How to Turn Off Snapchat Notifications: All, Group or Friend

To turn off Snapchat notifications, tap your profile icon, tap the gear to open Settings, and switch off each notification type. To quiet just one chat, press and hold the group or friend, then tap Chat and Notification Settings.

What do you want quiet?

What you want quietWhere to go (per Snapchat's help)
Everything, on iPhoneProfile icon, gear, then the toggle for each notification type
Everything, on AndroidGear in the Profile screen, then uncheck the ones you want off
One groupPress and hold the group, Chat and Notification Settings, Mute Chats
One friendPress and hold their name, Chat and Notification Settings, Notification Settings, Mute Chats and/or Mute Calls
Stories from a friend (iPhone)Settings, Manage Story Notifications
Your Apple WatchThe Watch app on your iPhone

Find your row and go straight to it. Going to the big switch when you only want one noisy group quiet is overkill, and it's easy to end up missing the Snaps you wanted. All of this comes from Snapchat's help pages, checked as of Nov 2026.

Silencing the whole app, by device

Snapchat Support on iPhone notifications gives the route: tap your profile icon, tap the gear to open Settings, then tap the toggle for each notification type you want off. Tap it again to turn it back on, so there's no harm in experimenting.

On Android the wording's a little different. Tap the gear in the Profile screen to open Settings and uncheck the notifications you don't want. Depending on your device, you may need to enable notifications in your device settings first, which sounds backwards but is what Snapchat says.

Snapchat's page doesn't name each toggle, so go through what's on your screen and switch off what you don't want.

Muting one group without leaving it

Snapchat explains group chat notifications this way: swipe right from the Camera to Chat, press and hold the group, tap Chat and Notification Settings, then toggle on Mute Chats.

There's a gentler option, and it's the one I'd try first in a busy group. Instead of muting completely, choose Chat Notifications, then Chats and Snaps or Mentions Only. The page also describes Message Notifications options: All Messages, Mentions Only and Silent. Mentions Only is the sensible middle ground, as you'll still hear about it when someone's talking to you by name, and you won't hear the other chatter.

Quieting one person

For one friend, Snapchat Support on message and call notifications says to press and hold their name, tap Chat and Notification Settings, tap Notification Settings, then toggle Mute Chats, Mute Calls or both.

Those are two separate switches, so you can stop the messages buzzing and still let calls through, or the reverse. If you're wondering what the other side gets told about you in a different situation, that's a separate question, and I've answered it in whether Snapchat tells people about a chat screenshot.

Stories, and the Apple Watch

On iPhone, Story notifications have their own list. Go to Settings, then Manage Story Notifications, tap the name of each Snapchatter and tap Done. You need Snapchat notifications enabled in your device settings for this to work, so don't switch them off at device level and then wonder why this list isn't doing anything.

If it's your wrist that keeps buzzing, that's managed from the Watch app on your iPhone. You can set Tap to Show Full Notification, or turn off Mirror iPhone Alerts from the Snapchat app. I've got more on Snapchat alerts on your wrist if that's the one bothering you.

And if the alerts themselves are fine and it's only the noise you can't stand, you may not need any of this. Changing the sound Snapchat makes is a separate fix, which I've covered on its own page.

The logged-out reminders catch

Here's the one that confuses people. Snapchat says you can still get some push notifications after logging out, if your account stays on the login screen for one-tap login and your device allows notifications. So logging out doesn't necessarily mean silence, and it's why you might get pinged by an app you thought you'd left.

According to Snapchat, those reminders stop in any of four ways:

  • You log back in.
  • You remove the account from the login screen.
  • You turn them off in your device settings.
  • Automatically, after about 28 days.

My pick is removing the account from the login screen, if you're done with the app on that device. It deals with the cause. Turning them off in device settings works too, and it's the quickest. Waiting around for 28 days is fine only if the reminders don't bother you.

The bell icon isn't a push alert

One last thing to clear up. Notification Center, the bell icon on the Stories, Camera or Chat tabs, is an in-app list. It's separate from push alerts, so seeing items in there doesn't mean your phone's been buzzing, and switching push alerts off isn't the same as clearing that list. Swipe left to delete one. Items older than 31 days get removed automatically.

What Snapchat's pages don't cover

Snapchat's notification pages don't give separate Android steps for Stories, so the Stories row in the table is iPhone only. Notification permissions for Snapchat for Web sit in a separate article.

Quick answers

How do I turn off all Snapchat notifications?

On iPhone, tap your profile icon, tap the gear and switch off each notification type. On Android, tap the gear in the Profile screen and uncheck the ones you want off.

Why am I getting Snapchat notifications when I'm logged out?

Snapchat says it can happen if your account stays on the login screen for one-tap login and your device allows notifications. They stop if you log back in, remove the account from the login screen or turn them off in device settings, or automatically after about 28 days.

Can I mute one friend on Snapchat without blocking them?

Yes. Press and hold their name, tap Chat and Notification Settings, tap Notification Settings, then toggle Mute Chats, Mute Calls or both.

Is the Snapchat bell icon the same as push notifications?

No. Snapchat describes Notification Center as an in-app list, separate from push alerts. Items older than 31 days are removed automatically.
