To turn off WhatsApp auto download, open Settings, tap Storage and data, then under Media auto-download untick the media types on Android, or choose Never on iPhone. The detail people miss: saving media to your gallery is a separate setting, so check both.
If your phone fills up with photos from group chats you never wanted, or a big video lands on your mobile data before you've even seen it, auto-download is the setting behind it. I get asked about this a lot by small business owners who sit in busy customer groups and by friends whose galleries have become a dumping ground. WhatsApp's help pages explain exactly where the switches are, and there are really two separate things to know about: what downloads automatically, and what gets copied into your gallery.
Turning off WhatsApp auto download on Android
According to WhatsApp's help centre, you set auto-download separately for mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming. Here's the route:
- Open WhatsApp and tap the three dots at the top right.
- Tap Settings, then Storage and data.
- In the Media auto-download section, tap When using mobile data.
- Untick every type of media you don't want downloaded (photos, audio, video, documents), then tap OK.
- Repeat for When connected on Wi-Fi and When roaming.
Do all three if you want nothing to download by itself. Many people only change the mobile data one and are surprised when their Wi-Fi keeps filling the phone. Menus vary by app version, so if the wording differs a little, start from Storage and data.
Switching off WhatsApp auto download on iPhone
- Open WhatsApp and tap Settings, or tap your profile picture.
- Tap Storage and data.
- In the Media auto-download section, tap a media type, such as Photos or Videos.
- Choose Never, Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi and cellular.
- Repeat for each type of media.
Never is the one that turns it off. Wi-Fi keeps downloads to your home or office connection, and Wi-Fi and cellular downloads whenever you're online. WhatsApp's help pages add one detail about videos: even with the setting on Never, once you tap play the video plays and carries on downloading in the background.
Stopping automatic downloads on WhatsApp Web and desktop
The desktop and web versions have a shorter route. WhatsApp's help pages say to click Settings or your profile picture, click Chats, then click Media auto-download and pick what should download. They also note that the folder where files land is decided by your computer's settings, not by WhatsApp.
What each WhatsApp auto download option does
| Setting | What WhatsApp's help pages say it does |
|---|---|
| Never (iPhone) | Media doesn't download by itself; you tap each file to fetch it |
| Wi-Fi (iPhone) | Downloads only on a Wi-Fi connection such as home internet |
| Wi-Fi and cellular (iPhone) | Downloads whenever you have a connection |
| When using mobile data (Android) | Ticked media types download on cellular data |
| When connected on Wi-Fi (Android) | Ticked media types download on Wi-Fi |
| When roaming (Android) | Ticked media types download while you're roaming |
Auto-download and saving to your gallery are different settings
This is the bit people trip over. Turning off auto-download stops files fetching themselves, but a separate setting controls whether media is copied into your phone's gallery or camera roll. On Android that's Media visibility under Settings, then Chats. On iPhone it's Save to Photos, in the same place. WhatsApp's help pages say both are on by default, and that changing them doesn't undo any choices you've already made for particular chats or groups.
If your real complaint is the gallery clutter, my guide to stopping WhatsApp saving photos to your gallery goes through that side in more detail. You can use both settings together: auto-download off so nothing lands uninvited, and gallery saving off so the few things you do open stay inside WhatsApp.
Switching off media saving for one WhatsApp chat or group
You don't have to treat every chat the same. Per WhatsApp's help centre, you can open a chat, tap the contact or group name and change the saving option just for that conversation. On Android that's Media visibility, then No, then OK. On iPhone it's Save to Photos, then Never.
That's handy if you have one family group sending constant holiday clips but you want customer photos saved. Keep the busy groups on the strict setting and leave the ones you rely on alone.

Downloading a WhatsApp photo or video by hand
Once auto-download is off, you'll see a placeholder instead of the file. On Android, WhatsApp's help pages say to tap the photo or video and then tap the download icon. On iPhone, tap and hold the photo or video, then tap Save. One more point from the help centre: YouTube videos shared in a chat can't auto-download at all, so that setting never affects them.
WhatsApp auto download for people who run a business chat
If you use WhatsApp to talk to customers, auto-download can bring in documents, screenshots and voice notes you'd rather open on purpose. Setting everything to manual gives you a moment to check what a file is before it sits on your phone. It also keeps a work phone tidy when you're in several groups. Only you can judge the trade-off: manual means an extra tap each time, which can slow down a busy day. If you'd like more settings walked through in one place, I've gathered them in my collection of WhatsApp help guides.
If WhatsApp auto download still seems to be on
- Check every row, not just one. On Android there are three (mobile data, Wi-Fi, roaming) and each media type is ticked separately.
- On iPhone, each media type has its own choice, so Photos might say Never while Videos still says Wi-Fi.
- Look at the per-chat saving option. A chat set to save everything can still copy files into your gallery.
- Update WhatsApp, because older versions word the menus differently.
Using less mobile data with WhatsApp auto download off
WhatsApp's help centre suggests that if your mobile data allowance is limited, you should restrict media to Wi-Fi only. On iPhone that's the Wi-Fi option. On Android it means ticking nothing under mobile data and roaming while leaving Wi-Fi as you like. For anyone who travels, the roaming row matters most. The help pages warn that leaving it on can lead to a lot more data use than you expect.
Frequently asked questions
How do I turn off auto download on WhatsApp?
Go to Settings, then Storage and data, and under Media auto-download untick the media types on Android, or choose Never on iPhone. Repeat for each connection type or media type.
Will WhatsApp still show my photos if auto-download is off?
Yes. You'll see the chat message and can tap the file to download it when you want it.
Does turning off auto-download stop photos saving to my gallery?
Not by itself. Gallery saving is a separate setting: Media visibility on Android, Save to Photos on iPhone.
Can I turn it off for just one chat?
You can change the media saving option for a single chat or group by opening it and tapping the contact or group name.
Will YouTube videos in a chat auto-download?
No. WhatsApp's help pages say YouTube videos are unable to auto-download.
