Is Uphold Legit? Licences, No FDIC Cover and Scam Warnings (2026)

Uphold is a real platform: its US entity, Uphold HQ Inc., is a FinCEN registered money services business licensed as a money transmitter in numerous states, according to its own disclosures. The catch is that digital asset balances aren't FDIC insured, transfers can't be reversed, and you can lose money.

Searches for 'is Uphold legit' usually come from someone about to move real money, which is exactly when a little checking pays off. I've read Uphold's own legal and disclosure pages and kept to what they say. This isn't investment advice, and I'm not commenting on prices or whether anyone should buy anything.

Who runs Uphold and what it says about itself

Uphold's about page says that since its launch in 2015, it has powered over 40 billion US dollars in transactions. That's the company's own claim, not an independent figure, but it tells you it has been operating for a good while rather than appearing from nowhere.

The same page identifies the US entity as Uphold HQ Inc., with an NMLS identification number and a registered office in Larkspur, California. NMLS is the public licensing database that US state regulators use, so you can look the entity up yourself rather than taking my word for it.

Uphold licences and registrations in the United States

Uphold's important disclosures describe Uphold HQ Inc. as a FinCEN registered money services business licensed as a money transmitter in numerous states. Its regulator page for US residents then lists state licences one by one, along with where to send complaints. That level of detail is a good sign, because a platform with nothing to show tends to hide it.

The page is also open about limits. It notes that its Tennessee licence doesn't cover the transmission of virtual currency, so a licence in one place doesn't automatically cover every product. This is why I'd always check the regulator page for your own state rather than assuming one blanket approval.

Is money on Uphold insured?

This is the single most important thing to understand. Uphold's disclosures say digital asset balances held with Uphold HQ Inc. aren't insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and aren't covered by SIPC or any other government agency. In plain English, if something goes wrong, you shouldn't assume a government scheme will make you whole.

Uphold is a platform you use to buy, hold and move assets, not a bank account. The disclosures also state that securities offered through Uphold Securities Inc. are held in custody by Apex Clearing Corporation, which shows that different products sit with different companies behind the scenes. If you care about who holds what, read those pages slowly.

Security claims and what they do and don't mean

On its home page, Uphold says it holds SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 and PCI DSS certifications, and states that it never loans out customer assets. Those are Uphold's statements, and I haven't seen the audit reports, so I'd read them as 'this is what the company says it has done', not as a promise that nothing can go wrong.

A certification covers how a company handles security processes. It can't protect you from your own mistakes, like sharing a login or sending funds to the wrong address. If you're deciding where to keep assets long term, my explainer on hot wallets versus cold wallets covers the trade-offs between convenience and control.

The risks of using Uphold

Being legit doesn't remove risk. Uphold's own disclosures warn that there is always the potential of losing money when you invest in securities, digital assets or other financial products. Its regulator page adds that the transfer of digital financial assets is irrevocable, and that it isn't liable for losses from unauthorised, mistaken or accidental transactions unless the law says otherwise.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • A wrong address or a transfer you were tricked into sending can't be pulled back.
  • Asset values can fall and you can lose part or all of what you put in.
  • Not every product is available in every place; the entity offering a service depends on where you live.
  • Fees apply, so read the service fees page for what each action costs.

If you're still weighing up where to hold assets, my overview of crypto apps, exchanges and wallets explains how the different types work, without telling you which to buy.

Fake Uphold support and copycat scams

Crypto brands are copied constantly. The pattern is familiar: a stranger messages you on social media or a messaging app, claims to be Uphold support, and asks you to move funds to a 'safe wallet' or share a code. The US Federal Trade Commission warns that scammers often ask for payment in ways that are hard to reverse, such as crypto and gift cards.

  • Only use the official Uphold website or the official app, typing the address yourself.
  • Never share a recovery phrase, password or one-time code with anyone.
  • Treat any message that creates panic or a deadline as a warning sign.
  • Use the support centre linked from Uphold's own site, not a number in a comment.
  • Complaints in the US can go to Uphold first and then to your state regulator or the CFPB, as its regulator page explains.

My verdict on Uphold

It looks like a real, registered platform with a named US entity and detailed licence disclosures, so I wouldn't call it a scam. But legit isn't the same as risk-free. Balances aren't FDIC insured, transfers are final and values can drop. Read the disclosures for your state, start with an amount you could afford to lose, and keep a close eye on anyone who contacts you first.
