Yes, BandLab is free. BandLab says you can use it in your web browser and download it free from the Google Play Store and the App Store, and its Pro and Max Memberships add extra tools on top. One exception: since October 19, 2026, Studio in Japan needs an active Membership.
BandLab is a music-making app and social platform. You record, mix and share songs in its Studio, on the web or on your phone, and collaborate with other creators. Membership adds tools, samples and an ad-free experience. There are also a couple of rules about ownership worth knowing before you publish anything. Here's the plain version.
What you can do on BandLab for free
- Use BandLab on the web, ideally in the latest version of Google Chrome, which BandLab recommends.
- Download the free Android and iOS apps, and open your mobile projects on the web and the other way round.
- Make music in Studio and share it with the BandLab community.
- Post comments and send chat messages once you've confirmed your email address.
BandLab notes two practical points. Features on the web can differ from those in the mobile app, and you need an active internet connection to use BandLab.
What BandLab Membership adds
BandLab's Membership FAQ lists these perks for Pro and Max, which is a good guide to what the free version leaves out:
- An ad-free experience.
- Tools such as Voice Cleaner, FX Preset Generator, AutoMix and Voice Changer.
- AutoPitch vocal effects, 24 genre-diverse effects for pitch correction.
- Exclusive effects such as Vocal Verb, Visual EQ, Multi-Band Comp and Shimmer.
- Claims on BandLab Sounds and BandLab Beats for your own sample library.
| Weekly claims | BandLab Pro | BandLab Max |
|---|---|---|
| BandLab Sounds | 100 a week | 500 a week |
| BandLab Beats | 10 a week | Unlimited |
The catch: Studio in Japan
BandLab announced that from October 19, 2026, an active BandLab Membership is required to use BandLab Studio in Japan on web, iOS and Android. That covers opening Studio, creating new projects and editing existing ones.
BandLab says existing projects aren't deleted. They stay saved in your account, and you can still download a Mixdown, an audio file of your project, from its revision page without a Membership. If you're in Japan and don't plan to join, download your mixdowns now so you've got copies of your work.
Who owns the music you make on BandLab?
You do, with one important detail. BandLab says that when you upload or create content, you remain the owner of the copyright. But Forking grants other users a licence to copy, download, modify and play that content, and potentially use it commercially. If you don't want people building on a track, think carefully before you make it forkable.
BandLab Sounds have their own rules. BandLab says users get a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use BandLab Sounds in their own music for personal and commercial purposes, as long as the sounds are part of a larger composition. Redistributing the sounds as standalone samples isn't allowed.
Getting started with BandLab for free
- Sign up on the web or download the BandLab app.
- Confirm your email address, which BandLab says you need to do before you can access your account.
- Open Studio and start a new project.
- Check your forking settings before you publish, so you decide who can build on your work.
- Download a Mixdown of finished tracks, so you always have your own copy.

Cancelling a Membership
If you try Membership, BandLab says it auto-renews unless you cancel before the renewal date, and it recommends cancelling at least 24 hours before the next period. You keep your Membership perks until the end of the current cycle.
Tokens, Credits and Claims explained
BandLab uses three separate allowances, and they're easy to mix up. Tokens power its generative AI tools, such as SongStarter, AI video generation and lyric video generation. Credits are for promoting your music with BandLab Boost. Claims let Members add royalty-free samples and beats from BandLab Sounds and BandLab Beats to a personal collection.
The Claims allowance is a Membership perk, which is why the free version doesn't come with a weekly sample quota. If you mainly need samples, compare the weekly Claims on Pro and Max before you choose.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
My verdict: BandLab is free for making and sharing music on the web and on your phone, everywhere except Studio in Japan since October 19, 2026. Check your forking settings before you publish, download mixdowns of anything that matters, and only look at Membership if you want the extra tools, samples and no ads.
