How to See Tagged Photos on Facebook (Computer and Android)

To see tagged photos on Facebook, open your activity log from Settings and privacy, click Your Facebook activity, then Activity that you're tagged in. On Android, tap Manage your tags. One catch: removing your tag doesn't delete the photo, it stays visible to the audience the poster chose.

Every so often a friend, a client or a customer tags you in a photo, and you'd like to find it again. Maybe you want to check what's out there with your name on it, or you're tidying up before a launch. Facebook's help pages point to one place for all of this, your activity log, and once you know where it sits it takes under a minute.

Below are the steps from Facebook's help centre for a computer and for the Android app, what tagged photos can show and to whom, and what to do if one isn't where you'd expect.

Seeing tagged photos on Facebook from a computer

According to Facebook's help centre, you can manage what you've been tagged in, such as posts, photos and videos, all in one place from your activity log. Here are the steps:

  1. Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook.
  2. Select Settings and privacy, then click Activity log.
  3. In the left menu, click Your Facebook activity.
  4. Click Activity that you're tagged in.

That list is everything you've been tagged in. From there you can open an item, or use Options next to it if you'd like to remove your tag. Only you can see your activity log, though the posts and photos inside it may appear in other places on Facebook, such as on your timeline, in search or in friends' Feeds.

Seeing tagged photos on Facebook with the Android app

  1. Tap Menu in the top left of Facebook, then tap your name.
  2. Tap Options below your profile picture, then tap Activity log.
  3. Tap Your Facebook activity.
  4. Below Activity you're tagged in, tap Manage your tags.

Here's the helpful bit. Facebook's help pages say you can tap Filters at the top, then choose Categories or Date. Under Categories you can pick All, Posts and comments that you're tagged in, or Photos that you're tagged in. That last one is the quickest way to see only tagged photos and skip everything else. Under Date you can choose the range you'd like to review.

I've only listed the Android steps because those are the ones the help centre spells out for me. On an iPhone, menus vary by app version, so if the wording on your phone is slightly different, start from your profile and look for Activity log.

Who can see a photo you're tagged in on Facebook

This is the part people get wrong. Facebook's help pages say your photos and the photos you're tagged in are visible to the audience they're shared with, the people tagged in the photo, and friends that the people tagged choose to add to the audience. In other words, the person who posted the photo picks the audience, and your tag doesn't change that.

When tagged photos on Facebook don't show on your profile

You may notice that a photo you were tagged in isn't on your own profile. There are two settings behind this, and both live in your Profile and tagging settings. On a computer, click your profile picture, choose Settings and privacy, then Settings, and click Profile and tagging in the left column.

  • Who can see posts you're tagged in on your profile? lets you choose the audience, such as Friends, for tagged posts once they've appeared on your profile.
  • Review posts that you're tagged in before the post appears on your profile? lets you approve tagged content first.

Facebook's help pages add a reminder: photos and posts you hide from your profile are still visible to the audience they're shared with in other places on Facebook, such as in Feed and search. Hiding is not the same as removing. If you've hidden something and want to look at it again, the activity log is where you review posts you've hidden from your timeline. I've written a separate walkthrough on finding archived Facebook posts if what you're after is your own content rather than tags.

Removing your tag from a tagged photo on Facebook

Seeing a tagged photo is one thing, and you might decide you'd rather not be in it. Facebook gives you a few options:

  • Remove the tag. From the activity log, use Options next to the item and choose Remove tag, then confirm with Remove. You can also remove a tag straight from your Feed or timeline.
  • Ask the person who posted it to take it down. That's the only way the photo itself disappears.
  • Report it if it goes against Facebook's Community Standards.

Please bear this in mind: removing your tag doesn't delete the photo. According to Facebook's help centre, the post or photo is still shared with the audience selected by the person who made the post, and those people may see it in Feed, search and other places. If a friend shared it with their friends, it stays visible to them.

If you've got lots of tags to clear, Facebook says you can remove several at once from the Manage activity section of your activity log, but right now that's only available in the iPhone, Android or Facebook Lite apps.

Tagged photos on Facebook for creators and small business owners

If you run a business or build a brand, tagged photos are useful exposure and occasionally a headache. Customers tag you at events, colleagues tag you in team shots and not every angle is flattering. Checking your tagged photos regularly lets you spot the good ones, thank the people who posted them, and deal with anything you'd rather not have next to your name.

Turning on the review setting is worth considering if your profile doubles as your professional shop window. It means nothing tagged appears on your profile until you've looked at it. Just remember what Facebook's help pages say: the review setting only controls what shows on your profile, and the photo may still be visible elsewhere.

If you can't find a tagged photo on Facebook

  • Check the filter. In the Android app, make sure Categories is set to All or Photos that you're tagged in, and that your date range is wide enough.
  • Look for it in the right place. Tagged photos sit under Activity that you're tagged in, not under Your posts.
  • Check whether it was removed. The person who posted it may have taken it down, or you might have removed your own tag earlier.
  • Update the app. Menus change between versions, and older versions can look different from the steps above.
  • Try a computer. Some screens, such as the left menu on Your Facebook activity, are easier to find on a larger display.

If a tagged photo shows something that breaks Facebook's rules, use the report option rather than just removing the tag, and if you're ever worried about your safety, contact the police.

What the Facebook activity log can also show you

Since you're already in there, it's worth a look around. Facebook's help pages say the activity log includes categories such as your posts, activity you're tagged in, interactions like likes, reactions and comments, and logged actions such as videos you've watched. If that last one interests you, my answer on whether Facebook has a watch history covers it. Only you can see the log, so it's a safe place to browse.
