Is Gotogate Legit? Service Fees, Refunds and Changes (2026)

Gotogate is a real flight booking site that, in its own travel conditions, says it only acts as an intermediary: the airline is your contractual partner, and refunds follow the airline's rules. The catch is the extra service fees for changes and cancellations, which its terms list per passenger. Read those and the airline's fare rules before you pay.

Cheap fares from a name you haven't heard of make me want to find out who is really on the other end. Gotogate comes up a lot, so I've read its own travel conditions and what Wikipedia says about the group behind it. The short version is that it's a real business with a very clear statement about what it does and doesn't do, and that statement is the thing to understand before you book.

Who runs Gotogate and who owns the group

Gotogate's travel conditions name the operator as Gotogate, Inc., based in Miami, Florida. Wikipedia's article on Etraveli Group says Etraveli is a Swedish travel technology company headquartered in Stockholm, formed in 2007 from Seat24 and SRG Online, and lists Gotogate, Mytrip and Flightnetwork among its online travel agencies, with CVC Capital Partners listed as an owner. I wasn't able to confirm which company contracts with customers in every country, so check the name on your own booking confirmation.

Gotogate's role: an intermediary, not an airline

This is the line that matters most. Gotogate's travel conditions say it exclusively provides travel mediation services and only acts as an intermediary. It also says it isn't a co-vendor of the travel services. The airline, it says, is your contractual partner for providing the flight, and the airline sets the conditions for changes and refunds, over which Gotogate has no influence.

That's honest, and it's a fair description of how any booking agent works. It also means Gotogate can't promise you what the airline won't allow. A cheap fare with strict rules stays strict, whoever sold it.

Gotogate service fees for changes, cancellations and refunds

Gotogate's travel conditions include a list of service fees, with VAT included. The ones that matter if your plans change are:

  • 17 US dollars per passenger for finding an alternative flight after an airline timetable change or cancellation.
  • 45 US dollars per passenger for changes or cancellations you request, or for manual help such as adding passengers.
  • 73 US dollars per passenger for refund inquiries made after the original departure date for a no-show.

Those are the terms' own figures, and they could change, so check the current conditions on the site. The practical point is that a change that costs little at the airline can still carry a fee on top, per person. For a family of four, that adds up quickly.

How refunds work on Gotogate bookings

According to the travel conditions, refunds follow the service provider's terms and applicable federal law, and go back to your original payment method. They also say the refunded amount may not cover the full booking price, and that Gotogate will only process a payment refund where it has already received the money from the service provider. So there's a chain: the airline refunds Gotogate, and then Gotogate refunds you.

If an airline cancels, the first thing I'd do is write down the dates and keep the emails. If you feel you're being passed around, the US Department of Transportation publishes its own rules on refunds for cancelled flights, which are worth reading.

Changing a Gotogate flight booking

The conditions say Gotogate can handle change requests for a fee, but only if the airline permits changes. Requests must generally reach Gotogate at least 24 hours before travel begins, and if the change results in a more expensive ticket you pay the difference. The safest habit is to ask early, because late requests have less room.

The Gotogate Cancellation Guarantee

Gotogate also offers an optional Cancellation Guarantee. Its conditions describe it as letting you cancel for a voucher for a new booking on its site, with requests received no later than 24 hours before the original departure. It's a voucher, not a refund to your card, so decide whether you'd really book with the site again. Add-ons like this are optional, so untick anything you didn't choose to buy.

How to check a Gotogate booking before you pay

  1. Look at the final total on the payment page, not the fare in the results.
  2. Compare it with the airline's own site for the same flights.
  3. Check the airline's fare rules for changes and refunds.
  4. Untick optional extras you don't want.
  5. Save the confirmation email and the airline's booking reference.

Avoiding fake Gotogate emails and phone numbers

Use the contact details in your confirmation email or your account, not a number from an advert or search result. Don't give card details to a caller you didn't contact, and be careful with refund emails that ask you to click. If someone is pressuring or threatening you, report it to the platform and, if you're in danger, contact the police.

Is Gotogate worth using?

Gotogate is a real booking site and says clearly what it does. If you book, you're buying a ticket through an agent, so the airline's rules and Gotogate's service fees both apply. A lower fare is only a real saving once you've added any fees you might need. Read the conditions, compare the final total with the airline, and keep every message.
