Here are 28 journal prompts for couples to answer on your own and then share, covering how well you know each other, everyday appreciation, dreams and tricky conversations. They're built on two ideas from the Gottman Institute: knowing your partner's inner world, and turning towards each other's small bids for attention.
A couples journal works best when it isn't homework. You each answer the same prompt privately, swap notebooks or read your answers aloud, and talk about what surprised you. That's it. The surprise is the point, because even couples who've been together for decades find out something new, and finding it out together is a small act of closeness in itself. I've grouped these from light and fun to deeper, so you can match the prompt to the evening you're having.
The relationship research behind these prompts
The Gottman Institute's Sound Relationship House model gives two ideas that turn a journal from nice to useful:
| Idea | What the Gottman Institute says | Prompt groups that use it |
|---|---|---|
| Love Maps | The first level of the house: knowing the little things about your partner's life, history, worries and dreams, and updating it as their world changes | Getting to know you again; dreams and the future |
| Turning towards | In a six-year follow-up of newlyweds, couples who stayed married turned towards each other's bids 86% of the time; couples who divorced averaged 33% | Everyday appreciation; noticing bids |
A bid is any small attempt to connect: a comment about the news, a sigh, a 'look at this'. The prompts in the appreciation group help you notice the bids you might be missing, which is the finding most people don't expect to matter so much.

How to run a couples journal evening
Pick a night when neither of you is exhausted and put phones in another room. Choose one prompt each, so it feels shared rather than set by one person. Give yourselves ten quiet minutes to write, then take turns reading. The listener's only job is to ask one follow-up question before responding with their own view. It sounds formal written down, but after a couple of goes it feels natural, and it's surprising how often the follow-up question is where the real conversation starts. If one of you prefers talking to writing, that's fine too; jot a few words and say the rest out loud.
How to get better at journaling as a couple
- Answer separately, then share. Writing first stops one person's answer shaping the other's.
- Guess before you read. Predicting your partner's answer shows you where your Love Map needs updating.
- Keep it short. One prompt a week beats a marathon session that ends in an argument.
- Respond to what they share with curiosity, not correction. That's turning towards in practice.
- If a prompt opens up something painful you can't resolve together, consider a couples counsellor.

My advice for couples journaling
Start with the getting-to-know-you prompts, because they're fun and they show you straight away how much there is still to discover. Move on to appreciation, and keep the deeper prompts for when you both have time and energy. The real win isn't the notebook; it's the conversation it starts.
Frequently asked questions
What are journal prompts for couples?
Questions both partners answer separately and then share, to learn more about each other and talk about things you might not raise otherwise.
What is a Love Map?
The Gottman Institute's term for knowing the details of your partner's life, including their history, worries and dreams. It's the first level of its Sound Relationship House.
What does turning towards mean?
Responding to your partner's small bids for connection. The Gottman Institute says couples still married at a six-year follow-up turned towards bids 86% of the time.
How often should couples journal together?
Once a week is plenty. One prompt and a short conversation is better than a long session that becomes a chore.
Can a couples journal fix relationship problems?
It can help you talk, but it isn't therapy. For deep or repeated conflict, a qualified couples counsellor is the better route.
