Is Vinted Legit? Buyer Protection, Fees and the US (2026)

Vinted is a legit secondhand clothing app, headquartered in Lithuania, that runs mainly across Europe and the UK and is now expanding in the US. Sellers pay no selling fees, while buyers pay a Vinted fee that funds Buyer Protection. The catch is timing: you get just 2 calendar days to report a problem, and only Buy now purchases are covered.

Vinted is the app plenty of parents use to clear out outgrown kids' clothes, and plenty of bargain hunters use to find designer bits for less. It's also the subject of endless Vinted review threads where someone lost a parcel or a refund. I've gone through Vinted's refund policy and fee pages, plus recent press coverage of its US push, so you can weigh it up on what the company commits to in writing.

Where Vinted comes from and where it works

FashionUnited describes Vinted as headquartered in Lithuania. Lithuania's public broadcaster, LRT, reported that Vinted's 2024 management report put it in 23 markets, mainly in Europe, which is why it's such a familiar name in the UK, France and Germany.

For US readers, this is the bit that explains the confusion. FashionUnited reported that Vinted has operated in the US since 2013 with only a small user base, tested letting UK and US users buy from each other in late 2025, and has announced a major US expansion starting with New York. So if you're in the US and the app feels quieter than the hype suggests, that's because its home turf is Europe.

Why sellers like Vinted

The help centre says there are no selling fees on Vinted. The charge is paid by the buyer at checkout and is called the Vinted fee, which used to be known as the Buyer Protection fee. For a seller, that means the price you list is the price you receive for the item.

That's a big part of why it's a real way to make money from clothes you no longer wear. It isn't a business plan on its own, but for decluttering it's hard to beat. I've written a practical guide for small sellers on Vinted with listing and pricing habits, and a separate breakdown of how much Vinted takes if you want the fee detail by region.

Vinted Buyer Protection: what's covered

According to Vinted's refund policy, Buyer Protection applies to purchases made with the Buy now button from standard members. Orders from Pro sellers follow a different return policy, and payments made outside Vinted's system aren't covered at all.

If an order is confirmed as lost, damaged or not received, you get a full refund that includes the item price, the Vinted fee and the shipping fee. If the item is significantly not as described, the seller may offer a full or partial refund, or you may need to send it back. Buyers usually pay for return postage, unless the seller chooses to cover it, and the return must be sent within 5 business days of the return request.

The 2-day rule that decides Vinted refunds

This is the single most important thing to know. Vinted gives you 2 calendar days to report an issue once the refund window opens. If you don't report anything in time, or you confirm everything's fine, your payment goes to the seller and Vinted says it can no longer help with a refund.

  1. Open your parcel as soon as it arrives.
  2. If something's wrong, use the option to report an issue in your conversation with the seller.
  3. Add photos of the item, the inside and outside of the packaging, and any damage.
  4. Keep the packaging until Vinted resolves your request.

Don't confirm an order out of politeness before you've checked it. That confirmation is what releases the money.

Lost parcels work slightly differently. Vinted's policy says an investigation can only start once tracking shows the parcel seems to be lost, or once enough business days have passed since it was shipped. Keep an eye on tracking, and don't panic if a parcel is slow for a few days: the important thing is to act as soon as Vinted tells you the refund window has opened.

The most common Vinted problems

  • Paying outside the app. A seller who offers a discount for a bank transfer is asking you to give up Buyer Protection.
  • Pro sellers. Their orders use a different return policy, so read it before you buy.
  • Missed deadlines. Two calendar days goes quickly, especially over a weekend.
  • Return postage. On a not-as-described return, you may pay to send it back unless the seller covers it.

How to avoid Vinted scams as a buyer or seller

Most Vinted scams try to pull you out of the app. Buyers get messages asking them to pay by another method. Sellers get fake emails or texts saying a buyer has paid and asking them to click a link to receive the money. Vinted handles payments inside the app, so check every sale in your own Vinted account, not through a link someone sends you.

If you're selling, never post to an address you were given in a message rather than the one on the order, and don't ship before the sale shows in your app.

Is Vinted worth it?

For most people, yes. Vinted is an established company with written refund rules and no selling fees, which makes it one of the easiest ways to sell secondhand clothes in the UK and Europe. US users should expect a smaller community for now. Whichever side you're on, buy with Buy now, check parcels the day they arrive, and never move a deal outside the app.
