals manager in Campaign Manager, and LinkedIn recommends one tag per website, shared across your ad accounts.

If you run LinkedIn ads without it, you're judging campaigns on clicks alone. With it, you can see which ads led to demo requests or sign-ups, and you can show ads again to people who visited your pricing page.

What the Insight Tag lets you do

FeatureWhat it doesWhy it matters
Conversion trackingRecords when a LinkedIn member visits a page or takes an action after seeing or clicking your adShows which campaigns lead to results, not just clicks
Website audiencesBuilds retargeting audiences from people who visited your siteLets you follow up with warm visitors
Website ActionsAutomatically logs actions on your site so you can build conversions and audiences without extra codeSaves developer time
Audience insightsAggregate reports on the professional make-up of your visitorsTells you which job titles and industries you're reaching

LinkedIn is clear that it doesn't share members' personal data with you. You get reports and alerts that don't identify anyone, plus the ability to retarget visitors without knowing who they are.

How to install the LinkedIn Insight Tag

These steps come from LinkedIn's own help page:

  1. Go to your ad account in Campaign Manager.
  2. Click Measure in the left menu, then Signals manager.
  3. Click Insight Tag, then the I will install the tag myself dropdown. You can also send the tag to a developer or use a tag manager.
  4. Copy the code from the window.
  5. Paste it on every page of your domain, ideally just before the closing body tag in your global footer.
  6. Visit your site so LinkedIn can see the tag load.

LinkedIn says validation can take anywhere from a few minutes to 24 hours after a page loads. Until someone visits, the status shows Unverified, which is normal on a brand new install.

Using a tag manager is often easier than editing your theme. LinkedIn publishes a list of compatible tag management systems, and Google Tag Manager is one of them. If you're unsure where each tool fits, my piece on Tag Manager versus Analytics explains the split.

The copy and paste mistake that breaks it

This one's easy to miss. LinkedIn warns that when the code is copied through some editors, straight quotation marks get swapped for curly ones, and the tag stops working. Paste it into a plain text editor first, or straight into your tag manager, and check the quotes before you save. LinkedIn also says not to edit the code at all: place it exactly as it comes from Campaign Manager.

How long LinkedIn keeps the data

The Insight Tag collects the page URL, referrer, IP address, device and browser details and a timestamp. Here's what LinkedIn says happens next:

  • Direct identifiers are removed within seven days, leaving pseudonymous data.
  • That remaining pseudonymous data is deleted within 180 days.
  • IP addresses are truncated or hashed.
  • If you switch on enhanced matching, email addresses are hashed on your website before they're sent.
  • Data is stored on LinkedIn's servers in the US, under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.

The tag also creates a first-party identifier called the LinkedIn Ads ID to support conversion tracking. LinkedIn says it only applies to traffic from outside the EU, EEA, Quebec and the UK, so if most of your visitors are in Britain or Europe, you won't get that extra signal.

The Microsoft data you might not know about

Here's the detail that surprises most advertisers. LinkedIn also receives data from Microsoft's UET tag, the conversion tag used by Microsoft Advertising, and uses it to capture more conversions. If both tags spot the same action, it's counted once. Data from the EEA, Switzerland and restricted countries is excluded. You can disconnect the UET data in Campaign Manager, but LinkedIn notes you may then see fewer attributed conversions.

So if your LinkedIn conversion numbers jumped without any change on your side, check whether UET data is switched on before you celebrate.

Pages where you mustn't install it

LinkedIn's terms say the tag shouldn't go on pages that collect or contain sensitive data. Its examples: a generic pharmacy or bank homepage may be fine, but consumer pages about specific medications, or pages where people manage their bank accounts or medical appointments, should not carry it. Check with whoever handles your site's legal side before installing on anything health or finance related. You're also responsible for getting any consent your visitors need before data is shared.

Gated documents give the tag something to measure, and my guide to LinkedIn document ads explains the format.

How to fix an Unverified Insight Tag

  1. Wait 24 hours after a real visit. LinkedIn says the status can take that long to turn Active.
  2. Check you copied the full code, with straight quotes.
  3. Confirm the Partner ID in your site's code matches your ad account. It's the number after _linkedin_data_partner_id near the top of the script.
  4. Open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab and filter for ads.linkedin.com. LinkedIn says you should see a 302 status code.
  5. If you use a container tag, make sure it's one of LinkedIn's supported integrations.

Once the tag is live, you can track campaigns from LinkedIn's ad tools. If you're still choosing tools, my guide to LinkedIn analytics tools covers what each one measures.

My verdict

Install the Insight Tag before you spend a penny on LinkedIn ads. It takes minutes, LinkedIn says it loads asynchronously so it shouldn't slow your site, and without it you can't retarget or measure what matters. Use one tag per site, share it across ad accounts, keep it off sensitive pages, and keep an eye on the Microsoft UET setting so you know where your conversions are coming from.

Once the tag is in, you can judge each ad format on results rather than clicks, and my guide to LinkedIn video ads explains the video one.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my LinkedIn Insight Tag?

In Campaign Manager, open your ad account, click Measure in the left menu, then Signals manager, then Insight Tag.

Does the LinkedIn Insight Tag slow down my website?

LinkedIn says the tag loads asynchronously and uses Gzip compression, so it shouldn't slow down your website.

Why does my Insight Tag say Unverified?

LinkedIn shows Unverified until it receives signal from the tag. Visit a page with the tag, then allow up to 24 hours for the status to switch to Active.

Can I use one Insight Tag for several ad accounts?

Yes. LinkedIn recommends one Insight Tag per website and lets you share it across ad accounts so each one receives data from the same tag.
