Is Alignerr Legit? Pay, Screening and Catches (2026)

Alignerr is a real expert network powered by Labelbox, a San Francisco AI data company, where contractors review and train AI models. Its own pages describe weekly payment through Stripe Connect or PayPal. The catch is the screening: you may face an AI interview or assessment, and approval doesn't guarantee a steady supply of work.

If you've been sent an Alignerr invite, or you've seen its homepage promise that experts get paid to train AI, you're probably wondering whether it's a solid opportunity or another time-waster. I read through what Alignerr and the company behind it say about themselves. Here's the plain version, including what the pages leave out.

The company behind the brand

Alignerr's homepage carries the line "Powered by Labelbox". Pulse 2.0, a tech news site, describes Alignerr as Labelbox's network of more than 1 million domain experts who evaluate, train and improve AI models. It also reports that Labelbox is based in San Francisco and bought a start-up called Upcraft, whose AI agents automate expert outreach and qualification.

So there's an identifiable company behind the brand. That's the first box ticked. It's worth knowing, though, that a network of that size means you're one of a very large pool, not a hand-picked few.

What kind of work Alignerr offers

The homepage groups listings under audio, coding, general and STEM. Examples include writing, search quality evaluation and language roles, and the site says it's hiring PhDs, researchers, subject matter experts and experienced professionals across disciplines. In practice, that's reviewing and rating AI answers, writing or correcting content, and checking whether a model got something right.

It suits people who can judge quality in a field they know well. If your background is in a specialist subject, that's the pitch. If it isn't, expect to find fewer listings that fit.

What Alignerr says about pay rates

Alignerr's homepage cites an 80 dollars an hour average. Its example listings are lower and more varied: 25 to 30 dollars an hour for an Italian language expert, 30 to 40 dollars an hour for a writing generalist, and 40 to 120 dollars an hour for search quality and AI training roles.

Read those carefully. An average on a homepage tells you what some people may earn on some projects, not what you'll be offered. The numbers I'd trust are the ones on the specific listing you apply for.

How the Alignerr payment cycle works

Alignerr's Payment FAQs, hosted by Labelbox, say it follows a weekly billing and payment cycle. They also say your country or region decides which payment method you can use, and that you set it up only after you're assigned to a project.

The way you're paid depends on the project, and this is the detail that catches people out:

  • Pay-per-task: each task that completes review gets paid.
  • Pay-per-accepted-task: you're paid only for tasks marked Accepted after quality review. Work that doesn't pass isn't paid.
  • Pay-per-media-hour: pay depends on the duration of media you submit.

The FAQs say the billing mode is fixed before a project goes live, so you can see it in advance. That's one more reason to read each project's details before you start.

How the Alignerr application runs

The process page says some projects need extra steps, such as a Zara AI interview or a domain-specific assessment. After approval you get an email invitation to complete contract signup in the Alignerr app, then you set up payouts with Stripe Connect or PayPal depending on where you live. The page says that last step takes about an hour.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Its FAQ index also covers work authorization, visas and whether there are minimum hours, but I couldn't read the answers, so I'm not going to guess at them. If any of that matters to you, read the live FAQ before you apply.

The catch with Alignerr

  • Access isn't work. Approval gets you into the network. It doesn't promise projects, and the pages I read don't promise minimum hours.
  • Unaccepted work isn't paid. On accepted-task projects, quality review decides your pay.
  • You're a contractor. Alignerr's terms, as summarised in search results, say contractors aren't employees and must sign a consulting agreement before doing any work. That means no employee benefits and your own tax to sort out.
  • Location limits. Your payment method depends on your country, so check yours is supported before you spend time on assessments.

For the tax side, my article on whether side hustles get taxed is a good starting point, and an accountant can fill in the details for your situation.

Spotting fake Alignerr messages

AI training is a hot area, so impersonators follow it. Alignerr's own onboarding goes through its app and a contract signup, with payment details entered through Stripe Connect or PayPal. Be suspicious of anyone who asks you to pay a fee, send gift cards, or share a banking login to get started. Go to the website yourself instead of using a link in a message.

Is Alignerr worth your time

If you have solid expertise, it's a fair thing to apply for, as long as you treat it as flexible side work. If you want to compare it with other ways to work from your laptop, start with my guide to remote jobs that pay well and my breakdown of Prolific's pay rules.
