Is SSENSE Legit? Returns, Duties and the 2025 News (2026)

SSENSE is a real Montreal retailer of designer fashion and streetwear, founded in 2003 and shipping to over 40 countries with duties included, according to its own FAQ. Its return policy gives you 30 calendar days from delivery. The catch to know about is that Wikipedia reports SSENSE entered creditor protection in 2025, so check its current status before a big order.

SSENSE has the polished look of a boutique, and that can make people wonder whether it's the real thing or a clever imitation. It is the real thing as far as I can tell, but there's a big piece of recent news you should know about before you spend serious money. I've gone through SSENSE's own FAQ and return policy, plus Wikipedia, and set out what each says.

Who is behind SSENSE

According to Wikipedia, SSENSE was founded in 2003 by brothers Rami, Bassel and Firas Atallah, and is headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It describes the business as a multi-brand retailer of designer fashion and high-end streetwear, delivering to 114 countries, with sites in Chinese, French, English, Japanese and Korean. SSENSE's own FAQ gives a narrower number: it says it ships to over 40 countries with duties and taxes included.

Those two figures don't match, and I can't tell you which is the more current one. My advice is to select your country at the bottom of the SSENSE site and see what it offers you directly.

The 2025 creditor protection news

This is the part I wouldn't skip. Wikipedia says that in 2025 SSENSE filed for bankruptcy protection with 371 million Canadian dollars of debt, including over 93 million owed to vendors, and entered creditor protection under Canada's Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act. The company blamed increased US tariffs on imports, and put itself up for sale.

That doesn't mean SSENSE isn't legit. It's a business that has been through a restructuring. What I couldn't confirm is the outcome, who owns it now, or whether policies have changed since. Before placing a large order, check SSENSE's current site and customer service pages, and use a payment method that gives you dispute rights, as I explain in my guide to whether Etsy is legit. If you like comparing luxury sellers, my page on how Fashionphile handles authenticity and returns is a useful contrast.

SSENSE returns: the 30-day rule

SSENSE's return policy says a return must be requested within 30 calendar days of the delivery date. The return starts with a Return Authorization request through your SSENSE account. The FAQ also says SSENSE doesn't process direct exchanges: you return the item for a full refund and place a new order.

  • Items must be in original condition, with original packaging included and intact.
  • Any SSENSE security tag must stay on, and the policy says it can't be altered, damaged or removed.
  • Final sale items and shipping fees aren't eligible for return or refund.
  • Worn intimate apparel or swimwear, opened self-care items and some other categories are excluded.
  • Returns that fail SSENSE's quality check can be refused.

Who pays for SSENSE returns and how long refunds take

SSENSE's return policy says customers in Canada, the United States and Japan receive free shipping for returns. In some other places, you get a prepaid return label and a per-package fee is deducted from your refund. Other international customers pay for their own return shipping. The exact amounts are set out on SSENSE's page, so look up your own country there.

On timing, the policy says refunds go back to the original payment method and take up to 5 business days to process, and your bank may take longer to show it. If you're ordering something for an event with a deadline, allow for the return process too, not just delivery.

SSENSE duties and taxes at checkout

SSENSE's FAQ says all products shipped to the United States are sold on a Delivered Duty Paid basis, so the order arrives fully cleared, with no extra duties or taxes to pay on delivery. For other destinations, it says some orders are Delivered Duty Paid and some are not, and on the latter you may owe fees on delivery. That is the detail to check at checkout, because a surprise charge at the door is the classic complaint about overseas fashion orders.

Spotting fake SSENSE sites and messages

  • Type the address yourself rather than clicking an advert or a message.
  • Treat designer pieces at impossible prices on look-alike sites with suspicion.
  • Never pay anyone claiming to be SSENSE by bank transfer, gift card or payment app.
  • Check any order or return message by logging in to your own account.
  • Tell your card provider quickly if something looks wrong.

Is SSENSE worth using?

SSENSE is a real retailer with clear written return rules and a clear stance on duties. The new element is its 2025 restructuring. If you shop there, read the current return policy for your country, keep the tags and packaging intact, and pay by a method with dispute rights. For a first purchase, I'd lean towards something modest rather than a big-ticket piece, simply because you'll learn how smooth the process is without much at stake.
