Yes, Handshake AI is run by Handshake, the student and graduate jobs company launched in 2014. It lets people with degrees and specialist knowledge do remote AI training tasks as independent contractors, and pays through Stripe. The catch is that you need strong qualifications, projects come and go, and onboarding is unpaid unless a project says otherwise.
Handshake AI keeps landing in my reader messages, usually from people who got an invite and want to know whether it's worth their time. It's a fair question, because AI training work is full of look-alike offers. Here's what Handshake's own help pages say, and where I'd stay careful.
Who is behind Handshake AI
Handshake AI isn't a stranger's start-up. It sits inside Handshake, which Wikipedia says was launched in 2014 by three computer science students from Michigan Tech and is headquartered in San Francisco. For years Handshake has been best known as a job board that connects college students with employers.
The AI side applies that network to a new job: people with degrees and subject knowledge help train and check AI models. Handshake's own page calls it paid, remote work training and improving AI models. That backing is a good sign, but a real company can still run projects that suit some people and not others.
What the work on Handshake AI looks like
According to Handshake's Fellowship FAQ, Fellows write prompts in their field, evaluate or compare AI-written answers, and correct content so it's accurate and well sourced. It's part-time, remote and asynchronous, so you do it around your own life.
Handshake says the usual route is to verify your identity, get matched to a project, complete training, do the work, then get paid. Listings on its public page range from software engineering to philosophy to finance, which tells you the pitch is expertise rather than click-and-go microtasks.
How Handshake AI sets pay
The FAQ puts hourly rates at 30 to 125 US dollars an hour, depending on your education level, expertise and the project. Handshake says the rate is shown before you accept a project. That's useful, because you can judge a project before you give it any time.
Not every project is hourly. Handshake's Help Center says most pay either an hourly rate or a per-task rate, set out in the Project Terms. On hourly work, the pay covers preparing, submitting and revising tasks. Some tasks carry a maximum handling time, and payment stops at that limit even if you take longer.
The same page says you must still complete and successfully submit a task to be paid for it. So read the Project Terms like a contract, because that's what they are.
How and when Handshake AI pays you
Handshake's help pages say payouts run through Stripe, and you set up your payout details after finishing your first task. Handshake says it typically sends payouts to its partner pay platforms weekly, covering the Monday to Sunday of the previous week, by Wednesday afternoon.
After that, it can often take 48 hours to process, and Handshake says funds should land in your bank account within 3 days, depending on your bank. One of those help articles is older than the rest, and some projects use a different schedule, so check the Project Terms for the one you're on.

The catch with Handshake AI
This is where I'd slow down before you get excited by the top of the range.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- It's contract work. Handshake says Fellows are hired as 1099 independent contractors. That means no employee benefits, and you're responsible for your own tax.
- Unpaid time exists. Handshake says onboarding is unpaid unless the Project Terms say otherwise, and optional meetings, time on community platforms such as Slack, and time lost to technical issues aren't paid either.
- Work isn't promised. Being accepted means you can be matched to projects. It doesn't mean there will always be one for your subject.
- The top rate isn't the usual rate. The 125 figure is the ceiling of a range that depends on your level and the project.

Spotting fake Handshake AI offers
Because the pay sounds good, scammers copy it. Handshake's own fraud guidance says it and its partners will never ask for sensitive information by text, in-app message, email, call, social media or WhatsApp. Sensitive details only go through Persona, for identity checks, and Stripe, for payments and taxes.
It lists look-alike web addresses and generic Gmail addresses as red flags, along with anyone asking you to move off Handshake to apply or hand over personal information. It also warns about urgency, because scammers want you to act before you think. If something feels off, stop and contact Handshake support before you enter anything.
Is Handshake AI worth your time
My view is that it can be, if you have real graduate-level knowledge in a subject AI labs need and you treat it as flexible side income rather than a salary. If you're still comparing options, my guide to remote jobs that pay well shows what else is out there, and my breakdown of Prolific's pay rules covers a research platform with a very different, lighter-touch model.
