Is Claude Code Free? What the Free Plan Leaves Out

No, Claude Code isn't free on its own. Anthropic includes Claude Code in every upgraded Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise), but the Free plan doesn't include it. The other route is a Claude Console account that draws on API credits instead of a plan.

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding tool. It runs in your terminal or inside an editor such as VS Code, and it can read your project, write code and run multi-step tasks for you. Because it uses the same Claude models as the chat app, a lot of people assume the free Claude account covers it. It doesn't, and the way the usage limits are shared catches out plenty of people who do upgrade. Here's how it fits together.

Which Claude plans include Claude Code

Anthropic's plans page puts it plainly: Claude Code is included in all upgraded plans, and it shares the same usage limits as the rest of your plan. The Pro plan is described as everything in Free with more usage, and that list includes Claude Code, projects and access to more Claude models.

PlanClaude Code included?What to know
FreeNoCovers everyday chat questions only
ProYesOne shared pool of usage for chat and Claude Code
Max (5x or 20x)YesFive or twenty times the usage of Pro in each five-hour session
Team and EnterpriseYesSet up by an organisation admin
Claude Console (API)Yes, via API creditsUsage is measured against API rates, not a plan allowance

So the honest answer to the question is that there's no free version of Claude Code itself. What you're choosing is how you want to fund the usage: a Claude plan you may already have for chat, or API credits on a Console account.

The catch: chat and Claude Code share one pool

This is the detail people miss. Anthropic says the limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code, so everything you do in the chat app on web, desktop or mobile and everything you do in the terminal draws from the same allowance. Using Claude Code inside an IDE counts toward those same limits too.

Every plan has limits that reset on a rolling five-hour session window, and upgraded plans add weekly limits on top. Anthropic doesn't publish a fixed message count, because how far you get depends on the length of your conversations, the model you pick and the features you use. Max plans also carry a separate weekly limit for Fable.

In practice that means a long Claude Code session in the morning can leave less room for your writing or research chats in the afternoon. If you use both heavily, plan your day around it or look at Max.

What happens when you hit the limit

If you reach your five-hour session limit while Claude Code is partway through a response, Anthropic says it may keep working briefly to finish the step in progress, and you'll see a message that says the usage limit was reached and it's wrapping up. That allowance is small and capped, and it only applies to a response already running.

After that, the Help Center lists your options:

  • Wait for your usage period to reset.
  • Move from Pro to Max 5x, or from Max 5x to Max 20x, if you hit limits often.
  • Turn on usage credits so you can keep going after a session or weekly limit.
  • Switch to a Claude Console account and use API credits for intensive coding sprints.

One warning from Anthropic is worth repeating: monthly API credits that come with Max plans can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps.

The API key trap that surprises people

Here's the gotcha that sends people to the help pages. If you have an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable set on your computer, Claude Code uses that key instead of your Claude plan. That means your work is measured against API rates rather than the usage included in your plan, even though you're logged in.

If you want to stay inside your plan's allowance, remove that variable, then log out of Claude Code with /logout, restart your terminal and sign in again with the same account you use for Claude. If you were previously on a Console account, run /login inside Claude Code to switch to your plan.

How to start using Claude Code on your plan

  1. Make sure you're on Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise.
  2. Install Claude Code from the Claude Code docs for your operating system.
  3. Run claude in your terminal and log in with your Claude credentials when prompted.
  4. Optional: add the extension for VS Code, Cursor or a JetBrains IDE and log in with the same account.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Is there a way to try it without upgrading?

Not through the Free plan. The closest thing to trying it without committing to a plan is the Console route, where you top up API credits and use Claude Code against those. Anthropic's own docs note that for Pro and Max users the session figure Claude Code shows doesn't matter to them, because usage is included in the plan.

If what you want is free AI help with writing, research or the odd snippet of code, the Free plan of the chat app does that. My page on whether Claude is free covers what that plan gives you.

Pro or Max: which one for Claude Code?

Anthropic describes Max as built for people who work with Claude throughout the day and want longer, uninterrupted sessions. You choose 5x or 20x the usage of Pro in each five-hour session, and Max also has higher output limits. Pro gives you at least five times more usage than Free, according to the plans page.

A simple way to decide: start on Pro, use Claude Code the way you normally would for two weeks, and note how often you see the limit warning. Anthropic shows warning messages as you approach any limit, so you'll know. If you're hitting the five-hour limit most working days, Max is the better fit. If you hit it once in a while, turning on usage credits for those days may suit you better than moving plans.

Teams are different again. If you're a member of a Team or Enterprise organisation, Anthropic has a separate help article, because your admin controls access and limits. Ask them before you upgrade a personal plan you might not need.

My verdict

Claude Code isn't free, but if you already use Claude Pro for your business, you've already got it. Start there, watch how quickly your coding sessions eat into the shared limit, and only move to Max when you're hitting it most days. Check for a stray API key first, because it's a common reason people see usage they didn't expect.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Code included in the free Claude plan?

No. Anthropic includes Claude Code in all upgraded plans, starting with Pro. The Free plan covers everyday chat questions only.

Do Claude Code and the Claude app share usage limits?

Yes. Anthropic says limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code, so activity in both, including Claude Code inside an IDE, counts against the same pool.

Why is Claude Code using API credits instead of my plan?

If an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set on your computer, Claude Code uses that key instead of your plan. Remove it, log out with /logout, restart your terminal and sign in again.

Can I use Max plan API credits in Claude Code?

No. Anthropic says the monthly API credits included with Max plans can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps.

What happens when I hit my Claude Code limit?

You can wait for the reset, move to a higher plan, turn on usage credits, or switch to a Claude Console account and use API credits.
