The quickest way to wish someone a happy birthday on Snapchat is to send them a Snap with a birthday Lens or sticker, or to message them in a chat. You can also share a birthday Snap with a small group on a private story. If they've turned on Birthday Party, you'll see a cake emoji beside their name on the day.
Birthdays are one of the nicest reasons to open Snapchat, because a quick, personal Snap often lands better than a text. Below are five easy ways to do it, how to tell when it's someone's birthday, ten original captions you can borrow, and a few tips so your message arrives at the right moment.
Five ways to wish someone happy birthday on Snapchat
- A birthday Lens. Open the camera, go to the Lens Explorer, search for birthday, pick a Lens you like, then record or snap and send it.
- A birthday sticker. Take a Snap, tap the sticker icon, search for birthday and drag your favourite onto the picture.
- A Bitmoji sticker. If you use Bitmoji, its stickers include birthday ones that look like you. Open the sticker icon and look in your Bitmoji section.
- A chat message. Open your chat with them and type a short, personal line. It's the simplest option and it works well for people you don't Snap every day.
- A private group story. Post a birthday Snap to a private story that only close friends can see, so everyone can add their wishes in one place.
Mix and match. A Lens Snap plus a one-line chat message feels warmer than either one alone, and it only takes a minute.
How to send a birthday Snap, step by step
- Open Snapchat to the camera.
- Search for birthday in the Lens Explorer, or take a Snap first and tap the sticker icon.
- Pick a Lens or sticker. Add your own text if you like.
- Tap Send To and choose the friend, or choose your private story.
- Send it.
Menu names and icons move around between versions. If something looks different on your phone, open the tools on the right side of the camera or search Snapchat's settings for the word birthday.
How Snapchat shows birthdays
Snapchat doesn't announce everyone's birthday. A cake emoji shows beside a friend's name on their birthday only when they've added their birthday to their account and switched on Birthday Party. That setting lives at Settings, then Birthday, then Birthday Party.
If you can't see a cake next to someone's name, they may have left it off, and that's their choice. Don't go digging for a date. A quick message later in the day, or a message based on a date they've told you, is the friendly way to do it. To learn what the other little icons next to names mean, read my guide to Snapchat emoji meanings.
Ten birthday captions you can use
All of these are original, so you can copy them as they are or tweak them to sound like you.
- Happy birthday! Hope today is full of cake and short on chores.
- Another year older, same terrible jokes. Love you.
- Wishing you a day as good as the ones you give everyone else.
- Cake first, plans later. Happy birthday!
- Cheers to another lap around the sun. Enjoy every minute.
- Today you get to be the main character. Go all in.
- Happy birthday to the friend who always answers my voice notes.
- May your phone battery and your luck both last all day.
- Older, wiser and still late to everything. Happy birthday!
- Thinking of you today. I hope the day treats you well.
Match the message to the person
| Who it's for | Best option | Tone |
|---|---|---|
| Close friend | Lens Snap plus a chat message | Playful, in-jokes welcome |
| Family member | Bitmoji sticker and a warm caption | Warm and affectionate |
| Group of friends | Private group story | Cheerful and shared |
| Colleague you're friendly with | Short chat message | Polite and brief |
| Someone you haven't spoken to in a while | Chat message, no Snap | Friendly, low pressure |
Make the Snap feel personal
A birthday wish lands best when it sounds like it came from you, not from a template. A few small touches make a big difference.
- Use their name or the nickname you use for them.
- Mention one real shared memory, like a trip, a joke or a favourite place.
- Keep it short. One or two lines beat a paragraph on a Snap.
- Add a sticker or a Lens that suits them, such as a food they love or a hobby.
- End with a plan if you have one, like coffee this week.
If you're sending the same wish to several friends, change at least the first line each time. People notice a copied message, and it makes the wish feel less personal.
If you missed the day
It happens to everyone. A late message is still welcome, and a short, honest one works better than an elaborate apology. Something like Sorry I'm late, happy belated birthday, hope it was a good one, is plenty. Send it as a chat message or a Snap, and don't make a big deal of it.

Turn on Birthday Party for your own birthday
If you'd like your friends to see a cake beside your name next time, add your birthday to your account and switch on Birthday Party under Settings, then Birthday. It's a choice, and you can leave it off if you'd rather keep your date private. Only add a birthday you're happy for your Snapchat friends to see.
Timing and privacy tips
- Send it in the morning. Early in their day, in their time zone, makes the message feel thoughtful rather than last-minute.
- Keep it off public places. A personal birthday Snap belongs in a chat or a private story, not somewhere strangers can see.
- Think before you share details. Leave out their age, full name or location unless they're happy for others to see it.
- Ask before posting their photo. If you want to share a picture of them, check first.
- Check where your Snap went. Have a look at your Story to make sure it landed where you meant it to.
If you want to check a Story you've just posted, my guide to checking your active Snapchat Story shows you how. And if you'd like to share a Snap with only a handful of people, how to make a private story on Snapchat walks you through it.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if it's someone's birthday on Snapchat?
If a friend has added their birthday and switched on Birthday Party, a cake emoji appears beside their name on the day. If they haven't, you won't see anything.
Where do I find birthday Lenses?
Open the camera, go to the Lens Explorer and search for the word birthday. Pick one, then record or snap as normal.
Is it better to send a Snap or a message?
Either works. A Snap feels more personal, while a chat message is easy to read later. Many people send both.
Can I wish a whole group happy birthday at once?
Yes. Post a Snap to a private story for the group, or start a group chat and send your message there.
