Upside is a real cash back app run by Upside Services, Inc. of Washington, DC, giving cash back on gas, groceries and restaurant purchases at participating stores. Its own terms and help pages cover small-balance cash-out fees, expiry after six months of inactivity and forfeiture if an account closes, so read those before you let a balance build up.
Upside is one of those apps people mention at the petrol pump, and it's a very different animal from a game that pays you to play. You aren't being rewarded for time, you're being rewarded for spending you were doing anyway. That makes it easier to judge, so I've gone through Upside's own terms and help centre to see where the small print bites.
Who is behind Upside
The terms name Upside Services, Inc., based in Washington, DC, as the operator. Registration is for individuals only, so sole proprietors, trustees and businesses can't sign up. That's worth knowing if you buy fuel for a company vehicle and hoped to claim on the business.
A named US company, published terms and a working help centre are all things you'd expect from a legitimate service. None of that says whether it will save you much, so keep reading.
What Upside gives back
The How It Works page says you open the app, choose an offer on gas, groceries or restaurants near you, claim it, make your purchase and then see cash back arrive. It says more than 100,000 stores nationwide fund the offers. In other words, the retailer or brand pays for the discount, not you.
I won't quote a typical saving, because Upside's own pages treat cash back as varying by offer and location, and a headline average hides a lot. The sensible habit is to look at the offer in the app, compare it with the price at the next station along, and only then decide.
Purchases that earn nothing
Upside's terms say you may only earn on purchases you personally made. They also list tobacco, alcohol, prescription medication, lottery tickets, cash back at purchase and service tips as ineligible. If your basket mixes eligible and ineligible items, expect the cash back to apply only to the qualifying part.
Cashing out Upside balances
This is where the details differ between the marketing and the help centre, so here's what each says.
- How it's described. The How It Works page says no minimum amount is required to cash out.
- Small amounts. The help centre says Upside applies a 1 US dollar fee for cashing out small amounts, and gives 1 US dollar for bank cash-outs under 10 US dollars, with fees waived at higher amounts.
- Gift cards. No fee, but the help centre says certain brands require a minimum, usually 10 US dollars.
- The terms. They say Upside may set a minimum redemption amount of up to 20 US dollars and deduct up to 1 US dollar for certain payment methods.
The practical conclusion is to let a balance build past the small-amount fee before you withdraw, and to check the current cash-out screen, because the app is the final word.
How long a withdrawal takes
The help centre says most requests are processed within 48 hours, but bank transfers tend to take 5-7 business days. So if you cash out on a Friday for a weekend plan, you may be disappointed.
What happened to PayPal on Upside
You may have read that it pays out via PayPal. The help centre says Upside dropped ongoing PayPal support for most accounts in late 2025, that you won't see the option unless you previously cashed out through PayPal, and that PayPal will be removed from all remaining accounts later in 2026. Bank account and gift card withdrawals remain available.

This is a good example of why older blog posts mislead. If a review tells you to choose PayPal, check whether that's still offered to you.
The clauses I'd read before using Upside
- Closing your account. The terms say it results in forfeiture of accumulated cash back rewards, subject to applicable law. Cash out first.
- Going quiet. Rewards expire if the account is inactive for six consecutive months.
- It isn't a bank. Balances earn no interest and aren't FDIC-insured.
- Age. Under 16s can't use it, and under 18s need a parent's or guardian's approval.
Is Upside worth having
Upside looks like a real, transparent service where the main risks are small: fees on tiny withdrawals, balances that can expire, and an app that nudges you toward spending. If you drive regularly and were going to buy fuel or food anyway, the offers can trim the bill. If it makes you spend more than you would otherwise, it's costing you money.
Never share card numbers or logins with anyone claiming to be Upside support who contacts you first, and be wary of social media posts promising big monthly payouts.

Where Upside fits with other ways to save
Cash back is a small lever, not an income.
