How to Use ChatGPT Study Mode: Turn It On and Learn Faster

ChatGPT study mode is a learning setting that teaches you step by step instead of handing over the answer. To use it, open ChatGPT, select Study from the tools menu and ask your question, and it replies with guiding questions, hints and quick quizzes. It's open to logged-in users on Free, Plus, Pro and Team plans.

If you've ever asked ChatGPT to explain something and come away with a perfect paragraph you couldn't repeat ten minutes later, study mode is the fix. It turns ChatGPT from an answer machine into a patient tutor that asks you questions back. OpenAI gave it a fresh push in its 15 October Teachers' Day post, so it's worth a closer look whether you're a student, a parent or a business owner learning something new.

What study mode does differently

Normal ChatGPTStudy mode
Gives you the full answerAsks guiding questions and gives hints first
One long replyScaffolded sections that build on each other
Same level for everyoneChecks your level and adjusts, using memory from past chats
No testingQuizzes and open-ended questions with feedback

OpenAI says study mode was built with teachers, scientists and learning experts, around behaviours like active participation, not overloading you, and getting you to reflect on your own thinking.

How to turn on study mode

  1. Open ChatGPT on the web or in the app and log in.
  2. Click or tap the tools menu in the message box.
  3. Choose Study. In OpenAI's original launch post this option was called "Study and learn", so you may see either name.
  4. Type what you want to learn and, ideally, your level and goal.
  5. Answer its questions honestly. That's how it works out what to explain next.
  6. Switch it off from the same menu if you just want a straight answer.

The catch worth knowing

Study mode runs on custom instructions layered on top of ChatGPT, not a separate model. OpenAI is upfront that this means it can behave inconsistently and make mistakes from one conversation to the next. So treat it like a good study partner, not an examiner: check anything important against your course materials or a trusted source.

Prompts that get the most out of study mode

OpenAI's own example is a good template: tell it the topic, ask for one question at a time, and ask it to find your gaps. Here are more in the same style:

I'm studying enzymes. Ask me one question at a time, wait for my answer, and help me identify what I need to review.

I'm revising for a GCSE maths exam on simultaneous equations. Start with an easy question, make each one a bit harder, and stop to explain whenever I get one wrong.

I run a small shop and need to understand VAT basics. Teach me in short steps, check my understanding after each one, and use examples from a retail business.

Quiz me on these notes with five questions, mixing multiple choice and short answers, then tell me which topic I'm weakest on. Notes: [paste].

I keep confusing correlation and causation. Don't explain it yet. Ask me questions until I can explain the difference myself.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Help me learn the basics of Google Analytics for my website. Ask what I already know first, then build from there one idea at a time.

How a study mode session goes

Ask a normal question and you'll notice the change straight away. Instead of a neat explanation, study mode usually starts by asking what you already know, or what you're trying to achieve. Then it explains one small piece, asks you something about it, and builds on your answer. If you get something wrong, it doesn't just correct you; it nudges you towards the right idea with a hint.

Every so often it'll check your understanding with a short quiz or an open question. OpenAI calls these knowledge checks, and they're the bit that makes learning stick. If you'd rather skip ahead, say so. It's a conversation, not a locked course, and you can change the pace whenever you like.

Using study mode outside school

It's built with college students in mind, but I think it's just as useful at work. Training a new team member on your processes? Paste the process and ask study mode to quiz them. Learning a new tool yourself? Ask it to teach you one feature at a time and test you before moving on. It's slower than asking for the answer, and that's exactly why it sticks.

If you're comparing assistants, my explainer on how Claude memory works shows how another AI remembers your level between chats, and these ChatGPT prompts for B2B work are useful once you've learned the basics and want straight answers.

Tools that work with ChatGPT study mode

Named here, not linked:

  • ChatGPT Projects, to keep a subject's notes and chats together.
  • ChatGPT memory, which study mode uses to pitch lessons at your level.
  • OpenAI Academy, OpenAI's free learning platform, including its AI for Educators course.
  • Google Docs or Notion, for keeping your own summaries after each session.
  • Anki or Quizlet, for turning what you've learned into flashcards.

If you'd like help building AI into how your team learns and trains, that's something I work on with businesses.

My verdict

Study mode is one of the most underrated switches in ChatGPT. If you want to understand something, not just tick it off, turn it on, answer honestly and let it slow you down. Just double-check anything that really matters, because OpenAI itself says it can still get things wrong.
