Is Swappa Legit? Selling and Buying Used Phones Safely (2026)

Yes, Swappa is a legit selling site for used phones, laptops and other tech, launched in 2010 by founder Ben Edwards. Real moderators check each listing, including the device's IMEI and a verification photo, before it goes live. The catch is that payment goes straight from buyer to seller, so your safety net is PayPal's protection and Swappa's returns rules, not a warehouse inspection.

Swappa is the name that comes up when someone wants to sell an old phone for more than a trade-in offer, or buy one without the risk of a random classified ad. I've read through Swappa's About, fees, verification, shipping and returns pages to see what the company commits to, and where the responsibility sits with you. It's a decent setup, but it works differently from a shop.

Who started Swappa and what you can buy there

According to its About page, Swappa was founded by Ben Edwards, who's still listed as Founder and CEO, and that it launched in 2010. It started with a single Motorola Droid sale and, according to the same page, has grown into a platform that's handled hundreds of millions of dollars in used tech.

It's focused on gadgets: phones first, but also tablets, laptops, smartwatches, game consoles and similar kit. That narrow focus is part of why it feels safer than a general classified app, because the rules are written specifically for electronics.

How Swappa vets a phone before it's listed

This is what makes Swappa different. Its verification page says devices have to be clear and ready for activation, and it sets out what that means:

  • A clean IMEI or ESN. The number must be present and verified, it can't be blocklisted, and altered or repaired IMEIs aren't allowed.
  • No locks. Devices must be fully reset and free of Apple iCloud, Google Factory Reset Protection, and remote or device management locks.
  • A verification photo. The seller photographs the item with a unique code from Swappa, which proves they have the device in hand.
  • Human review. Swappa says real moderators approve listings before they go live, checking photos, serial numbers and seller history.
  • Lost or stolen checks. Swappa says it uses global services to check whether a device has been reported lost, stolen or fraudulent.

Some users are also asked to complete Stripe Identity verification, which checks a government ID, and they get a green check badge on their profile. None of this means Swappa holds the phone and tests it, but it filters out the most common problems with used handsets before you ever see the listing.

Swappa's fees for buyers and sellers

The fees page keeps things simple, and it's one of the platform's selling points:

Swappa chargeWhat Swappa's fees page says
ListingAlways free
Seller fee3% of the sold price
Buyer fee3% added to the listing price
Payment feesSeparate: PayPal at 3.49% plus 49 cents, or Stripe at 2.9% plus 30 cents

Sellers should build shipping into their price, because Swappa's shipping guide says the cost sits inside the listing price rather than being charged on top. If you're comparing places to sell an old phone, my guide to what eBay takes from each sale shows how the two compare on fees alone.

Getting paid and shipping on Swappa

The About page says payments go directly from buyer to seller. There's no holding account in the middle, so the money lands with you through the payment service once the buyer pays. That's quick, but it also means the shipping rules carry a lot of weight.

  1. Ship within 2 business days of receiving payment, which is the deadline in Swappa's shipping guide.
  2. Send it only to the address attached to the buyer's PayPal payment. Swappa warns that shipping anywhere else, even if the buyer asks, voids PayPal's seller protection.
  3. Add the tracking number to the private sale page so there's proof of delivery.
  4. Insure the parcel for its full value, as the guide recommends.

Is selling on Swappa a way to make some money? It can be a good way to get more for tech you're done with. Just don't treat it as a business plan without thinking it through first, and my piece on where to start with a side hustle is a sensible place to begin if you're tempted to buy and flip phones. Regular reselling can also have tax consequences, so check with an accountant.

Returns and refunds when a Swappa sale goes wrong

The Returns and Refunds policy splits problems into two kinds. If the item isn't as advertised, sellers are required to accept a return. If you simply change your mind, the seller doesn't have to take it back, unless their listing said they accept returns before you bought.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Returns go to the seller, not to Swappa. You start by commenting on the private sale page, add the return tracking number, and the seller refunds once it arrives. Swappa says its own sale fee is refunded when the seller issues a refund through PayPal. If a seller won't cooperate on a real not-as-described problem, the PayPal side of the transaction gives you another route, and Swappa's support can guide you on when to use it.

The trade-offs of using Swappa

  • You're buying from a person. Moderators check listings, but nobody at Swappa opens the box before it reaches you.
  • Change-of-mind returns are up to the seller. Read the listing for a returns note before you buy.
  • Fees on both sides. Each party pays 3%, and payment processing comes on top.
  • Seller rules are strict. Late shipping or the wrong address can leave you without protection.

Swappa scams that happen off the platform

Most problems start when someone tries to pull the deal away from Swappa's checkout. A buyer might ask to pay by a different app to dodge the fee, or ask you to ship to a new address. A seller might suggest a cheaper price if you pay directly. Both moves strip away the protection that comes from paying through Swappa.

Also be careful with messages pretending to be Swappa support that ask for your login, a payment, or a device's passcode. Keep every conversation on the private sale page, and open Swappa yourself rather than tapping links in texts.

My verdict on Swappa

It's legit and well suited to used tech. Its listing checks, which include IMEI verification, lock checks, a unique-code photo and human moderation, cut out a lot of the classic used-phone headaches. Buyers do best when they read the condition notes and pay through checkout. Sellers do best when they ship fast, to the right address, with tracking. Do that and it's one of the more sensible ways to buy or sell a second-hand phone.
