To use ChatGPT on a Mac, download the ChatGPT desktop app from OpenAI's download page, sign in, and press Option + Space from anywhere to open the Chat Bar. The app needs macOS 14 or later on an Apple Silicon or Intel Mac, and OpenAI says it won't make a version for older systems.
You can use ChatGPT in Safari or Chrome on a Mac, and plenty of people do. The desktop app is better for one reason: you can call it up over whatever you're working on with a single shortcut, without hunting for a browser tab. Here's how to install it, the version confusion to avoid, and the shortcuts that make it worth having.
Check your Mac can run it
OpenAI lists two requirements: macOS 14 or later, and either an Apple Silicon chip (M1 or newer) or an Intel processor. It also says plainly that it won't release a version for older operating systems. If your Mac is stuck on an older macOS, use ChatGPT in your browser instead. You'll lose the Chat Bar, but nothing else that matters.
Install the ChatGPT app on your Mac
- Go to OpenAI's ChatGPT download page in your browser.
- Download the installer. OpenAI says the page detects whether you have Apple Silicon or Intel and gives you the right file.
- Open the downloaded file and follow the installer.
- Open the app and sign in with the same method you use on the web.
- Allow any permissions it asks for, such as screen sharing, only if you plan to use those features.
ChatGPT or ChatGPT Classic?
This trips people up. OpenAI has released a new desktop app that combines Chat, Work and Codex, for both macOS and Windows. The older Mac app is still supported but now carries the name ChatGPT Classic. OpenAI recommends the new app for agentic features and Codex. If you only want to chat, either works, but I'd install the new one so you're not left on the older branch.
The Chat Bar: the reason to install it
Press Option + Space anywhere on your Mac and the Chat Bar appears over whatever you're doing. Type a question and press Return. You can also click the plus sign to attach a file or photo, take a screenshot or take a photo, which is perfect for 'what does this error mean?' moments. Drag the Chat Bar wherever you like, or open it from the menu bar icon.
If Option + Space clashes with another app, such as a launcher you already use, OpenAI says you can change the Chat Bar shortcut in the app's settings.
Three ways I'd use the Chat Bar
- Drop in a spreadsheet: OpenAI says you can start a data analysis on a CSV file straight from the Chat Bar, which is handy for a quick look at sales or survey exports.
- Ask about an image: attach a screenshot of a confusing settings screen or a chart and ask what it means.
- Rewrite on the spot: paste a paragraph from an email you're drafting and ask for a shorter, friendlier version, then paste it back.
Each of those takes seconds because you never leave the app you're working in. That's the whole point of having ChatGPT on the desktop rather than in a tab.
Mac shortcuts worth knowing
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| Option + Space | Opens the Chat Bar |
| Command + . | Stops a response mid-stream |
| Command + F | Finds text within a conversation |
| Command + Shift + 1 | Shares your main desktop with ChatGPT |
| Command + Shift + 2 | Shares the active window with ChatGPT |
All of these come from OpenAI's macOS release notes. The screen-sharing pair is the one I'd learn: instead of explaining what's on your screen, you show it.
ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence
On devices that support Apple Intelligence, you can also connect ChatGPT to Siri and Writing Tools from the Apple Intelligence & Siri settings, choosing ChatGPT and then Set Up. You can use it without an account, but OpenAI says your chats only save to your ChatGPT history if you're signed in. That's separate from the desktop app, and you can use both.
Desktop app or browser?
| You want | Use |
|---|---|
| Quick questions over other work | The desktop app and Chat Bar |
| To show ChatGPT your screen | The desktop app |
| ChatGPT on an older Mac | The browser |
| One place for chats on all devices | Either: chats sync with your account |
Keep it safe
Screen sharing and screenshots are powerful, so be deliberate. Close client documents, banking tabs or anything private before you share a window, and remember everything you send becomes part of the chat. My guide to whether ChatGPT is private explains the data controls that decide what's kept.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Make it part of your day
The Mac app earns its place when it becomes a reflex: Option + Space, ask, carry on. Set up custom instructions once so every answer arrives in the style you want, and you'll find yourself using the Chat Bar far more than the main window.
My verdict
If your Mac runs macOS 14 or later, install the new ChatGPT desktop app from OpenAI's download page, not a lookalike, and learn Option + Space. If your Mac is older, stick with the browser; OpenAI isn't planning a version for you.
