Iterable Alternatives (2026): 9 Customer Engagement Platforms

The best replacement for an enterprise customer engagement platform depends on your team and your store. If you have data engineers and complex journeys, look at other enterprise cross-channel platforms. If you mainly sell online, ecommerce email and SMS tools are simpler to run, and lighter marketing automation covers many smaller programmes well.

Iterable describes itself as an AI customer engagement platform that helps brands respond to customer behaviour in real time, using unified data and optimisation. It's built for teams with serious data plumbing, and that's exactly why some of them start wondering whether they need all of it.

Here's a quick view first, then a closer look. The nine platforms are in no particular order, none of them is ranked or linked, and Iterable isn't a row, since this page is for people moving away from it.

Each platform in a sentence

ActiveCampaign

Best for: Marketing teams wanting email, SMS, WhatsApp and more run through what the vendor describes as an autonomous platform with a team of AI agents.

Attentive

Best for: Consumer brands that want text messaging at the centre of their programme, with email and AI features added around it.

Bloomreach

Best for: Retailers wanting email, web, mobile and on-site search personalised from one platform, driven by its Loomi AI.

Braze

Best for: Large consumer brands with data teams who want real-time, cross-channel customer engagement at a similar scale to the platform they're leaving.

Klaviyo

Best for: Ecommerce brands that want email and SMS marketing sold as a B2C CRM, with WhatsApp support and AI agents the vendor calls K:AI.

Mailmodo

Best for: Email marketers who want AMP emails readers can interact with, plus an AI builder for automated journeys.

Omnisend

Best for: Online shops after email marketing built for ecommerce rather than a general enterprise engagement suite.

Ortto

Best for: Growth teams who want a customer data platform and marketing automation joined up, with analytics in the same place.

Sendlane

Best for: Store owners wanting email, SMS, product reviews and sign-up forms in one platform instead of several separate apps.

Enterprise, ecommerce, text-first or all-round automation

Enterprise cross-channel. Braze is the nearest like-for-like move: a customer engagement platform for real-time, cross-channel messaging at large consumer brands. Bloomreach comes at it from commerce, with search and on-site personalisation sitting beside email in the same platform, driven by its own AI.

Built for online stores. Klaviyo frames itself as a B2C CRM for email and SMS, with WhatsApp and ecommerce support. Omnisend is email marketing made for ecommerce, and it's a lighter lift if you don't need an enterprise platform. Sendlane brings reviews and forms into the same tool as email and SMS, which cuts down the number of apps a store has to juggle.

Text messages first. Attentive puts SMS at the centre of the product and adds email around it. If your customers respond to texts far more than to emails, starting from an SMS-first tool can make more sense than bolting texts onto an email platform.

All-round marketing automation. ActiveCampaign covers email, SMS, WhatsApp and more, and now describes a team of AI agents running parts of the work. Ortto joins a customer data platform with messaging and analytics. Mailmodo is the odd one out, built around interactive AMP emails and an AI journey builder, so readers can act inside the email itself.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Count your audience the way each vendor bills it

Iterable suits teams that already have a data engineer and a lifecycle marketer. That means the hard part of leaving isn't the email templates. It's the event schema, the user profiles and the journeys that run on top of them. Templates can be rebuilt in an afternoon. A journey that depends on a dozen custom events can take weeks.

The other surprise is how differently these tools count what you pay for. Some bill by contacts, some by user profiles, some by messages sent and some by channel. The same audience can look small on one platform and large on another, depending on whether inactive profiles, SMS subscribers or anonymous visitors count towards the total.

So before you compare features, ask each vendor exactly what they count and how they treat profiles you're not actively messaging. Then rebuild one live journey in a trial, using your own events, and see how much of it carries over.

My advice for lifecycle teams moving off Iterable

Start with the people, not the platform. If you're keeping your data engineer and your journeys are complex, stay in the enterprise group and compare two tools there. If the team has shrunk, or you mainly sell online, an ecommerce tool will usually be easier to live with day to day, even if it does less.

Don't let a long feature list push you into another platform your team can't run. The tool you'll use well beats the tool that could do more. My guide to enterprise engagement alternatives goes deeper on the big cross-channel options, and my list of Customer.io alternatives covers event-driven messaging tools for product-led teams.

What to move across first

A clean migration happens in layers. Moving everything at once is how welcome emails go missing and abandoned-basket messages fire twice.

  1. Map your events and user attributes, and agree what each one will be called in the new tool.
  2. Move your consent and unsubscribe records before any message goes out.
  3. Rebuild your highest-value journey first, usually welcome or abandoned basket.
  4. Run it alongside the old journey on a small share of new users.
  5. Move the remaining journeys one at a time, then campaigns, then templates.
  6. Switch off the old platform only when every journey has run cleanly for a while.

Consent rules for email and SMS differ by country, so check the requirements with your regulator rather than assuming the new tool's defaults cover you.

Frequently asked questions

Why do companies look for Iterable alternatives?

Common reasons are wanting a simpler tool for a smaller team, a platform built for ecommerce, an SMS-first approach, or a different way of being billed for the same audience.

What's the closest like-for-like replacement for an enterprise engagement platform?

Another enterprise cross-channel platform that handles real-time events and journeys at scale. Ecommerce email tools are simpler but won't match the same depth of custom data.

How long does it take to migrate a customer engagement platform?

It depends on how many custom events and journeys you run. Templates move quickly. Event schemas, profiles and complex journeys take the longest, so plan for those first.

Should I choose an email tool or an SMS-first tool?

Look at where your customers respond. If texts drive most of your sales, start from an SMS-first tool. If email does the heavy lifting, an email platform with SMS added is often enough.

Can I keep my unsubscribe and consent records when I switch?

You should. Export them first and import them before sending anything, because consent rules apply to you whichever tool you use.
