You can post up to 20 photos and videos in a single Instagram post, called a carousel. They all have to share one orientation, square, portrait or horizontal, and any videos inside a carousel don't count as reels.
Instagram's help centre puts the carousel limit at 20. Here's how the limit works and the three rules that come with it, which matter more than the number for most people.
The limit and its rules
| Rule | What Instagram says |
|---|---|
| How many items | Up to 20 photos and videos in one post |
| Shape | One orientation for the whole post; you can't mix square, portrait and horizontal |
| Caption and location | One caption and one location for the whole post |
| Tags | You can tag people on each individual photo |
| Video clips | Carousel videos aren't reels and won't appear in the Reels tab |
The shape rule catches people out
Instagram's help centre is clear that the orientation you pick affects every photo and video in the post. If your first photo is portrait and the fifth is horizontal, the horizontal one gets cropped to fit. You can adjust how each one sits in the frame by holding and dragging it, but you can't give it a different shape. If you're mixing shots, decide on one orientation before you start, and crop in your editor first so you control the result.
The video rule matters for reach
This is the detail most guides skip. Instagram says videos in carousels are not considered reels, so they won't show up in the Reels tab or get reels features. If a video is the strongest thing you've got, post it as a reel on its own rather than burying it in slide seven of a carousel.
How to post a carousel, step by step
- Tap Create and choose Post.
- Tap the option to select multiple and choose up to 20 photos and videos.
- Pick one orientation, then drag each item to adjust how it sits in the frame.
- Drag the items into the order you want.
- Apply one filter to everything, or tap individual items to edit them.
- Add your caption and location, then tag people on the photos they're in.
- Tap Share.
After you've posted
You're not stuck with the first version. Instagram lets you reorder the content, remove photos or videos, and edit the caption, location and tagged accounts after sharing. On your profile, people see the first image with a small icon in the corner, and they swipe through the rest. That first image is doing all the work of getting the tap, so put your best one first. If you reorder after posting, the new first slide becomes the cover people see in your grid, which is a handy way to test a different opening image without deleting the post.
Carousels and music
One more limit worth knowing: Instagram's help centre has a separate page on adding music to posts with multiple photos, and music can't be added to carousels that include videos. If the soundtrack matters to you, keep that carousel to photos only.
When 20 is too many
- If the slides tell a story, every one needs a reason to be there. People stop swiping when it drags.
- If you've got two distinct topics, make two posts.
- If you're showing a product, lead with the clearest shot and keep the detail shots for later slides.
My verdict
Twenty is plenty. The limit isn't what holds most carousels back; the mixed shapes and buried videos are. Pick one orientation, keep videos for reels, and lead with your strongest image. If you want slides that stop the scroll, these ideas for engaging backgrounds work for carousel covers too, and you can pin your best carousels to your profile alongside Instagram Highlights.
