On Instagram, Gifts need at least 500 followers, the Creator Marketplace needs 1,000 and Subscriptions need 10,000, and every earning tool needs you to be 18 or older (Instagram Help Centre). Subscriptions and Gifts run in 49 countries, including India but not Pakistan, while the Creator Marketplace works wherever Meta advertising operates.

Ask how creators earn on Instagram and you'll get a hundred answers, most of them guesses about rates. The rules themselves aren't guesswork, though. Instagram publishes the follower counts, ages and countries for each earning tool in its help centre, and DataReportal tracks how many people Instagram reaches in India and Pakistan. This page collects those numbers in one table, with each source named, so you can see what's open to you before you plan your content.

The follower counts that open each tool
The Instagram Help Centre sets very different bars for each tool. Gifts need at least 500 followers. The Creator Marketplace, where brands find creators for partnerships, needs a minimum of 1,000 followers on a professional, public account. Subscriptions need a professional account with at least 10,000 followers. Live badges have no follower number in the current help page, just an age rule and a professional account.
So a small account isn't locked out. If you're growing from scratch, my guide to earning on Instagram with a small following covers what's realistic at the Creator Marketplace level, and what an account of a thousand followers can earn in India puts it in an Indian context.
Age rules for earning on Instagram
You can use Instagram from 13 in most countries, according to the Instagram Help Centre, though it's 16 in Australia and 14 in South Korea, Spain, Quebec and Florida. Every earning tool on this page needs you to be older: Subscriptions, Gifts, Live badges and the Creator Marketplace all need you to be 18 or older.
Where the tools are available: India and Pakistan
This is where location matters most. The Instagram Help Centre lists Subscriptions in 49 countries and Gifts in 49 countries. India is on both lists and Pakistan isn't. The Creator Marketplace is wider: it's available worldwide, in all countries where Meta advertising operates.
For creators in Pakistan, that means brand partnerships through the Creator Marketplace are the main built-in route, and most earning happens through deals made directly with brands. I've written about that in what Pakistani creators earn per post and how Instagram pays Pakistani creators for reels.
How many people Instagram reaches
Globally, the Meta Newsroom put Instagram at 3 billion monthly active users in September 2025, and said Reels are reshared over 4.5 billion times every day across Meta platforms. In India, DataReportal's Digital 2026 report counts 481 million users in Instagram's ad audience, 32.8% of the population, up from 414 million in early 2025. In Pakistan the same source counts 22.4 million, 8.7% of the population, up from 18.8 million.
Those audience sizes explain why so many creators in India build on Instagram first. If you're there, see what a ten thousand follower account can earn in India and Instagram earnings per thousand views in India.

The revenue share on badges
Live badges are the one tool where Instagram publishes a share. The Instagram Help Centre says Instagram takes a 0% revenue share on badges, while app stores take 30% in-app fees. Creators can see their supporter list for up to 90 days after a live video ends, which is useful if you want to thank people.
How to read these Instagram numbers
- A threshold gets you access, not earnings. Hitting 10,000 followers opens Subscriptions. It doesn't decide how many people subscribe.
- DataReportal counts ad audiences, not people. The India and Pakistan numbers are the audience Meta says ads can reach, so treat them as an indication rather than an exact head count.
- Country lists change. Instagram adds countries to Subscriptions and Gifts from time to time. Check the help centre for your own country before you plan around a tool.
- Older follower rules still circulate. You'll find guides quoting different thresholds for Gifts and badges. The help centre is the source to trust.
- Per-view rates aren't published. Instagram doesn't publish a rate for views, so estimates like reels earnings by country and what an Instagram calculator can and can't tell you are estimates, not rules.
