LinkedIn Ads Targeting: Every Option, the Rules and What's Required

LinkedIn ads targeting lets you reach people by location, by audience attributes such as company, job experience, education, devices, demographics, and interests and traits, and by custom audiences you build with Matched Audiences or predictive audiences. Location and profile language is the one section LinkedIn marks as required, and you can either build the audience yourself or let Auto-Targeting build it for you.

Here's the catch. Pick English as the profile language and LinkedIn shows your ads to every member in your chosen locations, whatever language their profile is in. And two of the attributes people reach for first, age and gender, stay locked until you tick a certification box promising not to discriminate.

Build your own audience or use Auto-Targeting

Ad set typeHow LinkedIn describes it, as of October 2026
Build your own audienceUses every targeting option, gives you the most control and takes the most manual work
Auto-TargetingCombines LinkedIn's professional audience, platform signals and your inputs to build the audience for you, and you can still add signals to adjust it

Auto-Targeting is LinkedIn's answer to time spent on audience building. If you know exactly who buys from you, building your own still gives you the tightest control. If you're testing a new market, Auto-Targeting saves you guessing.

Every LinkedIn targeting option

Targeting optionWhat it covers
Location and profile languageRequired. Where your audience is and the language on their profile.
CompanyCompany attributes
ProfessionalJob experience and education
DemographicsIncluding age and gender, once you've certified
DevicesThe devices members use
Interests and traitsMember interests and traits
Matched AudiencesList uploads, retargeting and third-party audiences
Predictive audiencesLinkedIn's predictive audiences, built from your inputs
Saved audiences and templatesAudiences you've saved, or LinkedIn's ready-made templates

LinkedIn also says all targeting is subject to members' preferences, and that targeting options and estimated audience sizes change from time to time. Reach for some attributes or audiences may be limited when you target the European Economic Area or Switzerland.

The location and language rules

For location you choose between Recent or permanent location, Permanent location, or Recent location, then search and tick the places you want. You can also click Exclude to remove places. You can only choose one profile language per audience.

The English rule is the one that catches people. Choosing English targets all member accounts in your chosen location regardless of the language on their profiles. LinkedIn notes this doesn't apply to its messaging ads.

How to build your own LinkedIn audience

  1. Set up your ad set in Campaign Manager, choose your objective and campaign, and click Next.
  2. Optionally add your company's URL in What You're Marketing. You don't need one if you're building your own audience.
  3. In the Audience section, choose an existing data source, audience attributes, or both. Existing sources include Saved Audiences, LinkedIn templates and Matched Audiences.
  4. In Where is your target audience?, review the suggested locations, pick the location type, add or exclude places, and choose one profile language.
  5. In Who is your target audience?, add audience segments or attributes from Company, Demographics, Devices, Education, Job Experience, and Interests and Traits.
  6. Tick or clear Enable Audience Expansion.
  7. Click View audience summary to check it, then Save audience to reuse it on other ad sets.

If you get in a muddle, Reset audience at the bottom of the section clears every selection. For a tour of the rest of the tool, here's my guide to LinkedIn Campaign Manager.

How attributes combine

This trips up a lot of first campaigns. Adding more attributes within the same facet expands your audience, it doesn't narrow it. Adding three job titles reaches people with any of the three. To narrow, you combine different facets using LinkedIn's AND-OR targeting. LinkedIn's best practice guide covers using attributes to expand or narrow audience size, and it offers a free 45-minute course called Using LinkedIn's Ad Targeting if you want to go deeper.

Age, gender and the certification checkbox

LinkedIn's advertising policies don't allow ads that promote discriminatory hiring or the denial of education, housing or economic opportunity, and it takes down ads flagged as discriminatory.

AttributeWhat unlocks itLimits
GenderCertifying by checkbox that ads about employment, housing, education or credit won't discriminate by genderUnavailable until you tick the box
Age rangeThe same certification, for ageNot available at all for talent leads or job recruitment objectives
Under 18sCan't be unlockedNo age range can include members under 18

In the Designated Countries and Brazil, LinkedIn also tries to exclude members whose profiles suggest they may be under 18 from any targeted audience.

Targeting LinkedIn Groups

Groups aren't available for ad audiences in some countries, including the Designated Countries. Where they are, the group type decides who can target it.

Matched Audiences you can build

Matched Audiences are where LinkedIn targeting gets personal. You can upload company and contact lists, connect a marketing partner, or build retargeting audiences from people who engaged with your single image ads, videos, Lead Gen Forms, conversation ads, Company Page or events. If you already run Lead Gen Forms, the people who engaged with them can become an audience of their own, and my guide to LinkedIn Lead Gen Forms covers setting those up.

My verdict on LinkedIn targeting

Start with location and language, and if your audience speaks English, be clear that English reaches everyone in those places. Add one facet at a time, remembering that more choices in the same facet widen the net. Save the audience once it's right so every ad set uses it. And if you sell to people who've already shown interest, a Matched Audience will usually beat a cold attribute build.

Targeting finds the right people on LinkedIn. Getting your business named when those same people ask an AI tool for help is where I come in. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement, AI automation and GEO, which is about getting your business seen and cited in AI answers. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.

Frequently asked questions

What is required in LinkedIn ads targeting?

Location and profile language is the section LinkedIn marks as required. You can only choose one profile language per audience.

Why can't I target by age on LinkedIn?

You need to certify by checkbox that ads about employment, housing, education or credit won't discriminate. Age targeting isn't available at all for talent leads or job recruitment objectives.

Does choosing English limit my LinkedIn audience?

No. Choosing English targets all members in your chosen locations, whatever language their profile is in. This doesn't apply to LinkedIn's messaging ads.

Does adding more job titles narrow my LinkedIn audience?

No. Adding attributes within the same targeting facet expands your audience. Use AND-OR targeting across different facets to narrow it.

What is LinkedIn Auto-Targeting?

Auto-Targeting combines LinkedIn's professional audience, platform signals and your inputs to build an audience for your ad set automatically.
