Quick Verdict
- Kong AI Gateway: a mature, policy-rich AI layer on top of Kong Gateway, rated 4.4/5 from 356 reviews on G2's Kong Konnect listing.
- nexos.ai - Best for Enterprise: nexos.ai is the top alternative for teams that want a managed AI Gateway with SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 certification and EU-hosted infrastructure.
- Apigee - Best for Google Cloud APIs: Apigee is the natural switch for organisations already running Apigee or building on Gemini and Vertex AI.
- Tyk AI Studio - Best for Open-Source Governance: Tyk AI Studio offers a free Community Edition plus an Enterprise tier with budgets, RBAC and audit trails.
- The deciding factor: Kong shines when you already operate it; teams starting fresh often prefer a platform built around AI traffic from the start.
Kong AI Gateway is a strong product, so a fair review comes down to fit. It is a capable choice for teams already running Kong. For enterprise teams that want certified, managed AI governance without gateway infrastructure, the AI Gateway from nexos.ai is the better fit.
AI traffic now runs through the same infrastructure as every other application request. Eurostat's 2025 survey of EU enterprises found that 20% of businesses with 10 or more employees used AI, up 6.5 percentage points in a year, and 55% of large enterprises already did. Much of that usage flows through APIs, which is why API-gateway vendors like Kong moved into AI.
The UK NCSC's Guidelines for secure AI system development treat secure operation and maintenance, including logging and monitoring, as a stage of its own. An AI gateway is where those runtime controls live for model traffic.
We worked through Kong's AI Gateway documentation, Konnect pricing and hundreds of published user ratings, then lined up three alternatives against them.

What Kong AI Gateway Is
Kong AI Gateway is a set of AI policies that run on Kong Gateway, so LLM, MCP and agent-to-agent traffic share one endpoint with your existing APIs. Kong began in Milan in 2009 as Mashape, and its core gateway is open source under Apache 2.0.
The architecture follows a hybrid model. The data plane runs self-hosted, on Kubernetes or on Kong-managed Dedicated Cloud Gateways, and Konnect provides the cloud control plane.
Existing customers benefit most from that design. The same authentication, rate limiting and observability used for REST APIs extends to model calls without a second platform.
Key AI Features and Routing
Kong's AI capabilities are delivered as policies you attach to services and routes. The ones that matter most:
- AI Proxy Advanced: AI Proxy Advanced load-balances across providers using round-robin, consistent-hashing, least-connections, lowest-latency, lowest-usage, priority or semantic algorithms, with configurable retries and failover.
- AI Semantic Cache: AI Semantic Cache returns cached answers for semantically similar prompts.
- AI Sanitizer: AI Sanitizer redacts PII before prompts reach a model.
- AI Semantic Prompt Guard: AI Semantic Prompt Guard blocks off-limits topics through semantic allow and deny lists.
- AI Rate Limiting Advanced: AI Rate Limiting Advanced enforces cost-based limits per consumer.
- MCP support: Kong supports MCP server entities with OAuth2 scoping and tool aggregation.
The routing engine is the most granular we've evaluated in this category. The catch is licensing. AI Proxy Advanced, AI Semantic Cache, AI Sanitizer, AI Semantic Prompt Guard and AI Rate Limiting Advanced all require an AI licence. That licence comes only with Kong's AI Gateway Enterprise offering.
Kong AI Gateway Pricing, Worked Through
Konnect's pricing page lists AI Gateway as "included", yet the bill depends on services and requests. On the Konnect Plus plan, self-hosted or Dedicated Cloud gateways cost $105 per gateway service per month plus $34.25 per million requests.
Take five gateway services handling 20 million requests a month. That comes to $525 in service fees plus $685 in request fees, about $1,210 per month. Advanced analytics (an extra $20 per million requests), Dedicated Cloud infrastructure and Enterprise licensing all cost extra.
Kong bills Enterprise plans annually. Business support starts from $210 per service, Platinum from $250 and Diamond from $290, each with its own per-million-request rate. A Serverless option starts at $20 for the first million requests, and new accounts get a 30-day trial.
What Reviewers Praise and Flag
Kong earns broadly positive user sentiment across review platforms. Its G2 listing (Kong Konnect) shows 4.4/5 from 356 reviews, and Kong Gateway holds 4.5/5 from 153 ratings on Gartner Peer Insights, where no reviewers gave one or two stars.
Reviewers consistently praise the plugin ecosystem, Kubernetes support and the ability to run Kong anywhere. Platform engineers like that AI governance reuses infrastructure they already trust.
The recurring criticisms on Gartner Peer Insights are a steep learning curve, hard-to-navigate documentation, difficult plugin customisation and slow support on some tickets. Kong's small Trustpilot profile (3.4 from two reviews) includes a 1-star review from May 2025 about marketing outreach rather than the product:
"Sends unsolicited emails." (Trustpilot, 1-star review, 22 May 2025)
Who Kong AI Gateway Is Right For
Kong AI Gateway is the right call when Kong already fronts your APIs, your platform team is comfortable with its plugin model, and you need on-prem or hybrid deployment. Large enterprises with mature API programmes get the most from it.
Kong AI Gateway is a harder fit for teams without Kong experience, organisations that want a managed service and budgets that can't absorb per-service fees as AI use spreads.
