Is Poshmark Legit? Posh Protect and Payouts Explained (2026)

Poshmark is a legit resale app for fashion and home goods, owned since 2023 by the South Korean tech company Naver. Its Posh Protect policy refunds you if an item never ships or doesn't match the listing. The catch is a tight 72-hour window after delivery to report a problem, and anything bought off the app isn't covered.

Poshmark has a loyal crowd of sellers who share each other's listings and chat in the comments, which gives it a friendlier feel than most resale apps. Friendly isn't the same as protected, though. I've gone through Posh Protect, Poshmark's help pages on getting paid, and its owner's announcements, so you know what the app promises to buyers and sellers in its own words.

Who owns Poshmark today

Poshmark used to be listed on the NASDAQ. Naver Corp., the South Korean internet group, announced on 6 January that it had completed its purchase of Poshmark, Inc., and the deal took the company off the stock market in 2023.

Naver's announcement said Poshmark would keep its brand, its employees, its community and its headquarters in Redwood City, California. In practice, the app you open looks and works the way it did before, with a large tech group behind it.

Posh Protect for buyers, in plain English

Posh Protect is Poshmark's buyer guarantee. The policy says you'll get a full refund if your item never ships or doesn't match the listing description. It lists the situations that count: damage the seller didn't mention, an incorrect or missing item, something not as described, and items that aren't authentic.

Everything else, in Poshmark's words, is a final sale. That means an item that doesn't fit, or one you've simply gone off, isn't covered. If sizing matters, ask the seller for measurements in the comments before you buy.

Why the 72-hour window on Poshmark matters

Once tracking shows your parcel has been delivered, you have 72 hours to open a return case in the app or on the website, with photos. If Poshmark approves the return, you need to ship it back within 5 days.

Here's the detail many buyers miss. Poshmark releases the payment to the seller as soon as you confirm the order is fine, or automatically if you don't open a return case within 3 days of delivery. After that point, the sale is final under Posh Protect. So don't tap to confirm the order before you've unpacked and checked the item.

  1. Check tracking so you know the day it lands.
  2. Unpack it on camera or take photos straight away, including the packaging.
  3. Compare it with the listing photos and description.
  4. Open a return case within 72 hours if anything's wrong, or confirm the order if it's all good.

Getting paid as a Poshmark seller

The same timing protects sellers. Once the buyer confirms the order, or the 3-day window passes, your earnings are released and the sale is final. From there, Poshmark's help centre lists several ways to cash out: direct deposit to your bank, Instant Transfer to a debit card, PayPal, Venmo or a cheque.

Direct deposit has no charge, according to Poshmark's help pages, and normally takes 2 to 3 business days, not counting weekends and holidays. The name on your bank account needs to match your Poshmark details, or the transfer can be delayed or blocked. I've covered Poshmark's commission on each sale in this explainer on what Poshmark takes when you sell, so check that before pricing.

Is Poshmark a real way to make money? It's a real way to turn wardrobe clear-outs into cash, and some people run full reselling businesses on it. Results depend on what you sell, how you photograph it and how active you stay in the community, so treat early sales as a test rather than a forecast.

Where Poshmark users get caught out

  • Off-app deals. Posh Protect doesn't cover trades or transactions made off the platform. A seller who suggests paying them directly is asking you to give up your refund rights.
  • Confirming too early. Confirming the order releases the money and ends your chance to open a return case.
  • Bought the wrong size. Fit isn't a valid reason for a return, so ask questions first.
  • Name mismatch on payouts. A different name on your bank account can hold up direct deposit.

How to spot fake Poshmark messages

Scammers like Poshmark because its users comment and message a lot. Common tricks include a buyer who asks for your email or phone number to pay you directly, fake emails claiming a sale needs verifying through a link, and sellers who move the chat to another app. Keep every conversation and payment inside Poshmark, and check orders in the app itself rather than through links.

Sellers get targeted too. Watch for buyers who claim they've paid but need you to ship to a different address, or who ask you to mark an order as complete outside the normal flow. Posh Protect's timings run from the delivery shown on the order's tracking, so shipping somewhere else, or skipping the app's process, leaves you with no record to point to if something goes wrong.

If you sell in several places, it helps to compare how each app pays and protects you. Depop's selling costs are a useful comparison for clothing sellers.

Should you use Poshmark?

I'd say yes, with your eyes open. Poshmark is owned by a major tech company, its Posh Protect rules are written down, and sellers get several ways to cash out. Buyers just need to move quickly once a parcel arrives, and everyone should keep payments inside the app.
