Instagram Hands-Free: How to Record Stories and Reels Without Holding the Button

Instagram's hands-free mode is in the Stories camera: tap Options on the left, then Hands-Free, and tap the record circle once to start filming without holding it down. Tap and hold instead and Instagram shows a countdown timer before it starts recording.

In Reels, there's no separate Hands-Free button in Instagram's help steps. You get the same result a different way: tap Record once to start a clip and tap it again to stop, rather than holding it. Below are the exact steps for both, plus the other camera options that sit right next to Hands-Free.

Stories vs Reels: how hands-free recording works

How to record hands-free on an Instagram story

  1. Open Instagram and go to your story camera.
  2. Tap Options on the left of the screen.
  3. Tap Hands-Free.
  4. Tap the circle once to start recording. You don't need to keep your finger on it, so you can prop the phone up and step back.

If you need a few seconds to get into position, tap and hold the circle instead. Instagram's help page says you'll see a timer that counts down before recording starts, which is handy when the phone is propped on a shelf and you're across the room.

How to record a reel without holding the button

  1. From your Feed, tap Create at the bottom.
  2. Tap REEL at the bottom, then Camera at the top.
  3. Tap Record once to start recording.
  4. Tap Record again to end the clip.
  5. Repeat for more clips, then tap Next in the bottom right.

Instagram says you can record one or multiple clips that add up to 20 minutes, and the progress bar at the top shows how long you've recorded. If you want effects, audio or layouts while you film, the reels tool menu on the left is where Instagram puts them, including options that change how you record.

Tidy up hands-free clips before you post

If a hands-free take goes wrong, you don't have to start over. Instagram's Reels steps give you the tools to clean it up after recording:

  • Tap Edit video in the bottom left to see a timeline of your clips, text, stickers and music.
  • Tap Reorder in the bottom left, then drag a clip to move it and tap Done.
  • Use the trimmers on each clip to change its length, so a slow start or a walk back to the phone disappears.
  • Tap Add clips if you want to film another take and drop it in.

One length rule to know before you film

Reels can run long, but Instagram's own help page notes that reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences. If you're filming hands-free because you want to talk to camera, plan to keep it under that line. My guide to how long an Instagram reel can be has the full set of limits.

The other camera modes next to Hands-Free

While you're in Options in the Stories camera, these are the other capture modes Instagram lists:

  • Create: make a story without a photo or video, for example by typing something, adding a GIF or asking a question.
  • Boomerang: tap the circle to take a burst of photos that loops forward and backward. There's a full walkthrough in how to do a Boomerang on an Instagram story.
  • Layout: take a series of photos and combine them into a collage, with Change Grid to pick the layout.

Two more tips from the same help page: to zoom while recording, tap and hold with one finger to start and slide that finger up or down, and to switch cameras mid-video, tap and hold to start recording, then tap Reverse camera. Keep tapping Flash until you see Night mode for darker scenes on iPhone, which I cover in turning on night mode for Instagram stories.

If you can't see Hands-Free

  • Check you're in the Stories camera, not Reels. In Reels you tap Record once instead.
  • Look under Options on the left. Hands-Free isn't on the main bar.
  • Update the app. Instagram's tips page gives that advice for a missing music sticker, updating from the App Store or Google Play Store, and it's the sensible first step for any missing camera tool.

My verdict

For a quick talking-to-camera story, Hands-Free with the tap-and-hold countdown is the easiest setup Instagram gives you: prop the phone up, start the timer, step back. For reels, skip hunting for a Hands-Free button and use the single tap on Record, then build the video from short clips you can reorder before you post.
