Is Dermstore Legit? Owner, Returns Rules and Shipping (2026)

Yes, Dermstore is a real beauty retailer: it was founded in 1999 and, according to Wikipedia, was bought from Target by THG. The catch is the returns rule. Dermstore says items must come back unopened and unused with seals intact, and it doesn't offer exchanges, so you can't return a product you've tried.

Skincare is personal, and nobody wants a counterfeit serum on their face. So when people ask whether Dermstore is legit, I look at who owns it, what it says about its products and what happens if you need to send something back. Here's what its own pages and Wikipedia say.

Who owns Dermstore

The About Us page says it was founded in 1999 by a dermatologist and is backed by its Medical Advisory Board. Wikipedia names the founder as dermatologist Craig Kraffert and says the company is headquartered in El Segundo, California.

According to Wikipedia, THG plc bought Dermstore from Target Corporation, and the deal closed in 2021. Dermstore's website footer gives the legal entity as The Hut.com Ltd trading as Dermstore.com. So there's a long-running US beauty retailer behind the name, now sitting inside a UK-listed group.

What Dermstore sells and how it describes it

Dermstore's About Us page describes offering exclusive access to professional-strength, hard-to-find skin, hair and beauty products trusted by experts. It lists brands such as CeraVe, La Roche-Posay, EltaMD, SkinCeuticals and Murad.

I didn't find the word authentic on that page, so I won't claim Dermstore makes a specific authenticity promise. What it does say is that it works with named brands and publishes expert guidance. If a product matters to you, check the batch details on the box when it arrives and contact customer service if anything looks off.

How Dermstore returns work

This is where Dermstore differs from a clothes shop, and it's worth reading before you order. The returns page gives 60 days from the date of receiving your item to start a return. But the condition rule is strict.

  • Items must be in pristine condition: unopened, unused, with seals intact.
  • Dermstore says it doesn't offer exchanges. You place a new order and return the original for a refund.
  • Returns are registered through the ZigZag return portal, where you choose a carrier.
  • Damaged, faulty or incorrect items are handled case by case through My Account, and Dermstore asks for photo or video evidence.

The page doesn't say who pays for return postage, so check at the point of return rather than assuming. In practice, if you open a moisturiser and your skin reacts badly, the standard returns route is closed, which is why a patch test and a read of the ingredients before opening matter.

Refund timing

Dermstore says refunds are expected 3-5 working days from when it receives your return, and you get an email notification. If no refund arrives 10 working days after that email, its page tells you to contact customer service through your account.

I'd keep your return tracking number and a photo of the parcel until the money lands. It costs nothing and saves arguments.

Shipping: where Dermstore delivers

Dermstore's delivery page says US standard shipping is free on orders over 50 US dollars, with standard delivery in 3-5 working days. It says it ships within the US and to Canada and no longer ships packages outside the US and Canada.

That matters if you're reading this from the UK or elsewhere. A site that claims to be Dermstore and happily ships worldwide, or asks you to pay a customs fee by bank transfer, doesn't match Dermstore's own description. Dermstore also says pressurized or flammable items, including most fragrances, must ship via Standard Ground, and refused packages incur a 15 US dollar non-delivery fee.

What I checkedWhat Dermstore's own pages say

Who owns it now?THG plc, per Wikipedia, after buying it from Target
Return window60 days from receiving your item
Condition for returnsUnopened, unused, seals intact

Where it shipsUS and Canada only

A few habits make any beauty order safer. Read the ingredient list before you open anything, keep the outer box and the order confirmation until you're sure the product suits you, and photograph the package if it arrives crushed or leaking. Those photos are exactly the kind of evidence Dermstore says it asks for on damaged items.

Fake Dermstore sites and skincare scams

Beauty brands attract copycats because people hunt for deals on expensive serums and devices. Fake shops copy a logo, offer a price far below normal and then ship nothing, or ship fakes.

  • Type the web address yourself instead of tapping an ad or an unexpected message.
  • Be wary of a site that offers worldwide delivery when Dermstore itself says it ships only within the US and to Canada.
  • Avoid paying by bank transfer, crypto or gift card.
  • Never give a verification code to someone claiming to be Dermstore support.

Reviews help, but they can be fake too. My guides on spotting a fake product review and the review sites shoppers rely on explain what to look for. And if you're building a routine from scratch, I'm not giving medical advice here: a dermatologist is the person to ask about your skin.

My verdict on Dermstore

It's a legit, long-running beauty retailer with a named owner and written policies. The catch is simple: you can only return unopened, unused products, and it doesn't ship outside the US and Canada. If you keep that in mind, pay inside the official checkout and keep your order emails, you're in a sensible position.
