To remove a filter on TikTok, tap Filters on the side panel of the camera or editing screen, then tap Remove on the left. Effects come off by tapping Remove next to the effect at the bottom. The beauty Retouch setting is different: you have to switch it off before you record.
That last point catches lots of people out. They film a video, notice their skin looks airbrushed, and go hunting for a remove button that isn't there. Retouch is a camera setting, so it's baked in once you've recorded.
Filters, effects and Retouch are three different things
| Type | Where it lives | How to remove it |
|---|---|---|
| Filter (colour and tone) | Filters on the side panel | Tap Filters, then Remove |
| Effect on a video | Effects at the bottom | Tap Remove next to the effect |
| Effect on a photo | Effects on the side panel | Tap the effect, Remove, then Save |
| Retouch (smoothing) | Retouch on the side panel | Turn it off before you record |
TikTok's Help Center describes each of these separately, and knowing which one you've used tells you where to look.
How to remove a filter before you post
- On the camera or editing screen, tap Filters on the side panel.
- Tap Remove on the left of the filter strip.
- Check the preview. If you'd rather keep a lighter version, use the slider above the filters to turn the strength down instead of removing it.
How to remove an effect
For a video, tap the Remove button next to the effect at the bottom of the screen. For a photo, tap Effects on the side panel, tap the effect you picked, tap Remove and then Save at the top. If you skip Save on a photo, the effect can come back when you move to the next screen.
How to turn off Retouch
Before you press record, look for Retouch on the side panel and switch it off or set it to zero. TikTok's own instructions put this step before recording or taking a photo, which is the clue that you can't undo it on footage you've already shot.
Can you remove a filter after posting?
Not from the posted video. Once a TikTok is published, the filter is part of the video file. Your options are:
- Save the original from your phone's camera roll, if you filmed it there, and post it again without the filter.
- Download your own video to your device, delete the post and re-edit it, accepting that the new post starts with fresh views and comments.
- Leave it. A filter rarely hurts a video as much as you think it does.
You can't remove a filter from someone else's video. If a creator used a beauty filter, what you're watching is what they posted.
Stop filters coming back
If the same filter keeps appearing, TikTok may be remembering your last choice. Open Filters and tap Remove before you record, then check Retouch is off. In the filters panel there's also a Management option where you can choose which filters show up at all, which is handy if you keep tapping one by accident.
When the Remove button doesn't work
- Update the TikTok app. Old versions sometimes show an editing screen that doesn't match the help steps.
- Clear the app's cache, which we cover in how to clear your TikTok cache.
- Restart your phone, then try again on a new recording.
- If it still won't budge, send TikTok a screen recording of the editing screen through Need more help in the app's support pages. TikTok asks for exactly that.
Some effects don't load on older phones at all, which is a related problem. Our guide on why TikTok effects won't work on your device goes through the fixes.
Using filters well instead of removing them
Sometimes the problem isn't the filter, it's the strength. TikTok gives you a strength slider above the filter strip, so you can keep a colour tweak without the heavy look. A few habits that help:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Film in good natural light first. Filters can't fix a dark room and often make it look worse.
- Use one filter per video, not a stack of filters and effects together.
- Keep product videos filter-free so colours match what customers receive.
- Save your favourite effects with the Favourites button so you aren't scrolling through hundreds each time.
Filters and honesty
If you sell skincare, make-up, clothes or anything where colour matters, think carefully about filters. A video that looks smoother or brighter than real life can disappoint buyers and lead to returns. Many brands now say 'no filter' in the caption for exactly this reason. For before-and-after videos, using the same light and no filter on both halves is the fair way to show results.
Removing a filter from photos and slideshows
Photo posts work slightly differently from video. Filters still come off through Filters on the side panel and Remove. Effects on a photo need one extra step: tap Effects, tap the effect you chose, tap Remove, then tap Save at the top. In a slideshow with several photos, check each one before posting, because a filter you applied to one image doesn't always carry across the others the way you expect.
If you edit photos in another app first, such as your phone's own editor, any filter you add there is already part of the picture. TikTok can't remove it, so keep an unfiltered copy in your camera roll if you might want both versions.
My advice
If you want natural-looking videos, check two things before every recording: Filters set to none and Retouch switched off. It takes three seconds, and it saves you finding out after you've posted. If you like a filtered look, use the strength slider rather than the full filter. Lighter usually looks better on camera.
