Phantom is a real crypto wallet run by Phantom Technologies, Inc., founded in 2021 in San Francisco. It's self-custodial, so only you hold your funds, and its terms say transactions are final with no refunds. Anyone who gets your Secret Recovery Phrase can access your funds, and Phantom says it will never ask for it.
When people ask me whether Phantom wallet is safe or legit, they usually mean two different things: is the company real, and will my money be okay if I use it. The first is easy to answer from public sources. The second depends heavily on what you do, because a self-custody wallet puts the responsibility in your hands. I'm not giving investment advice here, just what Phantom's own pages and the press say.
Who runs Phantom wallet
Phantom's terms name the operator as Phantom Technologies, Inc., which they describe as a blockchain development company. Cointelegraph reported on 17 January that the company was founded in 2021 in San Francisco and had raised a Series C round led by Sequoia Capital and Paradigm.
A funded company with named investors isn't a promise that your money is protected. It does suggest a business with something to lose, which separates it from a copycat app that appears for a week and vanishes.
Phantom is self-custody, not an exchange
Phantom's guide says: "Phantom is a self-custodial wallet, meaning only you have access to your funds." Its terms go further and say Phantom is not a custodian of your wallet or the digital assets held in it.
An exchange such as Coinbase or Kraken holds assets for you and can usually help you get back into an account. A wallet like this works differently. There's no account to reset, because the keys sit with you. My explainer on hot wallets versus cold wallets shows where this sort of app fits in the storage picture.
Your Secret Recovery Phrase and why it matters most
Phantom's guide says the Secret Recovery Phrase is the only way to restore your wallet on a new device, that anyone who has it can access your funds, and that you should store it somewhere safe and offline. It also says: "Phantom will never ask you for your recovery phrase."
- Write the phrase down and keep it offline, not in a screenshot or a notes app.
- Never type it into a website, a chat window or a form that someone sends you.
- Treat any request for it as a red flag, whoever says they're asking.
- Phantom's terms say your Authentication Method is the only way to restore access, and that Phantom doesn't store it.
In short, if you lose it, nobody at Phantom can rescue you. If somebody else gets it, nobody can lock them out.
Fees, final transactions and what Phantom can't undo
Phantom's terms say some functionality, including token swaps, carries fees that may change at any time, and that blockchain transactions may need network fees. They also say transactions are irreversible and final, with no refunds.
The terms add that Phantom can't freeze, cancel or modify a transaction made through third-party functionality, and that your dealings with those third parties are between you and them. So if you send funds to the wrong address or approve something you shouldn't, there's no refund desk. Slow down before you confirm.
| What I checked | What Phantom's own pages say |
|---|---|
| Who operates it | Phantom Technologies, Inc. |
| Who holds the funds | You do; Phantom is not a custodian |
| Recovery | Only your Secret Recovery Phrase restores the wallet |
| Refunds | Transactions are final, with no refunds |
| Support asking for your phrase | Phantom says it never will |
| Eligibility | Age of majority where you live, no sanctions, some countries restricted |
Safety features Phantom lists
Phantom's homepage lists scam detection that flags malicious transactions, round-the-clock support and Ledger hardware wallet integration. Its help centre also has a Security section covering scams, phishing and hacks, plus an article for people who were scammed or had a wallet drained, and a Contact Phantom Support article.
Treat those as helpful tools, not a shield. A warning only works if you read it before you tap approve. Phantom's pages don't promise that every scam will be caught, and I wouldn't assume that.

Fake Phantom apps, fake support and wallet scams
The biggest threat to a wallet user is somebody pretending to be the company. Typical tricks include a fake app or browser extension with a similar name, a pop-up saying your wallet is 'out of sync' and needs your phrase, and a stranger on social media offering 'support' in a private message.
- Open Phantom from its official site rather than from a link in a message or advert.
- Ignore anyone, including a person claiming to be staff, who asks for your Secret Recovery Phrase.
- Don't call numbers you find on third-party sites; use the Contact Phantom Support article in the official help centre.
- Read what a transaction does before you approve it, especially unexpected ones.
- Consider a hardware wallet for larger amounts, which Phantom's homepage says it integrates with.

Which chains and who can use it
Cointelegraph reported that Phantom supported Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana, with Sui announced as the fourth chain on 6 December. That's a snapshot from a 2025 report and the list may have grown, so check the official site. On eligibility, Phantom's terms say you must be of the age of majority where you live, not be subject to applicable sanctions, and that some countries are restricted.
So, is Phantom wallet safe?
It's a real product from an identifiable company that describes itself plainly as self-custody. Whether it's safe for you depends on your habits: guard the phrase, check each approval and download only from official sources. I haven't found a regulator action in the sources I checked, but I wouldn't read that as a guarantee either. Crypto carries risk, including losing everything you put in.
