How to Use Adobe Express: Templates, Quick Actions and AI

To use Adobe Express, sign up free at adobe.com/express on a desktop browser or install the mobile app. From the Home page, start from a template, use a Quick Action for a single job such as removing a background, or generate an image or template with AI. Then edit, download or schedule your design.

Adobe Express is Adobe's all-in-one app for social posts, flyers, short videos, logos and PDFs. Adobe's own getting started course covers three things first: the Home page, Quick Actions and templates. Those are the three ways in, so this guide follows the same order, then covers the AI tools and what the free plan includes.

Step 1: Sign up and find your way around Home

Adobe says the free plan needs no credit card and works on desktop browsers and mobile phones. Once you're in, the Home page is your starting point. From there you can search for the kind of thing you want to make, such as an Instagram post, a flyer or a YouTube thumbnail, open recent projects and jump into Quick Actions.

Step 2: Start from a template

Templates are the fastest route to something that looks designed. The free plan includes 100,000+ static and video templates, 4,000+ Adobe Fonts and 1M+ royalty-free Adobe Stock photos, videos, music tracks and design elements, according to Adobe's pricing page as of October 2026.

  1. Search for the format you need, such as Instagram story or event flyer.
  2. Pick a template and open it in the editor.
  3. Replace the text, photos and colours with your own.
  4. Download it. Adobe lists JPEG, PNG, PDF, GIF and PPT among the export formats.

If you can't find a template that fits, use Generate Template and describe what you want instead. More on that below.

Step 3: Use Quick Actions for one-off jobs

Quick Actions do one task in a few clicks, without opening a full design. They're grouped by what you're working on:

Working onQuick Actions include
PhotosRemove Background, Resize Image, Crop Image, convert to JPG, PNG or SVG
VideoCaption video, change speed, trim, crop, merge, resize, convert to GIF or MP4
PDFsEdit PDF, combine PDFs, organise pages, convert to and from PDF
OtherGenerate QR Code, Logo Maker, Collage Maker, Animate from Audio

Most image and video Quick Actions are on the free plan. PDF ones are limited: Adobe lists free accounts with free PDF import and 10 PDF Quick Actions a month, while Premium has unlimited.

Step 4: Try the generative AI tools

Adobe Express has a set of AI tools: Generate Image, Generate Template, Generate Text Effect, Insert Objects and Remove Objects. On the free plan, Adobe says you get free daily generations for images, text effects, templates and inserting or removing objects, plus a few one-off allowances:

Generate images, text effects and templatesFree daily generations
Insert and Remove ObjectsFree daily generations
Generate Presentations from a document5 free lifetime uses
Generate 5-second videos2 free lifetime uses

Premium includes 250 generative credits a month per user. Those lifetime limits are worth knowing, so save your five presentation generations for real documents rather than tests.

Step 5: Schedule your posts

Express includes a Content Scheduler, so you can plan and publish straight to your social channels without another tool. On the free plan Adobe allows one account per social network and one shared calendar. Premium raises that to three accounts per network and three shared calendars.

More tools worth knowing

Adobe's plan comparison lists a few features that save small businesses real time. Resize lets you turn one design into several formats in the same file, so your Instagram post becomes a story and a Facebook post in one go. Translate converts text into 45+ languages. Caption Writer suggests social captions based on your design, and Safe Zones show you where text and logos might get cut off on each platform. Check which plan you need for each before you build a routine around it.

Tips that make it quicker

  • Set up your colours and fonts once and reuse the same few templates, so everything you post looks like it's from the same brand.
  • Use Remove Background on product photos before you drop them into a template. It's one of the most useful free Quick Actions.
  • Don't spend your lifetime AI allowances while you're learning. Practise on templates first.
  • Keep video projects short. Even though the free plan allows videos up to 30 minutes, social clips work best kept tight.

My verdict

For a small business, the free plan covers most everyday design: templates, background removal, resizing, captions and basic scheduling. Learn the Quick Actions first, because they save the most time, and treat the lifetime AI allowances as something to save for real work.