3 Best Kong AI Gateway Alternatives

1. nexos.ai - Best for Enterprise
nexos.ai approaches AI governance from the AI side rather than the API side. The all-in-one AI platform for enterprises has two products: the AI Gateway, an OpenAI-compatible endpoint for engineers, and the AI Workspace, where business teams use models and build agents under the same governance.
We found the nexos.ai setup lighter than Kong's. There are no gateway nodes or plugins to manage: developers point the OpenAI SDK at the AI Gateway endpoint and reach 200+ models from Meta Llama, DeepSeek, Mistral, OpenAI, Anthropic and Google Gemini.
Key Strengths
- Per-request model selection based on price, what each model is good at and how fast it responds, with automatic failover
- LLM caching for identical requests and provider-side prompt caching, plus spend ceilings per user or team
- LLM observability that shows usage and cost by team, user, project and model
- Scoped API keys that rotate or revoke instantly
- Audited against SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001, with GDPR compliance and an EU AI Act entry on its trust centre
- Customer prompts excluded from training by default, with a no-retention option on eligible models
Behind nexos.ai are Tomas Okmanas (CEO) and Eimantas Sabaliauskas, who earlier started Nord Security and Oxylabs. They started the company in Lithuania's capital in late 2024 and brought the security know-how behind NordVPN with them.
Online retailer Pigu.lt used nexos.ai to enrich a catalogue of 6.5 million products. On the nexos.ai reviews page, Romas Strabeika, CIO and Head of IT at Pigu.lt, describes the result:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
"What would have taken us three years and millions of euros to accomplish manually, we achieved in just six weeks at a fraction of the cost."
Recognition: Verslo žinios named it The most promising startup 2025, and it holds the Global Recognition Award 2026.
Best suited to: enterprises in the UK and Europe without an existing Kong footprint, especially CTOs and security leads who want AI governance without operating gateway nodes or plugins.
2. Apigee - Best for Google Cloud APIs
Apigee is Google Cloud's API management platform, and it has added AI policies that mirror much of Kong's toolkit. It runs as managed Apigee X or as Apigee hybrid, which is included with subscriptions. Google brought Apigee into Google Cloud through a roughly $625 million acquisition that closed in November 2016.
Key Strengths
- Token controls through LLMTokenQuota and PromptTokenLimit, generally available since 23 December 2025
- Semantic caching backed by Vertex AI Vector Search
- Prompt and response sanitisation through Model Armor
- MCP support, generally available since 31 March 2026
Apigee holds 4.5/5 from 318 ratings on Gartner Peer Insights, and new users get a free 60-day evaluation.
Recognition: Gartner named Google Cloud Apigee a Leader in the 2025 Magic Quadrant for API Management, its tenth consecutive Leader placement, and positioned it highest for Ability to Execute.
Best suited to: enterprises already running Apigee or building on Gemini and Vertex AI that want AI policies inside their Google Cloud API programme.
3. Tyk AI Studio - Best for Open-Source Governance
Tyk AI Studio is an AI governance platform that combines a gateway, a developer portal and a chat interface. Version 2.2 became generally available on 29 September 2026. London-based Tyk, founded in 2016, also maintains the open-source Tyk Gateway, which is written in Go.
Key Strengths
- A free, open-source Community Edition that runs on Docker, with a unified OpenAI-compatible endpoint and failover
- Enterprise semantic routing, semantic caching, team budgets, RBAC and an audit trail
- Guardrail connectors for Lakera, Presidio, Azure AI services and Bedrock Guardrails
- ISO 27001, ISO 9001 and SOC 2, with a HIPAA BAA available
Tyk holds 4.7/5 from 92 ratings on Gartner Peer Insights and 4.5/5 from 52 reviews on G2 for its wider API platform.
Recognition: Tyk's honours include being named in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for API Management, a Leader placement in the 2023 edition and a spot in Tech Nation's Future Fifty 2024 cohort.
Best suited to: open-source-minded platform teams and existing Tyk users, including UK organisations that prefer a London-based vendor, that want to start free and add budgets, RBAC and audit trails later.
Stay on Kong or Switch? A Decision Guide
- Kong already runs your APIs and your team knows its plugins: Kong remains the right platform, so stay and add the AI policies you need.
- You want certified AI governance without running gateway infrastructure: the nexos.ai AI Gateway is the best match.
- Your stack is built on Google Cloud, Gemini or Vertex AI: Apigee is the natural extension.
- You want an open-source starting point with a path to enterprise governance: Tyk AI Studio offers that path.
- You need to prove controls to auditors: each vendor's SOC 2 and ISO reports provide the evidence, so request them and check how its runtime controls line up with the NCSC guidance cited above and the EU AI Act.
The Bottom Line
Kong AI Gateway rewards organisations that already run Kong, extending a proven policy engine to AI traffic with little new infrastructure.
nexos.ai is the alternative we'd pick first for teams without that head start, delivering certified AI governance through its AI Gateway with no gateway nodes or plugins to run.
Apigee gives Google Cloud organisations a natural extension of their existing API programmes, and Tyk AI Studio gives open-source teams a free Community Edition with a path to enterprise governance.
Your service count and request volume should shape the cost comparison, and a pilot on one product team should confirm the fit.
