Yes, Kahoot is free to use. Kahoot's help centre says joining and playing is always free for participants, and a free account lets you create kahoots with basic quiz types and host them live or as self-paced challenges.
Kahoot is the game-based quiz tool you've probably seen in classrooms, training sessions and team meetings. Players join on their phones with a game PIN. The free version covers creating and hosting quizzes, but some question types and large audiences sit behind a plan, and business accounts have a much tighter free limit than students do. Here's what you can do for free.
What a free Kahoot account includes
Kahoot lists these free features:
- Discover public kahoots and play them straight away. Kahoot says over 30 million public kahoots have been created by its team, partners and community.
- Join live games hosted by other people.
- Create new kahoots using basic quiz types and the free image library.
- Host games live in class or online.
- Assign kahoots as challenges for self-paced learning, shared by PIN or link.
- Use study modes such as Flashcards, Learn and Challenges in the Kahoot app.
Kahoot also confirms you can host more than one free game a day. You can restart a quiz for the next group during the same day.
Do players need an account?
No. Kahoot says participants go to kahoot.it or open the app, enter the game PIN, pick a nickname and join, with no account required. That's a big part of why it works for workshops: nobody has to sign up before the first question.
What needs a Kahoot plan
Kahoot's help centre names three things that aren't included in free accounts:
| Feature | Free account | Kahoot plans |
|---|---|---|
| Join and play games | Yes | Yes |
| Create kahoots with basic quiz types | Yes | Yes |
| Host live or assign as a challenge | Yes | Yes |
| Premium question types | No | Yes |
| Advanced reporting | No | Yes |
| Very large participant sessions | No | Yes |
If Kahoot asks you to upgrade when you save, Kahoot says you've probably added a feature that isn't in the free version. Switch back to standard quiz options and save again.
The catch for business accounts
This is the detail to check before a work session. Kahoot's participant limits article says the games from the Discover page and from the Free Resources channel allow free business users to host games for up to 3 participants. A student or personal account works differently from a free business account, so pick the right account type when you sign up.
If you're running a team meeting or a client workshop, test your setup before the day. Finding out about a 3 player limit with a room full of people is no fun.
Free trials of Kahoot plans
Kahoot says free trials are only available on certain plans, where you'll see a Start free trial button, and its regular trial lasts 7 days unless the offer says otherwise. It also warns that if you've had a trial before, you can't start another, and trying to may start the plan itself. Check your account history before you click.
How to host your first free kahoot
- Sign up at kahoot.com and choose the right account type, such as student, teacher, personal or professional.
- Click Create, then New kahoot, and add a title, description and questions.
- Stick to the free question types and images from the free library.
- Save, click Host, and choose live or a self-paced challenge.
- Share the game PIN or challenge link with your players.

Finding free ready-made kahoots
You don't have to build every quiz yourself. Kahoot says over 30 million public kahoots have been created by its team, partners and the community, and you can search them from the Discover page after logging in. Its help centre explains how to filter and sort results and how to tell free content from content that needs a plan, so check the label before you plan a session around one.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Kahoot also notes that child accounts have search limitations, and that age-based privacy restrictions apply to young students, under 13 in the US and under 16 outside the US. If you teach younger children, read Kahoot's privacy notice for students before you set up accounts.
Playing Kahoot over video calls
Kahoot calls remote play connected Kahoot!ing. You host a live game and share your screen in a video call, and players join on their own devices with the PIN. Kahoot says you'll need a webcam, a video conferencing tool with screen sharing, such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom, and the ability to share your screen. That works on a free account too.
My verdict: Kahoot is free for players and for creating and hosting quizzes with the standard question types, which covers a typical classroom quiz or training session. Choose your account type carefully, because free business accounts hit a 3 player limit on Discover games, and only look at a plan when you need premium questions, reports or a big audience.
